US War Party Scuttles Korean Peace Prospects

  • PressTV Published on May 24, 2018
Both US political parties and their representatives from the military–industrial complex have scuttled efforts to establish peace on the Korean peninsula because they want to keep the embers of conflict alive in order to maintain American imperialism’s position in East Asia, says Dennis Etler, an American political analyst who has a decades-long interest in international affairs.

    by https://sputniknews.com/
Emmanuel Macron has come to Russia for the first time since being elected president in 2017, bringing a squad of French top officials and entrepreneurs, to attend the Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) and meet Vladimir Putin. The conflicts in Syria and Ukraine, the Iran deal and Paris-Moscow relations are on the agenda.

French President Emmanuel Macron has arrived in Russia on May 24 for a two-day visit, which is his first one since the 2017 French presidential elections. Macron, accompanied by his wife Brigitte, has taken his Culture Minister Francoise Nyssen, Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian and other top officials from the Russian-French Trianon Dialogue organization and friendship parliamentary groups, as well as French businesspeople.

The French president has been welcomed in the Konstantin Palace, a former residence of Peter the Great set some 20 kilometers (12 miles) outside Saint Petersburg.

During his stay in Russia, he is to attend a number of events within the framework of the SPIEF and hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. After a tête-à-tête meeting they will have broader negotiations. According to the Kremlin, the two presidents plan to discuss developing bilateral cooperation as well as international and regional topics, including possible ways to settle the crises in Syria and Ukraine and the situation around the 2015 JCPOA, known as the Iran deal, from which the US recently pulled out of.

Besides, around 20 treaties, contracts and memorandums have been prepared for the visit, which are to be signed by Putin and Macron during the SPIEF.

US-Led Coalition Hits Syrian Army Base – Reports

  • US-Led Coalition Hits Syrian Army Base – Reports
    by https://sputniknews.com/
According to the SANA News Agency, US-led Coalition Air Forces struck several positions of the Syrian army in the eastern Syrian desert.

According to Reuters and AFP, the strikes allegedly took place near an energy installation located near the Iraqi border, about 100 km (60 miles) west of the Euphrates river where the US-led Coalition is fighting against Daesh militants.

“Some of our military positions between Abu Kamal and Hmeima were hit this morning in an aggression by American coalition warplanes,” a Syrian military source was quoted as saying by AFP citing state news agency SANA.

The attack was first reported by the press office of Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant movement, an ally of the Syrian government. It said warplanes had targeted army positions near the T2 oil facility in the eastern Syrian province of Deir ez-Zor.

On Sunday, the US Special Operations Joint Task Force — Operation Inherent Resolve (SOJTF-OIR) commanding general, Maj. Gen. Jamie Jarrard told Sputnik the US-led coalition has detected the footholds of the Daesh terrorists near the Syrian towns of Abu Kamal and Hajin.

“Many of the remaining Daesh fighters are holed up in an area north of the town of Abu Kamal along the Iraqi-Syria border and in the town of Hajin along the eastern side of the Euphrates River,” Jarrard said.

Meanwhile, the US-led coalition launched nearly 80 percent more airstrikes in Syria during the first half of May compared to the previous month, Central Command said in a press release last week. The US-led coalition has been increasing airstrikes in Syria despite lacking authorization from either President Bashar Assad’s government or the UN Security Council.

Iran Tells Europe to Step Up and Save Nuclear Deal

  • Iran Tells Europe to Step Up and Save Nuclear Deal
    by https://www.reuters.com/
BEIRUT/BERLIN (Reuters) – Iran poured scorn on threatened U.S. sanctions on Tuesday and told European powers to step up and salvage its international nuclear deal – though Germany signaled there was only so much it could do to fend off Washington’s economic clout.

Senior Iranian military and political figures queued up to issue defiant statements a day after Washington threatened “the strongest sanctions in history” if Iran failed to make a series of sweeping changes.

Two weeks on from U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to pull out of the nuclear pact, his administration told Iran to drop its nuclear program and pull out of the Syrian civil war among other demands, setting Washington and Tehran further on a course of confrontation.

“The people of Iran should stand united in the face of this and they will deliver a strong punch to the mouth of the American Secretary of State and anyone who backs them,” Ismail Kowsari, a senior commander with Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said, according to the Iranian Labour News Agency.

The New US Strategy on Iran is Designed to be Rejected – Here’s Why

War mongers and liars!

  • The New US Strategy on Iran is Designed to be Rejected – Here’s Why
    by Kim Sengupta, https://www.independent.co.uk/
In his speech, Mike Pompeo declared that Iran must withdraw all its forces from Syria, stop supporting its allies in Yemen, halt production of long-range missiles, stop uranium enrichment and agree to inspection of a range of facilities at anytime, anywhere in the country.

The Trump administration announced its policy towards Iran on Monday after reneging on the country’s nuclear deal with the international community. There are a dozen demands, amounting, in effect, to a declaration of economic warfare, a demand for Tehran to surrender its defence and foreign policy and the threat to force regime change.

The conditions put forward by the new secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, have no chance of being accepted by Iran. They have pleased Saudi Arabia, which has pledged to buy billions of dollars of weaponry from the US, and Israel, whose backers funded Donald Trump’s election campaign. They have been met with dismay by America’s Western allies who see just how far the transatlantic divide has grown under Trump.

In his first speech as secretary of state, Pompeo declared that Iran must withdraw all its forces from Syria, stop supporting its allies Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis in Yemen. It must halt production of long-range missiles, stop uranium enrichment allowed under the nuclear agreement, and agree to inspection of a range of facilities at any time, anywhere in the country.

These are the “very basic requirements” said Pompeo, implying other demands will follow. Failure by Tehran to comply, he threatened, will result in “the strongest sanctions in history” which wound “crush” Iran’s government if it does not change its ways. Iran’s people, he said, need to get rid of their leaders.

US-Led Strike Hits Government Targets in Syria – State Media

  • US-Led Strike Hits Government Targets in Syria – State Media
    by https://www.rt.com/
US-led coalition warplanes have bombed several Syrian army positions in the eastern Syrian province of Deir ez-Zor, state media outlet SANA reports, citing a military source.

The attack took place shortly after midnight on Thursday. SANA reported that the US-led coalition aircraft inflicted limited material damage and no casualties. The airstrikes, which hit near the city of Al-Bukamal, were reportedly coordinated with anti-government militants.

Earlier, Lebanon’s Hezbollah group, an ally of the Syrian forces in the fight with Islamic State (IS, former ISIS/ISIL) said the coalition jets targeted two Syrian army outposts, including an energy installation near the Iraqi border.

The area has seen rapid advances by the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) pushing against IS militants near Al-Bukamal and moving towards the eastern bank of the Euphrates River.

Last week, the SDF announced they took control over a former IS base on the Euphrates River near the Syrian-Iraqi border, moving closer to territory controlled by the Syrian government.

Syria has recently been subjected to massive bombardment campaigns by another US ally, Israel, which in early May sent 28 fighter jets that fired some 60 air-to-surface missiles into Syrian territory against what Tel-Aviv claimed were targets belonging to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. Israel said that its largest attack in years was a response to Iran’s launching an attack on the Israeli-controlled part of the occupied Golan Heights from Syria. The Syrian air defenses retaliated, allegedly firing some 100 missiles at Israeli warplanes.

Iran Announces Plan To Stay In Syria As Pompeo Issues Unprecedented Threats

  • Iran Announces Plan To Stay In Syria As Pompeo Issues Unprecedented Threats
    by Tyler Durden, https://www.zerohedge.com/
After last Thursday’s relatively brief meeting in Sochi between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Syria’s Bashar al-Assad wherein Putin stressed that it is necessary for all “foreign forces” to withdraw from Syria, there’s been much speculation over what Putin actually meant.

Many were quick to point out that Assad had agreed that “illegal foreign forces” should exit Syria — meaning those uninvited occupying forces in the north and northeast, namely, US troops, Turkish troops and their proxies, and all foreign jihadists — while most mainstream Western outlets, CNN and the Washington Post among them, hailed Putin’s request to see Iran withdraw from Syria.

Whatever non-Syrian entity Putin intended to include by his words, both Syria and Iran gave their unambiguous response on Monday: Iran announced it would stay in Syria at the request of the Assad government.

  • Netanyahu Moves Security Cabinet Meetings to Bunker Near Jerusalem
    by , https://www.haaretz.com/
The decision was made after details of a security cabinet meeting before the reveal of Iranian nuclear documents was made public

Security cabinet meetings were moved to a bunker in the Institute for National Security Studies in Jerusalem two weeks ago, Israel’s channel 10 news reported.

The decision was made by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who recently expressed his frustration with information leaks from the cabinet meeting, particularly prior to his reveal of a cache of information, stolen by the Mossad, on Iran’s nuclear program.

A few hours before Netanyahu reveled the documents and a day after airstrikes in Syria destroyed 200 missiles and killed 11 Iranians, Netanyahu ordered an unscheduled security cabinet meeting to discuss the reveal. Before the presentation, word got out that Netanyahu was to host a presentation on “developments” regarding the Iran nuclear deal.

After the presentation, Netanyahu asked ministers not to speak publicly about the Iran deal.  At the press conference, Netanyahu said Israel had obtained half a ton’s worth of documents related to the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program, consisting of 55,000 pages, another 55,000 files, and 183 CDs. He went on to present images and documents that he said detail a secret nuclear weapons program called Project Amad.

Netanyahu Orders Cabinet Meet In Secret Underground Bunker, Fears Leaks On Syria And Iran

If you believe that this coming war is to protect Israel: I have a bungalow house on Jupiter I would like to sell you! It is about Albert Pike’s Satanic World War 3 plan!

  • Netanyahu Orders Cabinet Meet In Secret Underground Bunker, Fears Leaks On Syria And Iran
    by Tyler Durden, https://www.zerohedge.com/
In yet another sign that broader war between Israel, Syria, and Iran may be on the horizon Israel’s Channel 10 has revealed in an exclusive broadcast that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently ordered all national security cabinet meetings to be held in a secure underground bunker in Jerusalem.

The National Security Cabinet (NSC), also known as the “inner cabinet,” is akin to the US National Security Council and convenes regularly under the authority of the prime minister in the Prime Minister’s building in Jerusalem. However, according to Channel 10’s Barak Ravid, who broke the story, Netanyahu made the decision out of fear of leaks related to “sensitive discussions on Syria and Iran.”

The underground secure Jerusalem bunker normally hosts the National Crisis Management Center, responsible for emergency planning and response during times of war or national crises.

Pompeo’s ‘Plan B’ for Iran is ‘Designed to Put the US’ on a Path to ‘Forcible Regime Change’ ie. War

  • Pompeo’s ‘Plan B’ for Iran is ‘Designed to Put the US’ on a Path to ‘Forcible Regime Change’
by Bonnie Kristian, a fellow at Defense Priorities, https://www.cnbc.com/
    * Secretary of State Mike Pompeo laid out the Trump administration’s new strategy for Iran after walking away from the Obama administration’s Iran nuclear deal.
    * There are three key problems in Pompeo’s “Plan B” speech which, if not corrected, will gravely undermine Americans’ security.

“Two weeks ago, President Trump terminated the United States’ participation in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), more commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo started his speech at the Heritage Foundation on Monday.

“President Trump withdrew from the deal for a simple reason,” he continued. “It failed to guarantee the safety of the American people from the risks created by the leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran.” Thus Pompeo began a talk grounded more in fantasy than strategy.

He spoke repeatedly of an Iranian “march across the Middle East,” painting Tehran as the mastermind of regional instability which poses an active, existential threat to U.S. friends and allies.

The “path forward,” as Pompeo described it, is for Iran to submit to onerous new U.S. sanctions and concede to a long list of demands. It is a list so exacting it is difficult to believe, as Daniel Larison notes at The American Conservative, that Pompeo could sincerely think it is a step away from conflict: The “ultimatum is so extensive and unreasonable that we have to assume that the administration intends for it to be rejected.”

    Three key problems
There are three key problems in Pompeo’s “Plan B” speech which, if not corrected, will gravely undermine Americans’ security, the Trump administration’s foreign policy, and the Iranian people’s ability to make their government more humane, democratic, and responsible.

First, Pompeo blamed the Iran deal for failing at what it never set out to do. His sweeping complaint that JCPOA could not protect the United States from every possible Iranian threat is less an indictment of the deal than a statement of fact: Such a broad accomplishment was never its aim.

No Plan B: New US Demands on Iran ‘Set Stage for War’

  • No Plan B: New US Demands on Iran ‘Set Stage for War’
    by , https://www.aljazeera.com/
New Iran strategy harks back to decades of failed US policy and raises spectre of conflict in Middle East, critics say.

A US air force plane was waiting for Mike Pompeo while he was taking the oath as the country’s new secretary of state in late April in Washington, DC. Promising to get the state department’s “swagger” back, Pompeo wasted no time after being sworn in, setting off on a whirlwind tour of the Middle East to Israel, Saudi Arabia and Jordan.

At every stop, the US’ top diplomat lambasted Iran, accusing it of being “the greatest sponsor of terrorism” in the world. He vowed to ensure Tehran never possessed a nuclear weapon.

A few days later, on May 9, President Donald Trump announced Washington was abandoning the 2015 nuclear deal – signed between Iran and six major powers – under which Tehran accepted limits on its nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief.

The pullout was strongly opposed by the pact’s other signatories, including Washington’s European allies, and caused jitters in some of Europe’s biggest companies over the fate of multi-billion dollar deals made with Iran. In Tehran, the prospect of further punishing sanctions weighed down on residents, increased anti-White House sentiment and prompted the country’s foreign minister to embark on a diplomatic tour to save the deal.

With the pact’s future in question, Pompeo – now back in the US capital and four weeks into his new role – took to the stage at the Heritage Foundation on Monday to deliver his first major foreign policy speech.

Unsurprisingly, he focused on Iran. Iran must change its domestic and foreign policy, the former CIA director said, as he set out 12 demands for inclusion in any future nuclear treaty with Tehran. Failing to comply will result in “the strongest sanctions in history”, he threatened.

The tough conditions in the US administration’s so-called Plan B on Iran included Tehran withdrawing all its forces from Syria, halting uranium enrichment and nuclear-capable missiles, as well as ending support for a range of groups in the Middle East, such as Hezbollah and Hamas.

Pompeo Threatens Iran With Strongest Sanctions in History, Speeding U.S. March Toward War

  • Democracy Now! Published on May 22, 2018
https://democracynow.org – On Monday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo used his first major policy address to threaten Iran with “the strongest sanctions in history.” Pompeo presented a list of 12 “basic requirements” for a new nuclear treaty with Iran, including “unqualified access” to all nuclear sites and an end to its interventions in Yemen. This comes just under two weeks after the Trump administration withdrew the United States from the Iran nuclear deal. “Pompeo and Bolton have made the choice for the international community much, much easier,” says Trita Parsi, founder and president of the National Iranian American Council. “Either you collaborate with the Trump administration and go along with these sanctions, walk away from this nuclear deal and speed up this march toward war—or you resist.”
