Sanctions, Sanctions, Sanctions – the Final Demise of the Dollar Hegemony?

  • Sanctions, Sanctions, Sanctions – the Final Demise of the Dollar Hegemony?
by Peter Koenig for The Saker Blog, http://thesaker.is/
Sanctions left and sanctions right. Financial mostly, taxes, tariffs, visas, travel bans – confiscation of foreign assets, import and export prohibitions and limitations; and also punishing those who do not respect sanctions dished out by Trump, alias the US of A, against friends of their enemies. The absurdity seems endless and escalating – exponentially, as if there was a deadline to collapse the world. Looks like a last-ditch effort to bring down international trade in favor of — what? – Make America Great Again? – Prepare for US mid-term elections? – Rally the people behind an illusion? – Or what?

All looks arbitrary and destructive. All is of course totally illegal by any international law or, forget law, which is not respected anyway by the empire and its vassals, but not even by human moral standards. Sanctions are destructive. They are interfering in other countries sovereignty. They are made to punish countries, nations, that refuse to bend to a world dictatorship.

Looks like everybody accepts this new economic warfare as the new normal. Nobody objects. And the United Nations, the body created to maintain Peace, to protect our globe from other wars, to uphold human rights – this very body is silent – out of fear? Out of fear that it might be ‘sanctioned’ into oblivion by the dying empire? – Why cannot the vast majority of countries – often it is a ratio of 191 to 2 (Israel and the US) – reign-in the criminals?

Imagine Turkey – sudden massive tariffs on aluminum (20%) and steel (50%) imposed by Trump, plus central bank currency interference had the Turkish Lira drop by 40%, and that ‘only’ because Erdogan is not freeing US pastor Andrew Brunson, who faces in Turkey a jail sentence of 35 years for “terror and espionage”. An Izmir court has just turned down another US request for clemency, however, converting his jail sentence to house arrest for health reason. It is widely believed that Mr. Brunson’s alleged 23 years of ‘missionary work’ is but a smoke screen for spying.

President Erdogan has just declared he would look out for new friends, including new trading partners in the east – Russia, China, Iran, Ukraine, even the unviable EU, and that his country is planning issuing Yuan-denominated bonds to diversify Turkey’s economy, foremost the country’s reserves and gradually moving away from the dollar hegemony.

The Western Financial System Teeters on the Brink — Only a New Bretton Woods Agreement Among the Four Powers Can Prevent Chaos

  • The Western Financial System Teeters on the Brink — Only a New Bretton Woods Agreement Among the Four Powers Can Prevent Chaos
    by https://larouchepac.com/
The Western monetary system is hanging by a thread. The immediate panic in Turkey, Argentina and elsewhere eased slightly today, but the problem is not localized to one or more crisis points — it is systemic, the result of the past ten years’ refusal to change the policies which caused the 2008 breakdown. When Wall Street exploded in 2008, Bush and Obama showed their colors — the red, white and blue of the Union Jack, not the U.S. flag — refusing to implement Lyndon LaRouche’s call for restoring FDR’s Glass Steagall Act, while enacting laws which encouraged a full return of the derivative speculation at the expense of the real economy. This led to the revolt of the population expressed in the election of Donald Trump, who pledged to restore the US industrial economy and end the perpetual imperial warfare.

Now, however, as LaRouche insisted after the 2008 crash, Glass Steagall alone will not do the job. Nothing short of an entirely new world financial order can succeed in replacing the “Casino Mondial” of floating exchange rates and unbridled speculation, which has taken the place of investment into the real economy, with the IMF and the ECB as the “enforcement” mechanism. Such a New Bretton Woods approach is required, restoring fixed exchange rates in a gold reserve system, while “New Silk Road” projects based on national credit expand the productivity and well being of the entire human race.

Achieving such a new paradigm requires that Donald Trump sit down with the leaders of the other three great powers in the world — Russia, China and India — to formulate such a new Bretton Woods agreement. This was LaRouche’s insight in 2009, that only these four powers acting in tandem would have the power to replace the British Empire with a new financial system among sovereign nations based on real development. This vision was confirmed at the historic BRICS Summit in South Africa last month, where Russia, China and India dedicated themselves to extending the spirit and function of the New Silk Road to all of Africa and the so-called developing sector.

Trump has declared, repeatedly, that Xi Jinping, Vladimir Putin and Narendra Modi are friends, despite the massive effort by the British and their assets in the U.S. to turn the nation against both Russia and China. Now, the Russiagate scam is exposed and could soon be ended, with the accusers becoming the accused. Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani declared that it is time for Obama’s CIA chief John Brennan to be brought before a Grand Jury for his criminal connivance with British intelligence operative Christopher Steele, who orchestrated the ongoing coup attempt against the government of the United states. Leading Congressmen are now focused on the British intelligence role in the Russiagate coup attempt. This cleansing of the British imperial filth within the U.S. establishment must be successfully completed, immediately, freeing Trump to do what he must, through the Four Power alignment: to create the New Bretton Woods.

Russia Proposes Deal with Turkey to Ditch US Dollar for Lira-Ruble Trade Amid Currency Crisis

  • Russia Proposes Deal with Turkey to Ditch US Dollar for Lira-Ruble Trade Amid Currency Crisis
    by https://www.rt.com/
Moscow is still interested in trading with Ankara using the Russian ruble and Turkish lira, according to the Kremlin. Both currencies have been falling against the greenback, with lira setting new record lows every day.

“The issue of using national currencies in bilateral trade operations is a topic that has been raised by the Russian side for a long time and consistently at various levels, including at the top level,”
    said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

“This is what we are striving for in our bilateral trade and economic relations, and what has been repeatedly mentioned at the bilateral Russian-Turkish talks,” he added.

The lira plummeted to a record low of 7.20 against the dollar before strengthening to 6.16 on Wednesday amid mounting pressure from new US sanctions. Washington began to apply economic pressure on Ankara after the detention of American pastor Andrew Brunson in Turkey. Brunson is accused of aiding the failed military coup in 2016. He is facing 35 years in a Turkish prison.

The US also introduced new sanctions against Russia last week over the poisoning of double-agent Sergei Skripal. Washington has refused to provide any proof to support allegations of Moscow’s responsibility for the incident. The Russian ruble fell to its lowest level since 2016 against the dollar following the news.

According to the Kremlin spokesman, the financial and economic situation in Turkey was not yet affecting the implementation of joint projects with Russia.

“I do not know that this situation may somehow affect the development of projects. Everything is proceeding as usual,”
     Peskov told reporters.

Russia Finance Minister: We May Abandon Dollar In Oil Trade As It Is Becoming “Too Risky”

  • Russia Finance Minister: We May Abandon Dollar In Oil Trade As It Is Becoming “Too Risky”
    by Tyler Durden, https://www.zerohedge.com/
One month ago, the bond market and political pundits did a double take when according to the latest Treasury International Capital report, Russia had liquidated virtually all of its US Treasury holdings, selling off the bulk of its US government bonds in just two months, March and April.

And with the US threatening to impose a new set of “crushing” sanctions on Russia, including in retaliation for the alleged Novichok nerve gas attack in the UK, Russia not only intends to continue liquidating its US holdings, but to significantly reduce its reliance on the US Dollar.

Speaking in an interview for the Rossiya 1 TV channel, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said that Russia “aims to keep reducing its investments in American securities” following new U.S. sanctions and said that the “US dollar is becoming an unreliable tool for payments in international trade.” The minister also hinted at the possibility of using national currencies instead of the dollar in oil trade.

“I do not rule it out. We have significantly reduced our investment in US assets. In fact, the dollar, which is considered to be the international currency, becomes a risky tool for payments,” Siluanov noted.

On Friday, the Russian ruble sank to the lowest level in over two years after news about new US sanctions against Russia over the alleged poisoning of former Russian intelligence officer Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury, UK, coupled with general selling of emerging market currencies as a result of the growing Turkish financial crisis.

Official: Russia Considering Any Change to Iran’s Nuclear Deal “Destructive”

  • Official: Russia Considering Any Change to Iran’s Nuclear Deal “Destructive”
    by http://en.farsnews.com/Default.aspx
TEHRAN (FNA)- Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova announced that Moscow will continue to honor its commitments under the landmark 2015 Iran nuclear deal reached with major world powers as long as other countries abide by their obligations.

“My country would deem any changes to the deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), as destructive that could destabilize the already-volatile Middle East region,” Zakharova said.

She underlined that Washington’s course at bringing down the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on the Iranian nuclear program and restoring full-scale pressure through sanctions is absolutely unconstructive.

Zakharova underlined that the Trump administration’s measures would entail “long-term deplorable consequences for global nonproliferation of the weapons of mass destruction and will impart a destabilizing impulse to the situation in the Middle East”.

On Tuesday — when the US reintroduced its bans on Iran — the Russian Foreign Ministry released a statement and criticized the US for violating UN Security Council Resolution 2231 that endorsed the Iran deal.

“We denounce any unilateral sanctions in circumvention of the UN Security Council decisions, all the more so if they have exterritorial applications and affect the interests of third countries, as is the case with the current US restrictions against Iran,” the statement said.

Russia has vowed to reinforce its relations with Iran in all sectors now that the US has left the accord and chosen to build up economic pressure on the Islamic Republic.

Vladimir Yermakov, Director General of the Department for Nonproliferation and Arms Control at Russia’s Foreign Ministry, had said in early May that with the US exit “it might even be easier for us on the economic front, because we won’t have any limits on economic cooperation with Iran.”

US President Donald Trump announced on May 8 that Washington would no longer remain part of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and promised to re-impose the highest level of economic sanctions against Iran.

The sanctions reinstated on Iran on May 8 included boycott of Iran’s crude supplies and bans on transfer of its crude revenues. There is a 180 days interval before these sanctions come into effect. Other US secondary sanctions are reinstated this month.

After Trump’s declaration, the Iranian government issued a statement, calling the US withdrawal as “unlawful”. The statement underlined Iran’s prerequisites for continuing the deal with the five world powers. These conditions that were reiterated later by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei later mainly included Iran’s guaranteed crude sales and transfer of its revenues back home.

Two months later, the other five powers party to the nuclear deal have failed to satisfy Iran. President Hassan Rouhani voiced his disappointment over a recent package of incentives proposed by the European Union countries to Tehran, and said that the Islamic Republic expected a much better, clearer and explicit stance by the EU.

Chomsky: Israel Not Russia, Meddling in US Elections

  • ravenise005 Published on Aug 2, 2018
    Watch Full Show: https://www.democracynow.org/shows/20…
Renowned American scholar and political activist Noam Chomsky has accused Israel of meddling in US elections, stressing that the Israeli intervention “vastly overwhelms” any efforts allegedly carried out by Russia in 2016. “First of all, if you’re interested in foreign interference in our elections, whatever the Russians may have done barely counts or weighs in the balance as compared with what another state does, openly, brazenly and with enormous support,” Chomsky said in an interview with Democracy Now! published on Tuesday.

“Israeli intervention in US elections vastly overwhelms anything the Russians may have done, I mean, even to the point where the prime minister of Israel, Netanyahu, goes directly to Congress, without even informing the president, and speaks to Congress, with overwhelming applause, to try to undermine the president’s policies – what happened with Obama and Netanyahu in 2015,” he added. Chomsky was referring to a speech by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in March 2015, when he addressed the joint houses of Congress about the yet to be signed Iran nuclear deal. The Israeli premier delivered the speech without formally informing the White House, a move that was said to have infuriated then-president Barack Obama. More than 50 Democrats boycotted Netanyahu’s speech at that time.

In his comments during the interview, the American scholar said Russian President Vladimir Putin had never made such a speech to Congress and that no foreign leader had ever attacked the policy of the US administration so acidly. “Did Putin come to give an address to the joint sessions of Congress trying to…calling on them to reverse US policy, without even informing the president,” Chomsky said. “And that’s just a tiny bit of this overwhelming influence. So if you happen to be interested in influence of- foreign influence on elections, there are places to look. But even that is a joke,” he added.

Russia to Treat Further US Sanctions as an Open Declaration of Economic War – PM

  • Russia to Treat Further US Sanctions as an Open Declaration of Economic War – PM
    by https://www.rt.com/
Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has warned the US that any sanctions targeting Russian banking operations and currency trade will be treated as a declaration of economic war and retaliated against by any means necessary.

“If they introduce something like a ban on banking operations or the use of any currency, we will treat it as a declaration of economic war. And we’ll have to respond to it accordingly – economically, politically, or in any other way, if required,”
Medvedev said during a trip to the Kamchatka region.

“Our American friends should make no mistake about it,”
     he emphasized.

Medvedev noted that Russia has a long history of surviving economic restrictions and never caved in to the pressure in the past. “Our country had been living under constant pressure through sanctions for the last hundred years,” Medvedev said, accusing the US and its allies of employing sanctions to undercut global competition. “Nothing has changed.”

The prime minister said that by targeting Russia’s gas exports to Europe, Washington wants to push its own LNG shipments to the continent. “It’s an absolutely nonmarket anti-competition measure aimed at strangling our capabilities.”

Medvedev pointed out that the US is simultaneously imposing tariffs on China. “The Chinese, obviously, don’t like it. No one does. And our goal is to resist all these measures.”

On Wednesday, the US State Department announced a new round of sanctions targeting Russian exports of dual-purpose electronics and other national security-controlled equipment, which will come into effect on August 22.

The stated reasoning behind latest punitive actions are accusations levelled against Russia over the Sergei and Yulia Skripal poisoning back in March, which the UK and its allies pinned on Moscow without due investigation. Washington subsequently accused Moscow of breaking the 1991 international law against chemical and biological warfare.

The Kremlin has repeatedly denied the allegations, while the UK authorities have provided no proof of Russia’s involvement in the case. Furthermore, Moscow eliminated all stockpiles of its chemical weapons under international obligations, unlike the US, which has still to honor its commitment.

While Russia reserved the right to retaliate against new trade restrictions, the US threatened to intensify sanctions within three months, by potentially cutting off nearly all exports and imports and banning the Russian airline Aeroflot from flying to the US.

To avoid further pressure, Washington demands that Moscow confess and provide “reliable assurances” that Russia will not use chemical weapons in the future. The US also seeks to have “on-site inspections” of alleged chemical production facilities, which Russia has already shut down.
