Eight NATO Air Forces to Fly to Ukraine for Massive Drill

  • Eight NATO Air Forces to Fly to Ukraine for Massive Drill
Soldiers from eight foreign militaries, including the US, will converge on Ukraine next month for the country’s largest aviation exercise yet.

Starokostiantyniv Air Base, about 150 miles southwest of the capital of Kiev, will play host to some 950 personnel from the United States, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania and the United Kingdom as they engage in the Clear Sky multinational exercise, Stars and Stripes reported Wednesday.

The Clear Sky exercises will train soldiers in air sovereignty, air interdiction, air-to-ground integration, air mobility operations, aeromedical evaluation, cyberdefense and personnel recovery, Stars and Stripes reported.

The announcement comes on the heels of the Ukrainian government announcing it would open a new military base on the Sea of Azov, a shallow body of water straddled by Russia’s Rostov, Krasnodar and Crimea regions, but most of the north coast of which belongs to Ukraine.

US President Donald Trump’s special envoy to Ukraine, Kurt Volker, told the media Tuesday that “wherever” gaps in the Ukrainian military’s capabilities exist, the US is “prepared to sit down and talk with Ukraine about what their needs are. They can buy things through our foreign military sales,” Sputnik reported.

Ukraine isn’t a NATO member but has expressed interest in joining the alliance, which has slowly pushed eastward in the decades since the end of socialism in Eastern Europe. Ukraine’s interest has grown in NATO since 2014, when a right-wing, pro-Western government was brought to power after pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych walked away from a trade proposal with the European Union in favor of a Russian alternative agreement.

Late last month, US National Security Adviser John Bolton, returning from a trip to Kiev, told Reuters that Ukraine had made progress in its efforts to join NATO, but it still had work to do.

Bolton told reporters that it was dangerous not to resolve the Ukraine crisis, referring to the Crimean Republic’s 2014 vote to join Russia and the continued independence of cities in the Donets Basin.

Azov Sea Flashpoint: Russia, Ukraine Teetering on the Brink of War

  • Azov Sea Flashpoint: Russia, Ukraine Teetering on the Brink of War
Ukraine has increased its military presence in the Azov Sea region. Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council met on Sept. 7 and agreed to take a variety of steps to boost the country’s combat capabilities in the area, including the creation of a missile-equipped naval infantry group to counter potential amphibious attacks and naval shore bombardments. Ukraine’s Gurza-M-class armored artillery boats have been brought in to boost the naval component of the forces deployed in the region.

Russia and Ukraine enjoy free use of the Sea of Azov under the 2003 “Agreement between the Russian Federation and the Ukraine on cooperation in the use of the sea of Azov and the strait of Kerch.” The document is in place but it does not specify any precise border. The parties agree that the Sea of Azov and the Strait of Kerch are the internal waters of both Ukraine and Russia.

Talks have dragged on for a long time but have failed to produce a solution. Ukraine does not want to recognize Russia’s rights, which are based on the fact that Crimea has joined the Russian Federation. Moreover, Ukrainian authorities insist on their right to detain any ship traveling to or from Crimea without Kiev’s permission.

Ukraine is calling for the imposition of international sanctions against Russian Black Sea ports, due to what it calls the “blockade” of the Sea of Azov. It has already imposed punitive measures unilaterally. Tensions have heightened since March, when ships were detained and searched.  On March 24, Ukrainian border guards stopped the Russian-flagged, Crimean-registered Nord fishing vessel in the Sea of Azov. The ship was hijacked. The crew members reported being interrogated and abused by Ukrainian authorities who held them accountable under domestic laws, not recognizing the crew as Russian citizens. The detained sailors were finally set free to return to Crimea without passports. Ukraine violated a number of international agreements and this marked the beginning of a campaign of provocative actions that has been waged ever since. Last month, the Russian Mekhanik Pogodin tanker was detained in the Ukrainian port of Kherson. Russia compared the move to the activities of Somali pirates.

The US is taking sides in order to ratchet up the tensions.  The State Department has taken a deliberately provocative stance, urging Ukraine toward confrontation. Without bothering to study the details, it simply puts the blame on Russia as usual for anything that goes wrong. Washington is goading Ukraine into seeking a military solution, including such unrealistic but dangerous ideas as using the warships of NATO’s standing force to protect its shipping lanes, mining the Azov Sea, or  using fast-moving attack vessels to encircle a large Russian naval asset from all directions like a wolf pack. This tactic was invented by German Admiral Karl Dönitz during WWII, when “wolf packs” of U-boats were used to attack capital ships.  The very fact that such ideas have been generated and are floating around shows how unwise it is to abet Ukraine by throwing unconditional support behind it.

Russia and China Rehearse Nuclear World War III

WW3 is near?

  • Russia and China Rehearse Nuclear World War III
One of the largest military exercises ever to take place in history begins today. Russia’s Vostok 2018 war games will be even bigger than the Soviet Union’s largest military exercise in 1981. Russia’s Defense Ministry says the exercise will include 300,000 soldiers, 36,000 combat vehicles and 80 ships. The troop component is twice the size of the entire British Army.

“Looking at which and how many troops are involved, it’s clear that Russia is training for world war,” Sarah Pagung of the German Council on Foreign Relations told Deutsche Welle. Dr. Stephen Blank, a senior fellow at the American Foreign Policy Council, wrote for the Interpreter, “Clearly Russia is rehearsing a large-scale war.” And not just any war. Russia’s exercises include nuclear weapons.

Russia’s nuclear-capable missiles will be included in the drills. Russia’s two fleets capable of launching nuclear weapons are both participating. Civil authorities are also taking part: They are rehearsing Russian society’s ability to cope with nuclear war. And China is invited.

“Coming six months after Beijing’s biggest ever offshore naval drills, the joint war games are another reminder of how central military posturing now is to the world’s two most powerful authoritarian states,” wrote Peter Appa at Reuters.

Appa warned that “both Beijing and Moscow want to give every impression they are increasingly ready—and are relying on that message to dominate their neighborhoods and intimidate less-powerful nearby nations.”

Russia’s decision to invite China marks a major step in the already close relationship between the two. The two have held 30 joint training exercises since 2003, but Russia has never invited China to take part in a drill this important. Only virtual Russian puppet states, like Belarus, have been invited. The South China Morning Post wrote that “the decision to include China in Vostok 2018 surprised some defense analysts because the drills had previously been off-limits to foreign armed forces—and in some cases included potential conflict scenarios with China.”

Syria and Russia have vowed to flush the terrorists out of this area, yet Russia just announced that Syria is not preparing a major offensive against Idlib. In this edition of the debate, we will look at the looming battle for Idlib and the US claim that it’s worried about civilians there while in 20-17 it killed hundreds of them in Raqqa operation, which Amnesty International has called it the US-led “the war of annihilation”.

Marines Begin Amphibious Landing Exercises In Sweden Ahead Of Massive NATO War Games

  • Marines Begin Amphibious Landing Exercises In Sweden Ahead Of Massive NATO War Games
    by Tyler Durden,
The Marine Corps Times on Tuesday reported the details of the run-up to what’s being described as NATO’s largest ever military games in a decade, called Trident Juncture, set to take place right up along Russia’s border with Europe.

Currently, the US Marine Corps is engaged in preparatory maneuvers with Swedish counterparts in a training exercise that involves mock raids and amphibious operations up and down Sweden’s coastal island archipelagos.

Some 75 US Marines are said to be involved in the training which involves navigating an area of thousands of small islands known as the Stockholm Archipelago and which extend nearly 40 miles to the east into the Baltic Sea.

Russia is interpreting the exercises as a deeply provocative military action that signals NATO could be planning to use Scandinavian countries as a launch point for a potential future conflict.

The Marines are considered America’s most advanced forward deployed force “as the President may direct” according to their founding purpose and codified under the National Security Act of 1947. For this reason they are considered a “force projection” and “first to be deployed” unit in any major conflict.

Though Trident Juncture, which will involve nearly 40,000 NATO troops, is not set to start until later this Fall, the Marine exercise, called Archipelago Endeavor, is part of a broader and semi-permanent build-up of American Marine forces in Scandinavia which was first reported months ago.

It was revealed in early June that the Norwegian government, which is hosting the NATO games, intends to add 400 U.S. Marines to Norway before the most significant military exercise since the Cold War, according to the country’s Ministry of Defense. By the time the Trident Juncture games begin, about 700 Marines in total are expected to be present in the Scandinavian region, and will reportedly be based in Norway for a period of five years.

Predictably, Russia has responded by pointing to the “anti-Russia” nature of the impending NATO exercises

Paving the Road to the End of NATO. The Rise of United States of Europe & EU Army

  • Emphasis mine:
  • Paving the Road to the End of NATO
    by TOM LUONGO,
It’s no secret that President Trump believes NATO is an anachronism. It’s also no secret that French President Emmanuel Macron wants a Grand Army of the EU and a single EU Finance Minister to further integration of the EU into the United States of Europe.

He and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have been championing these two things since the day after Macron took office. They are both pushing hard for the EU to conduct independent foreign policy, framing Trump’s belligerence as the catalyst for its need now.

So, I’m not surprised in the wake of Merkel’s garden summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin recently that both of these policy initiatives are being pushed now.

Both Merkel and Macron are in trouble politically. Their approval ratings are dropping. Both have seen cabinet defections. So, they need political wins and rapprochement with Russia is something very much desired by many European nations, like Italy, and necessary to gain some economic momentum after four years of ruinous sanctions.

Macron now openly engages the idea of a security framework with Russia. The same Russia that not three months ago Macron was pulling diplomats from over the poisoning of Sergei and Yulia Skripal.

This admission on his part is major bombshell. If sincere, it changes the entire narrative and accelerates the shift of Europe away from the U.S.’s abusive use of the dollar as a whip to command compliance.

It also cuts to the heart of Trump’s criticisms of NATO, that the threat of Russian invasion of Eastern Europe as promoted by Poland and the Baltics is laughable.

In his recent press conference in Helsinki (ironic that), Macron echoed Merkel’s statements from earlier this year that Europe can no longer rely on the United States for its security; France should build a strategic partnership with Russia and Turkey.

I’ve been arguing for weeks now that Trump’s hostile policies towards Iran as well as Europe had the ultimate goal of accelerating the end of NATO by putting direct pressure on Germany and France to end the policy of using the U.S. as their defense pack horse.

Macron Believes EU Should Create ‘New Approaches to Security with Russia’

  • Macron Believes EU Should Create ‘New Approaches to Security with Russia’
STOCKHOLM (Sputnik) – French President Emmanuel Macron said Sunday that discussions with Russia were necessary and that he respected Russian President Vladimir Putin, alleging, however, that Putin dreams about “dismantling the European Union.”

“I respect Vladimir Putin and I am one of those who believe that we need to create new approaches to security with Russia, we need discussions with Russia, but Putin’s dream is to dismantle the EU,” the French president said during an interview with Sweden’s SVT broadcaster about European values and the difference between France and Russia.

Macron also put his country above Russia in terms of respect for human rights and democracy. “I have contacts with Putin constantly and respect him, but Russia is not an example from the point of view of human rights,” the French president said.

Despite deterioration of relations between Russia and France over the Ukrainian crisis, the leaders of both countries maintain cooperation. For example, Macron had talks with Putin at the 2018 St. Petersburg International Economic Forum and noted that he would like strategic dialogue between the two countries to gain new momentum on many economic, social and defense issues.

‘Love Story Over’: Macron Says EU Can’t Rely on US for Security – Is It Time to Start Wooing Russia?

  • ‘Love Story Over’: Macron Says EU Can’t Rely on US for Security – Is It Time to Start Wooing Russia?
Emmanuel Macron’s remark that Europe can’t rely on the US for security, along with hints at rapprochement with Russia, show a rift in EU-Washington ties – a relationship that’s crumbling amid pressure to end sanction policies.

“Europe can no longer rely on the United States for its security,”
the French President said in a recent foreign policy speech in Paris.

Relations between the US and France showed a promising start this year. “Handsy” interactions took place between Donald Trump and Macron during their summit in April, with the pair planting a tree together on the White House lawn. From those scenes, you would never guess that the allies would turn on each other only a month later.

The first fracture in relations occurred after Trump’s withdrawal from the landmark Iran nuclear deal. At that time, on the heels of Trump pulling out of the agreement, France’s economy minister urged Europe to stop acting like “US vassals” and continue trading with Tehran in defiance of what the “global economic policeman” had in store.

Trump’s import tariffs on steel and aluminium in June triggered a global backlash and retaliation from the EU. Macron called the measures “illegal” and warned that “economic nationalism leads to war,” adding that this is exactly “what happened in the 1930s.”

France Macron Calls for EU Security Ties with Russia, Turkey

  • PressTV Published on Aug 30, 2018
French President Emmanuel Macron has called for involving Russia and Turkey in the process of providing security to Europe. Macron said in a press conference in Helsinki that Europe can no longer rely on the US for its security. He added that the European Union needs strategic relationships including in defense matters with its closest neighbors to ensure greater stability. He said Paris should modernize its post-Cold War relations with Russia. The French leader said the amplified European sovereignty requires reviewing the architecture of European security and defense systems. Macron’s comment came as Russia and NATO locked horns over the Alliance’s military build-up in Eastern Europe.

Macron Says ‘Possible to Envisage’ New Common EU-Russian Defense ‘Architecture’

French President Emmanuel Macron and Finland’s President Sauli Niinisto speak during a news conference at the Presidential Palace in Helsinki, Finland August 30, 2018

  • Macron Says ‘Possible to Envisage’ New Common EU-Russian Defense ‘Architecture’
French President Emmanuel Macron has held talks with his Finnish counterpart Sauli Niinisto, discussing a number of issues including strategic relationships.

“In terms of cybersecurity, in terms of defense, of strategic partnership, it is possible, in fact, to envisage terms of a new common architecture between the European Union and Russia,” Macron said at a joint press conference with his Finnish counterpart Sauli Niinisto. The French president has stated that the continent’s security shouldn’t depend on the US.

“It is in our interest for the EU to have a strategic relationship with Turkey as well as with Russia that brings stability, that will in the long term bring more strength and coherency,” Macron said in a press conference in Helsinki.

According to French President Emmanuel Macron, Europe can no longer rely on the United States for its security; France should build a strategic partnership with Russia and Turkey.

Emmanuel Macron earlier introduced an initiative to set up a European military intervention force that could be rapidly deployed in the event of a crisis.

The European Union plans to spend 20 billion euros on defense between 2021 and 2027, with the majority of it to be used in the research and development of new military technologies.

NATO Alarm: Russia Announces Vast Scale of World’s Biggest Military Exercise Since Cold War – And China is Taking Part

  • NATO Alarm: Russia Announces Vast Scale of World’s Biggest Military Exercise Since Cold War – And China is Taking Part
    by AFP, via
Chinese forces begin arriving for the massive Vostok-2018 exercises, involving 300,000 troops and 1,000 aircraft, which will simulate large-scale warfare in Russia’s east

Russia will flex its military muscles and hold the world’s biggest war games since the cold war era next month, including almost 300,000 troops and 1,000 aircraft, the defence ministry said, leading Nato to warn of a “more assertive Russia”.

The Vostok-2018, or East 18, exercises simulating large-scale warfare, which the Kremlin called “justified”, will be carried out from September 11 to 15 in the country’s east, with troops from China and Mongolia also taking part.

Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said the exercises would be similar in size to those held in September 1981 by the Soviet authorities, called Zapad-81, or West 81.

Those were unprecedented at the time in terms of the number of troops and military hardware, with around 100,000 troops involved, Russian television reported. “This will be something of a repeat of Zapad-81, but in some senses even bigger,” Shoigu said in comments reported by Russian news agencies.

The war games come as Russia is hit by the latest round of US sanctions and faces even harsher ones over its alleged role in a nerve agent attack in Britain, with relations with the West at their lowest ebb since the cold war.

Nato spokesman Dylan White said that since Vostok-2018 would take place east of the Ural Mountains, Moscow was not obliged to notify the West or invite observers from the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, although an invitation had been extended to military attaches. The planned drill showed “a more assertive Russia, significantly increasing its defence budget and its military presence,” White said.

NATO Sees Russia’s Vostok 2018 Drills as Preparation For Conflict – Spokesman

  • NATO Sees Russia’s Vostok 2018 Drills as Preparation For Conflict – Spokesman
BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – NATO will closely monitor Russia’s Vostok 2018 exercises, expects them to be transparent and predictable, acting NATO Deputy Spokesman Dylan White told Sputnik on Tuesday.

“All nations have the right to exercise their armed forces, but it is essential that this is done in a transparent and predictable manner. NATO and Russia exchanged reciprocal briefings on military exercises at a meeting of the NATO-Russia Council in May. We routinely monitor Russian exercises. We are doing the same with Vostok 2018,” White said.

“Allied military attaches in Moscow have been invited to a voluntary observation of the exercise. This offer is under consideration. Vostok demonstrates Russia’s focus on exercising large-scale conflict. It fits into a pattern we have seen over some time: a more assertive Russia, significantly increasing its defense budget and its military presence,” he said.

The exercise “Vostok-2018” will be held in August-September with the participation of the Eastern and Central Military District forces and the Northern Fleet. The main exercises for Russia’s military transport aircraft this year will be strategic maneuvers.

NATO has been significantly expanding its presence in Eastern Europe after the outburst of the Ukrainian crisis in 2014 using alleged Russian interference in the Ukrainian internal activities as a pretext.

Moscow has many times asserted its protests against the NATO military buildup stating that this move will undermine regional balance and result in a new arms race.
