Syria is Becoming a Black Hole of Cold War Entanglements

World War 3 is near?

  • Syria is Becoming a Black Hole of Cold War Entanglements
    by Alan Philps, https://www.thenational.ae/
The chaos on the ground is providing opportunities for the Russians and Americans to come to blows, writes Alan Philps.

It was only two months ago that Vladimir Putin declared victory in Syria and announced – not for the first time – that he would start withdrawing Russian forces. It was understood that Mr Putin, facing an election campaign next month, was keen to move the Syrian war to a new stage, that of diplomacy where Russian diplomats and generals would oversee a difficult peace process.

The war has indeed reached a new stage – but it is one of escalating violence and grotesque chaos as the cast of outside powers and foreign mercenaries clash in a blood-soaked scramble for power and influence. How has this come about, and when might the longed-for endgame come to pass?

The salient feature is that Russia and the US are more deeply engaged in Syria than ever. Despite their premature claim of victory, the Russians are there to stay as the leading outside power. It had been thought that the Americans might withdraw from Syria now that the Salafi-jihadists of ISIL have been defeated there and in Iraq. But Washington has made clear that the 2,000 military personnel will remain for the foreseeable future to counter Iran.

Despite their enduring commitment, the two former superpowers are determined on one thing: not to get sucked into a full-scale war, such as was the case in Afghanistan with the Russians and Iraq for the Americans. For Mr Putin the stakes are clear: Russian history shows that losing a war topples regimes – the Tsars in the First World War and the Communists in Afghanistan.

The two big powers share another common issue: their allies are unruly, with disruptive goals inside Syria. Some of the loudest rhetoric heard in recent days is from the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan – a treaty ally of the United States in Nato – who has sent troops into northern Syria and is threatening to crush the US-backed Kurdish militia on his southern border. For Turkey, the Kurdish proto-state to the south looks like an offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, known as the PKK, which has battled the Turkish state for decades.

Overthrowing Syrian Govt is Aim of West’s Proposed UNSC Resolution – Lavrov

  • Overthrowing Syrian Govt is Aim of West’s Proposed UNSC Resolution – Lavrov
    by https://www.rt.com/
The real goal of the West-brokered UN Security Council resolution on Syria is to put the blame on Damascus for everything and provide cover for militants, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said.

The authors of the resolution on humanitarian issues in Syria, which is to be discussed at the UNSC meeting on Thursday evening, want to “shift the focus” from the peace process “to blaming the Syrian government in order to promote ‘plan B,’ namely overthrowing the regime in violation of resolution 2257,” Lavrov said at a news conference in Belgrade.

If the US continues to ignore Russia’s position, Moscow will have no other choice than to infer that the authors of the initiative “again want to put the blame on Damascus and provide cover for militant groups,” the minister added.

Russia is also preparing a resolution on humanitarian issues in Syria, amid concerns over the escalating violence in the country. Eastern Ghouta, a suburb of Damascus, has seen a new wave of clashes between Syrian government forces and both rebel and Islamist factions operating in the area.

Together with Iran and Turkey, Russia is tasked with enforcing the ceasefire in Eastern Ghouta, one of the de-escalation zones established as a result of the Astana talks in May 2017. The Russian Center for Reconciliation in Syria earlier suggested the militants leaving the area, but the proposal was rejected, according to Lavrov.

“The Al-Nusra Front [currently known as Jabhat Fateh Al-Sham] and those who interact with it have firmly rejected the proposal and continue to shell the city from their positions, using the civilian population of Eastern Ghouta as a human shield,”
     the diplomat stressed.

US Military Establishment Risking WWIII to Maintain Hegemony: Analyst

  • US Military Establishment Risking WWIII to Maintain Hegemony: Analyst
    by http://www.presstv.com/
The United States military establishment is risking the Third World War in order to maintain American hegemony, a political analyst says.

James Jatras, a former Senate foreign policy adviser in Washington, made the remarks in an interview with Press TV on Tuesday while commenting on a report which says the United States wants Russia to get used to American military presence on its doorsteps in the Black Sea. As part of its plans to counter what it calls “the Russian aggression,” the US has recently deployed two warships to the Black Sea.

The US Navy announced Saturday that Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Carney had joined USS Ross, another warship of the same family, in the international waters near Russian territories.

It has now turned out that the decision is part of Washington’s efforts to “desensitize Russia” to the US military presence in the Black Sea, which separates Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Western Asia, CNN reported Monday night, quoting an unnamed US military official.

Worlds War Over Syria: The West Will Experience a Shattering Defeat

  • I still have questions about Erdogan’s threats to engage Syria in Afrin. Is he playing a game of deception against the US? His forces have started shelling Syrian troops arriving in Afrin. So may be I’m reading too much into this. But Erdogan-Turkey and Syria are both aligned with Russia now. So it is getting pretty confusing.
  • Worlds War Over Syria: The West Will Experience a Shattering Defeat
    by İbrahim Karagül, https://www.yenisafak.com/en/
The global power equilibrium, from the U.S. to Europe, the Middle East to South Asia, Russia to the Asia-Pacific area, has been overturned. No principle, opportunity, ideal, supranational value or regulation is in place or effective anymore. We are experiencing one of the sharpest twists in the history of humanity. We are experiencing the atmosphere prior to the world wars more than ever.

None of the small-scale debates, conflicts, crises, operations carried out through terror, financial fights, countries’ extraordinary defense preparations, the state’s efforts to strengthen the center power domain, abnormal power pursuits, determined and angry national integrity messages, intense efforts aimed at social solidarity are independent of one another.

A showdown never before seen in history is approaching
All of these are the efforts to prepare for the great danger awaiting the world. There is a global showdown, a storm in the true sense, and these are the preliminary signs of a great war. All countries that are aware of themselves, including Turkey, are in a state of alert.

It cannot be known for certain what we will be facing in the coming period and to what kind of situation the world will be dragged. However, we now know that the current small clashes are part of a major showdown and that great showdown is fast nearing.

No regional solidarity, no traditional chain of alliance, no country’s power that is considered to be “unlimited” can or will hold the world in one setting any longer without any extraordinary change happening. The arrogant powers of the Atlantic alliance, the countries that had a monopoly over the power in the past will lose this power and opportunity, and are rapidly doing so. And as they are losing it, they are making preparations to drag the entire world to disaster.

The West will experience a shattering defeat
All countries from Latin America to Asia and Africa are aligning themselves to stave off this thieving power of centuries; they are building rapport among themselves and are in a search. Regardless of how much it resembles the time before the two world wars, this time the global power map has caught a momentum of change and the results of the big new crisis will not be like that of the period after the two world wars.

Falsehoods and Lies: Inciting War Is a War Crime

  • Falsehoods and Lies: Inciting War Is a War Crime
    by https://www.strategic-culture.org/
The torrent of reckless false accusations against Russia made by the US and its NATO allies is hitting warp speed. This week saw more baseless allegations of Russian cyber attacks on American elections and British industries. There were also crass claims by US officials that Russia was behind so-called sonic attacks on American diplomats in Cuba.

Then a Dutch foreign minister was forced to resign after he finally admitted telling lies for the past two years over alleged Russian plans for regional aggression.

Elsewhere, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson claimed this week during a tour of the Middle East that “the primary goal” of his nation’s involvement in Syria is “to defeat” Islamic State (Daesh) terrorism.

This is patently false given that the US forces illegally occupying parts of Syria are launching lethal attacks on Syrian armed forces who are actually fighting Islamic State and their myriad terrorist affiliates. Meanwhile, US ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley accused Russia of blocking peace efforts in Syria – another audacious falsehood to add to her thick compendium of calumny.

Perhaps the most barefaced falsehood transpired this week when French President Emmanuel Macron candidly admitted that his government did not have any proof of chemical weapons being used in Syria.

“Today, our agencies, our armed forces have not established that chemical weapons, as set out in treaties, have been used against the civilian population,” said Macron to media in Paris. His admission follows that of US Defense Secretary James Mattis who also fessed up earlier this month to having no evidence of chemical weapons being deployed in Syria.

“We have other reports from the battlefield from people who claim it’s been used,” said Mattis to reporters at the Pentagon. “We do not have evidence of it.” Yet, only a few weeks ago, the French and US government were condemning Syrian President Assad for alleged use of chemical weapons by his forces. France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian and US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson also accused Russia of bearing responsibility because of its alliance with Damascus.

But now we are told that the French and US governments do not, in fact, have any evidence concerning chemical weapons in Syria.

This provocative, thoroughly researched book explores the covert aspects of U.S. foreign policy. Prominent political analyst Peter Dale Scott marshals a convincing array of evidence to expose the extensive trail of sanctioned but illicit violence in politics and state affairs, especially when related to America’s long-standing involvement with the global drug traffic. Beginning with Thailand in the 1950s, Americans have become inured to the CIA’s alliances with drug traffickers (and their bankers) to install and sustain right-wing governments. The pattern has repeated itself in Laos, Vietnam, Italy, Mexico, Thailand, Nigeria, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Panama, Honduras, Turkey, Pakistan, and now Afghanistan-to name only those countries dealt with in this book. The so-called war on terror, and in particular the war in Afghanistan, constitutes only the latest chapter in this disturbing story. Click on image to goto Amazon.

The US is Executing a Global War Plan

  • The US is Executing a Global War Plan
    by FINIAN CUNNINGHAM, https://www.strategic-culture.org/
Washington is moving inevitably on a global war plan. That’s the grim conclusion one has to draw from three unfolding war scenarios.

Ultimately, it’s about American imperialism trying to assert hegemony over the international order for the benefit of US capitalism. Russia and China are prime targets for this global assault.

The three unfolding war scenarios are seen in Syria, North Korea and Ukraine. These are not disparate, disassociated conflicts. They are inter-related expressions of the American war plans. War plans which involve the moving of strategic military power into position.

Last week’s massacre of over 100 Syrian government forces by American warplanes near Deir ez-Zor was an audacious overt assault by the US on the Syrian state. The US, along with other NATO allies, have been up to now waging a seven-year proxy war for regime change against Russia’s ally, President Assad. The massacre last week was certainly not the first time that US forces, illegally present in Syria, have attacked the Syrian army. But it seems clearer than ever now that American forces are operating on the overt agenda for regime change. US troops are transparently acting like an occupation army, challenging Russia and its legally mandated support for the Syrian state.

Heightening international concerns are multiple reports that Russian military contractors were among the casualties in the US-led air strike near Deir ez-Zor last week.

Regarding North Korea, Washington is brazenly sabotaging diplomatic efforts underway between the respective Korean leaderships in Pyongyang and Seoul. While this inter-Korean dialogue has been picking up positive momentum, the US has all the while been positioning nuclear-capable B-52 and B-2 bombers in the region, along with at least three aircraft carriers. The B-2s are also reportedly armed with 14-tonne bunker-buster bombs – the largest non-nuclear warhead in the American arsenal, designed to destroy North Korean underground missile silos and “decapitate” the Pyongyang leadership of Kim Jong-un.

American vice-president Mike Pence, while attending the Winter Olympics in South Korea, opening last week, delivered a blunt war message. He said that the recent detente between North Korea and US ally South Korea will come to an end as “soon as the Olympic flame is extinguished” – when the games close later this month. This US policy of belligerence completely upends Russia and China’s efforts to facilitate inter-Korean peace diplomacy.

Meanwhile, the situation in Eastern Ukraine looks decidedly grim for an imminent US-led invasion of the breakaway Donbas region. Pentagon military inspectors have in the past week reportedly arrived along the Contact Zone that separates the US-backed Kiev regime forces and the pro-Russian separatists of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics. Donetsk’s military commander Eduard Basurin warned that the arrival of Pentagon and other NATO military advisors from Britain and Canada indicate that US-armed Kiev forces are readying for a renewed assault on the Donbas ethnic Russian population.

Even the normally complacent observers of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), charged with monitoring a nominal ceasefire along the Contact Zone, have lately begun reporting serious advancement of heavy weapons by the Kiev forces – in violation of the 2015 Minsk Peace Accord.

If the US-led Kiev forces proceed with the anticipated offensive next month in Donbas there are real fears for extreme civilian casualties. Such “ethnic cleansing” of Russian people by Kiev regime forces that openly espouse Neo-Nazi ideology would mostly likely precipitate a large-scale intervention by Moscow as a matter of humanitarian defense. Perhaps that is what the US planners are wagering on, which can then be portrayed by the dutiful Western news media as “another Russian aggression”.

US-based political analyst Randy Martin says: “It is undeniable that Washington is on a war footing in three global scenarios. Preparation for war is in fact war.”

Dutch Lies Over Putin’s ‘Aggression’ Expose NATO War Agenda

  • Dutch Lies Over Putin’s ‘Aggression’ Expose NATO War Agenda
    by FINIAN CUNNINGHAM, https://www.strategic-culture.org/
Netherlands Prime Minister Mark Rutte was this week forced to bear a parliamentary vote of no confidence after his foreign minister finally came clean over a dangerous lie he has been telling for two years concerning Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Halbe Zijlstra quit in shame on Monday as the country’s foreign minister after admitting that a story he had peddled about personally hearing Putin plotting to create a “greater Russia” was false. That then forced premier Rutte to endure a “no confidence” motion from parliamentarians. In the end, Rutte survived the vote. If a majority had voted against his leadership, his coalition government may have collapsed.

But the deep damage done to the Dutch authorities will not be so easily repaired by Rutte’s survival as premier. What has been exposed this week is a senior member of government recklessly telling bare-faced lies in an attempt to slander Russia, poison international relations, and ratchet up already dangerous geopolitical tensions.

Zijlstra had claimed two years ago, in 2016, that he had personally witnessed Russian leader Vladimir Putin boasting about creating a “greater Russia” which, it is claimed, would incorporate Ukraine, the Baltic states, Belarus and Kazakhstan.

The newly resigned Dutch top diplomat claimed he heard Putin making the remarks while present with others at the Russian leader’s dacha (summer house) back in 2006.

This week, Zijlstra finally came clean and admitted before parliament that he hadn’t in fact been present at the alleged gathering. He still maintains, however, that a confidant who was among the guests at Putin’s dacha informed him of the alleged “greater Russia” plan. But how can we now trust the word of a self-confessed liar?

US Transferred ISIS-ISIL Members to Afghanistan by Helicopter: Russia

  • PressTV Published on Feb 8, 2018
A high-ranking Russian official has accused the U-S military of allowing Daesh terrorists – who have been defeated in Syria and Iraq – to infiltrate Afghanistan. The Russian envoy for Afghanistan says various witness accounts indicate that the terrorists are often transferred to Afghanistan by helicopters. Zamir Kabulov added that because the U-S and NATO fully control the skies over Afghanistan, there is every reason to believe they have a hand in the transfer, or at least refuse to confront such flights. In 2001, the US and its allies invaded Afghanistan under the pretext of ‘war on terror’. Some 17 years on, terrorism is still growing in Afghanistan. The Daesh terrorist group has recently established a foothold in eastern and northern Afghanistan and stepped up its attacks against civilian targets across the country.

Turkey Warns US Troops In Northern Syria May Be Targeted By Its Army

  • Turkey Warns US Troops In Northern Syria May Be Targeted By Its Army
    by Tyler Durden, https://www.zerohedge.com/
Last week we reported  that days Turkey valiantly demanded that US forces vacate military bases in the Syrian district of Manbij, the US predictably refused, and on Monday a top American general said that US troops will not pull out from the northern Syrian city of Manbij, rebuffing Ankara demands to withdraw from the city and risking a potential confrontation between the two NATO allies.

One week later, in the latest dramatic escalation between the two NATO members, Turkey’s Deputy PM has warned that US troops fighting alongside Syrian Kurdish militias in the same uniform may be targeted by the Turkish army due to the difficulty of distinguishing them in the heat of battle, effectively stating that US troops in northern Syria are now “fair game” in the ongoing deadly conflict.

Speaking to CNN Turk on Sunday, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag said if US troops wear “terrorists’ clothes” and find themselves among “terrorists” of the Kurdish YPG forces attacking the Turkish troops, “there is no chance that we will make a distinction at this point.”
