Trump Aides “Scrambled” After He Raised Leaving NATO Altogether “Several Times”

  • Trump Aides “Scrambled” After He Raised Leaving NATO Altogether “Several Times”
    by Tyler Durden, https://www.zerohedge.com/
President Trump has privately told senior administration officials that he wants to withdraw from NATO altogether, finds an explosive New York Times report:

Senior administration officials told The New York Times that several times over the course of 2018, Mr. Trump privately said he wanted to withdraw from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Current and former officials who support the alliance said they feared Mr. Trump could return to his threat as allied military spending continued to lag behind the goals the president had set.

Most of the remarks came surrounding last summer’s contentious NATO summit in Brussels, according to the Times. The 2-day meeting which concluded on July 12 was replete with Trump’s demanding that European countries pull their own weight on defense spending in the 29-nation trans-Atlantic alliance, including what was described at the time as a “vague threat” by the president that the US could actually exit the alliance if the imbalance continues. He told reporters at the time that NATO countries must radically increase defense spending or the US will do our own thing.”

Washington in Panic Mode as Trump Reportedly Mulled Withdrawal From NATO

  • Washington in Panic Mode as Trump Reportedly Mulled Withdrawal From NATO
    by https://sputniknews.com/
Since taking office in 2017, Donald Trump has on a multitude of occasions slammed NATO member states for failing to meet their annual defence spending obligations and insisted on fair burden-sharing.

Over the course of 2018, US President Donald Trump repeatedly expressed a willingness to withdraw from NATO, The New York Times reported, citing current and former senior administration officials.

Although the unnamed sources said that they were not sure if Trump was serious, they allegedly feared that POTUS would return to his threat as other alliance member states failed to boost their military donations to NATO and reach the spending target set by the bloc.

Days ahead of a NATO summit in Brussels last summer, Trump purportedly questioned the alliance’s raison d’être while speaking to senior national security officials, describing it as an exhausting burden on the United States.

    The New York Times
report suggests that Trump complained about Europe’s failure to meet defence spending goals, thus leaving the US to “carry an outsize burden”.

POTUS was allegedly frustrated with the fact that his transatlantic allies would not, on the spot, pledge to donate more. But at another leaders meeting during the same summit, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg praised Washington’s example and suggested that European member states follow suit — Trump was allegedly taken by surprise.

Trump was purportedly annoyed, in particular, with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her country’s military spending of 1 percent of its GDP.

At the time, then-Defence Secretary Jim Mattis and White House National Security Adviser John Bolton struggled to stick to American strategy without mentioning the potential withdrawal that would inevitably undermine Washington’s influence in Europe and embolden Russia, the newspaper wrote.

Erdogan’s said on Monday that, “We [Turkey] cannot accept Bolton’s messages given from Israel” adding that Bolton made a “serious mistake”…a statement that left many U.S. warmonger neocon’s stunned The Duran’s Alex Christoforou and Editor-in-Chief Alexander Mercouris take a quick look at Turkish President Erdogan’s forceful shut down of war hawk John Bolton on Syria. Putin Issues Ominous Warning on Rising Nuclear War Threat

  • Putin Issues Ominous Warning on Rising Nuclear War Threat
    by VLADIMIR ISACHENKOV, https://www.apnews.com/
MOSCOW (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a chilling warning Thursday about the rising threat of a nuclear war, putting the blame squarely on the U.S., which he accused of irresponsibly pulling out of arms control treaties.

Speaking at his annual news conference, Putin warned that “it could lead to the destruction of civilization as a whole and maybe even our planet.” He pointed at Washington’s intention to walk away from the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, or INF, and its reluctance to negotiate the extension of the 2010 New START agreement, which expires in 2021 unless the two countries agree to extend it. “We are witnessing the breakup of the arms control system,” he said.

Moscow and Washington have been at loggerheads over the INF, which bans an entire class of weapons — all nuclear and conventional ground-launched ballistic and cruise missiles of intermediate range. U.S. officials say Washington’s withdrawal from the pact was prompted by Russian violations of the treaty, which Moscow vehemently denies.

Earlier this month NATO, at U.S. request formally declared Russia to be in violation of the INF and demanded that it halt activity that breaches it. The move put the full weight of the alliance behind the U.S., which has given Russia until February to come into compliance or trigger Washington’s withdrawal from the treaty.”

The UK and the US Ramp Up Tensions with Russia Over Ukraine

  • The UK and the US Ramp Up Tensions with Russia Over Ukraine
    by https://www.telesurenglish.net/
The US and the UK are looking to increase funding for navy and to send navy ships to the Ukraine, respectively, as a means to boost the country’s capacity to fight Russia.

On Saturday, the United Kingdom‘s defense ministry deployed a navy warship to Ukraine in order to “send a message” to Russia, while the United States state department is busy trying to channel millions of dollars to Kiev in order to boost their navy’s ability to confront Russia actions which raise the already existing tensions among the Eastern European countries.

The U.K.’s Defense Secretary Gavin Williamson believes sending a navy warship to the Black Sea is a way to support Ukraine against Russia, according to the BBC. This is one of many ships which will be sent to the area to establish a British presence there, stated the defense secretary.

William has put forth a defense paper titled “Mobilizing, Modernizing and Transforming Defense.” In this paper, Russia is attributed to committing acts such as cyber attacks, assassination, disinformation, as well as aiming to “blunt” the strategic advantage of the Western armies.

For the Russia Today media agency, these allegations amount to a portrayal typical of a “common Hollywood action flick where Russia is the main villain,” reminiscent of Cold War propaganda.

The United States government is engaged in its own form of conflict escalation. The state department recently issued a statement saying it will seek Congressional approval to “provide an additional US$10 million in Foreign Military Financing to further build Ukraine’s naval capabilities.”

For its part, the Russian government sent over a dozen SU-27 and SU-30 fighter jets to Crimea.

Tensions have recently been on the rise in the Black Sea because of an incident between Ukrainian warships and Russian patrols at the Kirch strait, in which the Russian navy shot at the vessels to induce them to stop what they alleged where dangerous maneuvers aimed to cause a provocation.

Ukraine to Declare War on Russia Next?

  • Ukraine to Declare War on Russia Next?
    by https://thesaker.is/, 22 Dec 2018
Note by The Saker: Eugenia and the other translators were wondering whether it was worth translating such a demented piece of proposed legislation, but I asked them to go ahead and do it even though I fully agree with them that the author of this text is clearly completely insane and the ideas this draft legislation are the product of sick, hateful and infinitely stupid minds.  But that is precisely the point!  I am personally sick and tired of the western patrons and sponsors of the Euromaidan and of the very notion of a “Ukraine” constantly trying to constantly put some half-way decent make-up on what are the demented, corrupt and, yes, Nazi faces of the ruling Ukronazi junta in Kiev.  The truth is that just like in the cases of Noriega, Saddam Husein, al-Qaeda, the Takfiris in Syria and elsewhere, the West is yet again allied with, and protector of, an ugly clique of hateful and demented people.  This resolution is a very good example of the kind of ideas which this AngloZionist ruling gang of thugs have advocated for many decades (beginning with the hate-saturated propaganda of  RFE/RL, VOA, BBC, DW and the rest of them), then inside the Ukraine since even before 1991 and now from the Ukie Rada and Presidency.  When we post this text, we are simply holding up a mirror to the collective face of the AngloZionists but, as we say in Russian, don’t blame the mirror if your face looks crooked!   This translation is important because it shows what kind of demented monsters the collective West has lovingly nurtured for decades.  It is also important because it is a direct attack on Poroshenko from the Nazi-crazies in the Rada, folks who might well one day replace him as the President of the “Independent Euro-compatible the Ukraine”.  When that happens, at least they won’t be quite able to say “we did not know”.  Yes, you did know, you have known for decades, and at the end of the day, this resolution is not the product of the demented mind of one crazy Ukie, but a pure product of the rabid russophobia of the collective West.  And for that I say: shame on you!
    The Saker

    Translation by Eugenia
On December 21st just four days after Sergei Lavrov stated that Russia will not wage war against Ukraine, three days after Speaker A.Parubiy met US Special Representative K.Volker to discuss “recent Russian aggression” and “further support of Ukraine by United States of America,” and a day after A.Parubiy named the UK to be mightiest balancing military force in the Black Sea, Vitaly Kupriy, a member of the Ukrainian Rada, and an associate of Israeli oligarch Igor Kolomoisky, submitted a draft resolution No. 9442 titled “Draft Resolution on the appeal of the Supreme (Verkhovna) Rada of Ukraine to the President of Ukraine about declaration of war, termination of diplomatic relations and the cessation of transport connections with the Russian Federation.

The text of the proposed resolution is still absent on the official website, but the Ukrainian lawmaker graciously posted it on his official FaceBook page, accompanied by a memorandum titled: Down with usurpation!

Friday, December 21st, was Rada’s last day in section before winter recess. It will be back on January 5th, 2019.

The Warnings of Escalation in the Russia-Ukraine Standoff: “Christmas Surprise?” — Alexander Vershbow, Ex NATO Deputy Secretary General

  • The Warnings of Escalation in the Russia-Ukraine Standoff: “Christmas Surprise?” — Alexander Vershbow, Ex NATO Deputy Secretary General
    by , https://www.axios.com/
Vladimir Putin declared Thursday that the crisis in relations with Ukraine will continue “as long as Russophobes remain in the corridors of power in Kiev.” Meanwhile, in Kiev, a brawl broke out in parliament over a poster accusing a Ukrainian politician of serving as “Putin’s agent.”

    The big picture:
Tensions between Russia and Ukraine are still simmering 25 days after Russia intercepted, fired on and seized three Ukrainian naval vessels off of Crimea, taking 24 sailors prisoner in the process. Both sides continue to accuse the other of provocations that could lead to war.

Putin insisted that Russia will hold the sailors until they face trial. In Ukraine, a top national security official said Kiev has “no choice” but to send warships into the Sea of Azov — a move that could spark another confrontation.

    * “Just because it’s been quiet for a couple weeks doesn’t mean we won’t have a Christmas surprise,” Alexander Vershbow, a former NATO Deputy Secretary General and U.S. ambassador to Russia now at the Atlantic Council, tells me. “The propaganda coming out of the Russians is at least preparing the ground for something new.”

    * Vershbow says there are similarities between what’s happening in Ukraine today and the “creeping annexation” by Moscow that preceded the 2008 war in Georgia. He says the lack of concrete actions from the U.S. and Europe after last month’s flare-up only make further aggression more likely.

    * “They’ve essentially annexed the Kerch Strait,” Vershbow says of the waters separating Crimea and Russia, where the confrontation took place, “and the West swallowed it.”

    Where things stand…
    * Kurt Volker, the U.S. special envoy for Ukraine, says the push for more U.S. sanctions on Moscow is “gaining some traction.” The EU extended existing sanctions, but there’s no consensus on further steps.

Christmas Eve Surprise? Bulgarian Officer Claims Ukraine-Russia War Starts December 24th

  • The word is that the Ukraine provocation will be ignited 24/25 Dec 2018. Whether the Russians will respond in all out war remains to be seen. It is the western Illuminati who is desperate to ignite WW3. The Russians can pick and choose when they will fight WW3. Desperate people will make mistakes which the Russians will respond, IMO, in overwhelming force. The question is when and where? WW3 may not be next week.

US Wants to Stir Up War Between Russia and Ukraine – Russian Diplomat

  • US Wants to Stir Up War Between Russia and Ukraine – Russian Diplomat
    by http://tass.com/
According to Russia’s Deputy UN Representative Dmitry Polyansky, “Washington is trying not only to push the two fraternal peoples against each other, but also to unleash a full-scale war between them”

UNITED NATIONS, December 18. /TASS/. The United States is trying to stir up a full-scale war between fraternal Russian and Ukrainian peoples, according to Russia’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Dmitry Polyansky.

“Instead of reasoning with the ‘Maidan’ regime, forcing it to hear the voice of the people, it is supplied with weapons and all kinds of support, including military, is demonstrated,” the diplomat said, speaking at the UN General Assembly.

“Such actions suggest that Washington is trying not only to push the two fraternal peoples against each other, but also to unleash a full-scale war between them,” Polyansky noted.

The United Nations General Assembly earlier adopted the resolution proposed by Ukraine on “militarization problem” of Crimea and the waters of the Azov and Black Sea. 66 countries supported the document, 19 were against it, 72 – abstained.

The resolution stated that presence of the Russian military in Crimea contradicts the national sovereignty, political independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine. The document also condemns Russia because of constructing a bridge across the Kerch Strait. At the same time, the General Assembly rejected amendments proposed by Iran and Syria, aimed at balancing the document and containing references to the Minsk agreements.

In the morning of November 25, three ships from the Ukrainian Navy – the Berdyansk, the Nikopol and the Yany Kapu – illegally crossed Russia’s border. They ignored legitimate demands to stop issued by vessels belonging to the FSB Border Service and the Black Sea Fleet and continued maneuvering dangerously. In order to stop the Ukrainian ships, weapons were used. A criminal investigation has been opened into the border incident.

Russia Deploys 10 Fighter Jets in Crimea

  • PressTV Published on Dec 17, 2018
Moscow says it’s deploying ten fighter jets to Crimea as tension is rising between Russia and Ukraine. The Russian defense ministry said the fighter jets will be permanently stationed in the Belbek air base in Crimea. It comes after Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov accused Kiev of preparing an armed provocation near the borders of Crimea before the end of the year. Tensions between the two countries flared in November after Russia seized three Ukrainian naval ships that had illegally entered the Russian waters, off the coast of the Crimean peninsula. Kiev said Moscow blocked the vessels from passing into the Sea of Azov through the Kerch Strait. Tensions have been high around the Black Sea since Crimea rejoined Russia following a referendum in 2014.

Latest Odds of a Shooting War Between NATO and Russia

WW3 is near?

  • Latest Odds of a Shooting War Between NATO and Russia
    by https://consortiumnews.com/
Hungarian scholar George Szamuely tells Ann Garrison that he sees a 70 percent chance of combat between NATO and Russia following the incident in the Kerch Strait and that it is being fueled by Russia-gate.

    An Interview with George Szamuely
by Ann Garrison, Special to Consortium News
George Szamuely is a Hungarian-born scholar and Senior Research Fellow at London’s Global Policy Institute. He lives in New York City. I spoke to him about escalating hostilities on Russia’s Ukrainian and Black Sea borders and about Exercise Trident Juncture, NATO’s massive military exercise on Russian borders which ended just as the latest hostilities began.

    Ann Garrison:
George, the hostilities between Ukraine, NATO, and Russia continue to escalate in the Sea of Azov, the Kerch Strait, and the Black Sea. What do you think the latest odds of a shooting war between NATO and Russia are, if one hasn’t started by the time this is published?

    George Szamuely:
Several weeks ago, when we first talked about this, I said 60 percent. Now I’d say, maybe 70 percent. The problem is that Trump seems determined to be the anti-Obama. Obama, in Trump’s telling, “allowed” Russia to take Crimea and to “invade” Ukraine. Therefore, it will be up to Trump to reverse this. Just as he, Trump, reversed Obama’s policy on Iran by walking away from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, otherwise known as the Iran nuclear deal. So expect ever-increasing US involvement in Ukraine.

    AG:
NATO’s Supreme Commander US General Curtis M. Scaparrotti is reported to have been on the phone with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko “offering his full support.” Thoughts on that?

Ukraine Wants Nuclear Weapons: Will the West Bow to the Regime in Kiev?

  • Ukraine Wants Nuclear Weapons: Will the West Bow to the Regime in Kiev?
    by FEDERICO PIERACCINI, https://www.strategic-culture.org/
Efforts to prevent nuclear proliferation are one of the few issues on which the great powers agree, intending to continue to limit the spread of nuclear weapons and to prevent new entrants into the exclusive nuclear club.

The former Ukrainian envoy to NATO, Major General Petro Garashchuk, recently stated in an interview with Obozrevatel TV:

“I’ll say it once more. We have the ability to develop and produce our own nuclear weapons, currently available in the world, such as the one that was built in the former USSR and which is now in independent Ukraine, located in the city of Dnipro (former Dnipropetrovsk) that can produce these kinds of intercontinental ballistic missiles. Neither the United States, nor Russia, nor China have produced a missile named Satan … At the same time, Ukraine does not have to worry about international sanctions when creating these nuclear weapons.”

The issue of nuclear weapons has always united the great powers, especially following the signing of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). The decision to reduce the number of nuclear weapons towards the end of the Cold War went hand in hand with the need to prevent the spread of such weapons of mass destruction to other countries in the best interests of humanity. During the final stages of the Cold War, the scientific community expended great effort on impressing upon the American and Soviet leadership how a limited nuclear exchange would wipe out humanity. Moscow and Washington thus began START (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty) negotiations to reduce the risk of a nuclear winter. Following the dissolution of the USSR, the Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances persuaded Ukraine to relinquish its nuclear weapons and accede to the NPT in exchange for security assurances from its signatories.

Ukraine has in recent years begun entertaining the possibility of returning to the nuclear fold, especially in light of North Korea’s recent actions. Kim Jong-un’s lesson seems to be that a nuclear deterrent remains the only way of guaranteeing complete protection against a regional hegemon. The situation in Ukraine, however, differs from that of North Korea, including in terms of alliances and power relations. Kiev’s government came into power as a result of a coup d’etat carried out by extremist nationalist elements who seek their inspiration from Nazi collaborator Stepan Bandera. The long arm of NATO has always been deeply involved in the dark machinations that led to Poroshenko’s ascendency to the Ukrainian presidency. From a geopolitical point of view, NATO’s operation in Ukraine (instigating a civil war in the wake of a coup) follows in the footsteps of what happened in Georgia. NATO tends to organize countries with existing anti-Russia sentiments to channel their Russophobia into concrete actions that aim to undermine Moscow. The war in the Donbass is a prime example.

Why Russia Won’t Invade the Ukraine, the Baltic Statelets or Anybody Else

  • Why Russia Won’t Invade the Ukraine, the Baltic Statelets or Anybody Else
    by , http://www.unz.com/
The AngloZionist propaganda machine is constantly warning us that Russia is about to invade some country. The list of candidates for invasion is long and ranges from Norway to the Ukraine and includes the Baltic statelets, Poland and even countries further West. Of course, we are also told that NATO and the US are here to prevent that. Well, thank God for them, right?

But what is conspicuously missing from this narrative is a discussion of the possible Russian motives for such a military move. Typically, we are merely told that Russia has broken the European post-Cold War order and borders by “annexing” Crimea and by sending military forces into the Donbass. Anybody with an IQ at room temperature or above by now realizes that both of these claims are total bunk. The ones who indeed broke the post-Cold War international order and borders were the NATO member states when they used military force, in complete illegality, to break-up Yugoslavia. As for the people of Crimea, they had the opportunity to vote about their future in a referendum, very much unlike the inhabitants of Kosovo which had no such opportunity. As for the 08.08.08 war, even the Europeans who eventually, and very reluctantly, agreed that it was, in fact, Saakashvili who started this conflict, not Russia.

But let’s set all this aside and assume that the Russian leaders would not hesitate to use military force again if it was to their advantage. Let’s assume that, yes, the Russians are up to no good and that they might well try to bite-off some other piece of land somewhere in Europe.

Such an assumption would immediately raise a crucial question: why would the Russians want to do that?
