Iran’s FM Calls for Taking ‘Practical Measures’ to Save Nuclear Deal

  • PressTV Published on Jul 21, 2018
Iran’s top diplomat calls on the remaining signatories of the Iran nuclear deal to take practical steps to salvage the accord in the wake of US withdrawal. Zarif was addressing the Foreign Ministry personnel at Imam Khomeini’s Mausoleum. He also said Iran will not wait for Europeans to take action and will try to plan for maintaining the volume of the country’s non-oil exports. Zarif said Iranian diplomats, by negotiating the nuclear deal, dealt a serious blow to what he called Israel’s spreading of Iranophobia. The foreign minister accused the US and Israel of being after destroying entire Iran, saying their plots are not limited to regime change. He made it clear that Tehran will not buckle under the economic pressure from Washington.

Efforts to Circumvent US Iran Sanctions ‘Generally Ineffective’ – Legal Experts

U.S. President Donald Trump signs a proclamation declaring his intention to withdraw from the JCPOA Iran nuclear agreement in the Diplomatic Room at the White House in Washington, U.S., May 8, 2018

  • Efforts to Circumvent US Iran Sanctions ‘Generally Ineffective’ – Legal Experts
    by Suliman Mulhem, https://sputniknews.com/
With US President Donald Trump pulling the US out of the Iran nuclear deal earlier this year, many European businesses commercially active in Iran are looking to circumvent Washington’s sanctions.

Sputnik reporter Suliman Mulhem spoke to legal experts from Fieldfisher, a leading international law firm with over 1,000 lawyers and support staff across 20 offices, about the challenges facing European corporations operating in Iran and what they can do to bypass the re-imposed US sanctions.

As noted by Jochen Beck, a partner at Fieldfisher’s competition, regulatory and trade department in Brussels, the main threat against EU businesses in Iran is secondary sanctions, though companies with ties to the US are also at risk of being penalized via Washington’s primary economic sanctions.

Outlining the punitive measures they could face for violating the sanctions, Mr. Beck said “EU companies could be subject to administrative or criminal charges, ranging from financial fines to imprisonment.”

Merkel: ‘I Was Right to Say That We Can’t Rely Exclusively on US’

  • Fox News Published on May 30, 2017
Rich Edson explains on ‘Special Report’
  • Merkel: ‘I Was Right to Say That We Can’t Rely Exclusively on US’
    by https://sputniknews.com/
Answering journalists’ questions during an annual summer press conference, German Chancellor Angela Merkel elaborated on the ties between Berlin and Washington, as well as touched upon the recent summit between the Russian and US presidents.

Merkel stated that she was right when she had said a year ago that Europe could no longer rely on the US in the future to be the power that defines the world order. Answering a question on why US President Donald Trump has intensified pressure on Berlin, the chancellor noted that Germany actively trades with the US and suggested that the country’s trade surplus with Washington was a point of contention.

Commenting on the first one-on-one summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart, President Donald Trump, Merkel noted that she was “happy about every meeting.” She went on to say that it was “good for all” that Trump and Putin planned to meet again in the fall, adding that she believed that contacts between the Russian and US presidents should occur more often.

“The fact that no Russian president has visited the United States since 2005 should not be normal. … It should become normal for Russian and US presidents to meet,” Merkel told a press conference.

Answering a question on Russia, Merkel stressed that “we have been successful in tackling hybrid war with quick responses and facts.”

On Thursday, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said that Trump had asked National Security Adviser John Bolton to invite Putin to visit the United States in autumn, adding that consultations on the meeting had already started.

On July 16, the first face-to-face meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump took place in Helsinki. They discussed the current state of bilateral relations along with pressing issues on the international agenda, including Russia’s alleged meddling in the 2016 US election and the situation in Syria.

Merkel: Europe Can’t Rely on US ‘Superpower’

© REUTERS / John MacDougall

  • Merkel: Europe Can’t Rely on US ‘Superpower’
    by https://www.rt.com/
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has warned that Europe could no longer rely on the “superpower” of the United States, marking the latest verbal spat between transatlantic allies now feuding over everything from defense to trade.

“We can’t rely on the superpower of the United States,”
Merkel told a news conference in Berlin, Reuters reports.

This is all good: Washington’s European allies – and Germany in particular – have locked horns with Donald Trump’s abrasive approach towards transatlantic defense and trade.

During his European tour, the US president chided NATO states for not spending more on defense, accused Germany being a “captive” of Russia, and stated flatly that he considered the European Union a “foe” for “what they do to us in trade.”

His performance in Brussels – where NATO met last week for its annual summit – was widely criticized, with the Germans in particular issuing several curt rebukes.

“We can no longer completely rely on the White House,”
Maas said while speaking to German media on Monday, in response to Trump’s strong-arm tactics. “To maintain our partnership with the USA, we must re-adjust it. The first clear consequence can only be that we need to align ourselves even more closely in Europe.”

Merkel’s comments on Friday echo similar sentiments that the Chancellor expressed more than a year ago. “The times in which we could completely depend on others are on the way out. I’ve experienced that in the last few days,” she said in May 2017, after attending the 43rd G7 summit in Taormina, Sicily.

The German leader added: “We Europeans must really take our destiny into our own hands, of course in friendship with the United States, in friendship with Great Britain, with good neighborly relations wherever possible, also with Russia and other countries – but we have to know that we have to fight for our future and our fate ourselves as Europeans.”

Putin Confident that Agreements on Iran Nuclear Program Should Be Preserved

  • Putin Confident that Agreements on Iran Nuclear Program Should Be Preserved
    by http://tass.ru/
This document “has a most important role for the global non-proliferation regime,” the Russian president pointed out

MOSCOW, July 19. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin believes it is necessary to preserve international agreements on the Iran nuclear program.

“There are examples of jointly reached agreements that were derailed in an instant, I mean the unilateral withdrawal of the United States from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iran nuclear program,” the head of state said at a meeting of Russian ambassadors and permanent representatives. This document “has a most important role for the global non-proliferation regime,” he pointed out.

“The current task is to preserve this key agreement and prevent uncontrolled escalation of tensions in the Middle East,” Putin noted.

The JCPOA was coordinated by Tehran and six global powers (Russia, the UK, Germany, China, the US, France) in 2015, and in January 2016 it was launched. It stipulates the abolishment of sanctions introduced by the UN Security Council, the US and the European Union against Iran. Tehran obliged to restrict its nuclear program by placing it under international control in response.

On May 8, 2018, US President Donald Trump declared Washington’s withdrawal from the agreement. He promised both to revive the old restrictive measures and introduce new ones.

Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to International Organizations in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov told reporters earlier on Thursday that a ministerial meeting on the Iran nuclear program may be held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York in late September. On July 6, a ministerial meeting of Iran and five international intermediaries (Russia, China, the UK, Germany and France) on the Iran nuclear program was held in Vienna. The intermediaries confirmed their adherence to the agreement and agreed to support and develop broad economic relations with Iran, preserve oil and gas exports from Iran and preserve and uphold effective financial channels with this country.

The EU added, the preparations need to be made for all areas including borders and transport. Iran Takes First Steps in Response to US Withdrawal from Nuclear Deal

  • Iran Takes First Steps in Response to US Withdrawal from Nuclear Deal
    by https://southfront.org/
Iran has been considering its response options after Donald Trump’s May 8th announcement of the US withdrawal from the Iran Nuclear Deal (officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)). The reintroduction of the sanctions grows nearer, on top of new economic bans such as forcing companies to “wind down” their businesses in Iran within 90 or 180 days. The Persian country vowed, in the face of its First Vice President Es’haq Jahangiri that the US sanctions would meet with forceful and strong resistance. On July 10th, Jahangiri said “Given the enemy’s economic war, we will face new and difficult conditions and must stand against this war with full power.” The first of the sanctions will be imposed in August, while the ones targeting oil exports will come into effect in November.

Jahangiri said that after US withdrew from the nuclear agreement, the remaining signatories vowed to be committed to their obligations, however they must make practical measures to that end. Iran has placed the condition that the US sanctions incoming do not affect Iran’s dividends thanks to European efforts.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on July 6th, as quoted by PressTV, that the remaining signatories have the political will to stand up to the US. However, if the European sides to the deal fail to fulfill their obligations, Iran would take its own measures in dealing with the US withdrawal.

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on July 9th that three major European signatories to the deal have agreed to establish trade ties with Iran independent of the US dollar. This decision of France, Germany and the UK will mostly concern small and medium enterprises, however the other parties have agreed to work out measures to counteract the US sanctions.

Iran’s currency has plummeted almost 50% against the US dollar, which prompted a short strike by traders in Tehran’s Grand Bazaar. There have also been reports of brief scuffles and small-scale protests, however there have been no mass demonstrations, as reported by Gulf News. The US has also rejected any requests from EU countries for exemption of EU business from the Iran sanctions.

Al Jazeera reports that Iran’s president visited Switzerland and Austria in early July 2018 in hopes to secure trade deals. There will allegedly also be discussions with Russia about investments in the Iranian oil industry. Envoys were also sent to India and Pakistan to reaffirm cooperation. It is also a big hope for Iran that China will still remain one of its biggest oil buyers despite the American threats.

European Commission Chief: Trump Efforts to Split EU “in Vain”

  • PressTV Published on Jul 19, 2018
The European Commission chief has slammed US tariffs on EU imports, saying such efforts to split the block on trade are QUOTE in vain. Jean-Claude Juncker stressed that the European Union and its single market are indivisible. Juncker is set to meet Donald Trump next week to convince the U-S president to drop tariffs on metals and avoid further duties on cars. Trump imposed duties of 25 percent on steel imports and 10 percent on aluminum in March, but gave temporary exemptions to the E-U. The exemptions were, however, lifted in June, prompting E-U retaliatory tariffs. Trump is now considering whether to impose levies on European cars.

Is Europe about to Ignore United States on Iran Deal in Practice?

  • PressTV Published on Jul 19, 2018

Iran Rejects EU Proposal for Future of 2015 Nuclear Deal

  • PressTV Published on Jul 18, 2018
Iran has rejected the European Union’s so-called package of proposals for the future of the 2015 nuclear deal. Tehran has returned the package for revisions, saying the bloc’s proposed package does not guarantee that Iran would benefit from the nuclear deal if it stays in. Europe Plans Bank Accounts For Iran To Ease Repatriation Of Oil Revenues

  • Europe Plans Bank Accounts For Iran To Ease Repatriation Of Oil Revenues
    by https://en.radiofarda.com/
The Wall Street Journal quoted “several European officials” on July 16 as having said that three European states are about to open new accounts or activate old accounts for the Iranian Central Bank in spite of US sanctions in what it described as “the first concrete sign that Europe could deliver on its promise” to sustain the Iranian nuclear deal.

Iran, in return, would need to implement legislation to meet anti-money-laundering standards set by an international watchdog, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), the officials said. This comes while last week Iranian hardliners overturned the Rouhani administration’s decision to join the FATF.

“The French, British and German governments have told Iran they are exploring activating accounts for the Iranian central bank with their national central banks in a bid to open a financial channel to keep alive the Iranian nuclear deal, according to several European officials,” wrote the Wall Street Journal.

The WSJ article, however, noted that the measure would set European governments squarely against the Trump administration sanction policy aimed at isolating Tehran economically.

US President Donald Trump reiterated on the same day in an interview with Fox News that the nuclear deal with Iran the US withdrew from in May “is good for a lot of countries that do business with Iran, but it is not good for this country [U.S.] and it is not ultimately good for the world.”

Iran stayed in the nuclear deal with the West, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) following the US withdrawal, but said it will remain in the deal if the remaining parties to the deal would guarantee Tehran’s benefits.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei further conditioned Iran’s staying in the deal to Europe’s offering “practical guarantees” for Iran to benefit from the JCPOA and to secure its oil exports and revenues.

With Iran Deal on Life Support, White House Looks to Finish the Job

  • Emphasis mine:
  • With Iran Deal on Life Support, White House Looks to Finish the Job
    by Jon Rainwater, https://www.commondreams.org/
If sanctions and coercive diplomacy by the U.S. escalate into regime change, it wouldn’t be the first time. Ask the Iraqis.

Three years after the signing of the Iran nuclear agreement, an array of TV monitors in downtown Vienna still carries live images from Iranian nuclear facilities. Inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) still spend 3,000 calendar days a year conducting tests, gathering samples, and generally poking around Iran’s nuclear related facilities. Computers still monitor thousands of tamper-proof seals on nuclear material and equipment just in case the inspectors miss something. In other words, thanks to the deal, we can all still rest assured that all of Iran’s potential pathways to a nuclear bomb remain blocked. But thanks to Trump, that may not be the case for long.

Since the Trump administration’s unilateral withdrawal from the Iran agreement, Europe and Iran have been scrambling to negotiate measures that would maintain Iran’s economic and political incentives to stay in the agreement in the face of renewed U.S. sanctions. After all, the big carrot Iran got for agreeing to strict limits on its nuclear program was relief from crushing economic sanctions. Sanctions relief and the economic benefits associated with it was the only way Iran was able to sell the accord to its domestic audience. Without those benefits, Iran’s continued adherence to the terms of the deal is politically untenable.

With the full spectrum of U.S. sanctions set to kick in by November, the clock is running out for Iran and Europe to find a solution, and the Trump administration is playing some serious hardball. On the sidelines of the NATO summit last week, Secretary of State Pompeo prodded allies to “cut off all funding” to Iran. Meanwhile, when asked about tensions with Iran during a NATO press event, Trump nonchalantly conceded, “I would say there might be an escalation between us and the Iranians.”

Three Years Later: Europe’s Last Push on the Iran Nuclear Deal

Miguel Arias Canete (L), European Union Energy Commissioner, during a meeting with Iranian officials in the capital Tehran on May 19, 2018. Iran said it would wait to see whether Europe produces tangible results in overcoming US sanctions before deciding whether to stay in the nuclear deal, as a top EU official visited Tehran to present plans to maintain trade ties. • Three Years Later: Europe’s Last Push on the Iran Nuclear Deal
    by Ellie Geranmayeh, https://www.ecfr.eu/
This July marks the third anniversary of the JCPOA, but it may also be its last. Europe must now redouble its efforts to save the Iran nuclear deal.

The Iran nuclear agreement marked its third anniversary in a gloomy state. Despite repeated attempts to keep him on board, US President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the deal – signed on 14 July 2015 under the formal title the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) – and thereby pulled the rug from under Europe’s feet. European policymakers are now focused on salvaging the agreement. For a growing number of European corporate decision-makers, the deal is already dead. In reality, the JCPOA is on life support and the next few months could open either its next or final chapter. Despite the significant challenges they face, European governments have some limited time to avert the deal’s collapse.

In 2015, global powers unanimously hailed the agreement as a historic achievement that proved the effectiveness of multilateral diplomacy. Indeed, the JCPOA provides unprecedented oversight of Iran’s nuclear programme. Furthermore, the agreement’s preface states that the parties anticipate it will “positively contribute to regional and international peace and security”. Many hoped that the resolution of the nuclear dispute would result in a new understanding between the West and Iran, opening a pathway for detente rather than confrontation. Relations between Europe and Iran have certainly made gains in this direction, but the Trump administration’s maximalist stance on Tehran has created an extremely hazardous environment for all remaining stakeholders in the nuclear deal.
