Turkey Has No Replacement for Oil, Gas Imports from Iran

  • PressTV Published on Jul 24, 2018
Turkey’s foreign minister says his country disagrees with US anti-Iran sanctions and does not have to implement them. Mevlut Chavushoglu says Turkey has no replacement for its oil and gas imports from Iran. The top Turkish diplomat says Ankara openly communicated its stance to the US delegation that visited Turkey last week. In May, Washington withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran and pledged to re-impose sanctions on Tehran. The US later asked other countries to cut to zero all oil imports from Iran.

Tweet-Down to the Apocalypse? US Recklessness on Iran Could Trigger ‘Mother of All Wars’

  • Tweet-Down to the Apocalypse? US Recklessness on Iran Could Trigger ‘Mother of All Wars’
    by https://www.rt.com/
Once again, US foreign diplomacy has boiled down to a series of inflammatory comments via social media, with the US leader this time threatening Iran with “consequences” as talk of sanctions and blockades heats up.

Late on Sunday night, Donald Trump, supreme commander-in-chief of his Twitter feed, launched into the void of darkness a screaming, all-caps invective addressed to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani:

https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1021234525626609666

  • Ah yes, nothing like the sweet sound of calm and composed chatter between bickering state leaders – especially at a time when the world is straddling a nuclear-weapon keg the size of Mount Everest.

Trump’s latest over-the-top outburst came in response to a statement by Rouhani, who just the day before was quoted as saying: “The Americans must understand… that peace with Iran is the mother of all peace, and war with Iran is the mother of all wars.”

Rouhani, a moderate, progressive-minded politician who enjoys robust support at home, as well as respect on the international stage, went on to say that the Islamic Republic “will certainly defeat America” because ongoing threats against the Iranian people will “only serve to unite them.”

Considered in its entirety, the comment sounds less like a “threat” aimed at the United States, as Donald Trump seems to have interpreted it, and more of a reminder as to what a full-blown military conflict between the US and Iran – a showdown that would pull other serious players into the fray – would look like. Indeed, in the event of such a scenario, the world should expect nothing short of World War III, or the war to end all wars, at least for a very long time. That is why we need to hear more such “threats,” not less, if the human race is to avoid a global conflagration that could wipe out life on the planet as we know it. But I digress.

Olmert Says Netanyahu Has No Plan for Gaza Strip Beyond Military Strikes

  • Olmert Says Netanyahu Has No Plan for Gaza Strip Beyond Military Strikes
    by GIL HOFFMAN, https://www.jpost.com/
Olmert said the government has no organized plan for the Gaza Strip beyond military strikes, which he said would not accomplish anything.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s handling of the Gaza Strip faced criticism over the weekend from former prime minister Ehud Olmert and Knesset members from parties in the opposition. Speaking to Channel 10, Olmert said the government has no organized plan for the Gaza Strip beyond military strikes that he said would not accomplish anything.

“Military strikes will not change the situation, will have no impact and will not help in any way,” Olmert said. “The result of a military operation would be many Israeli and Palestinian deaths. At the end of the operation, after a month or two and many rockets fired at Israeli communities, everything would remain the same.”

Olmert, who initiated Operation Cast Lead in the Gaza Strip in 2008, complained that Netanyahu criticized him at the time for not being tough enough on Hamas, but now “is not doing anything” in a similar situation.

The Likud responded that “Olmert, who competes with Ehud Barak for the title of Israel’s worst prime minister, was one of the leaders of the Gaza Strip disengagement that gave Gaza to Hamas and made it into a base for terror that threatens the entire country.” Olmert said he was still glad Israel withdrew from the Gaza Strip.

Zionist Union MK Amir Peretz, who was Olmert’s defense minister, backed him up, saying, “The time has come for the Israeli government to present a new strategic plan that could change the reality between Israel and Gaza.” Zionist Union MK Omer Bar Lev, who commanded the IDF’s General Staff Reconnaissance Unit Sayeret Matkal, warned there could soon be a war neither side wants.

The move to cashless is not new. Bankers have been nudging us in that direction since the 1920’s. It’s just that technology is finally catching up with the dream. But they want it to be YOUR choice. Central bankers know the debt and leverage build up in the global financial system since 2008. They know the next financial crisis will be much bigger than the last…they all are. They know that explosion will be a black hole event sucking up any wealth held in the system. Since the crisis global central bankers have been loading up on gold, the primary currency metal. Even the Bank for International Settlements, the central bankers central bank, shows commodity money (gold and silver) as the largest form of money that is “widely accessible” and “peer-to-peer” in their money flower that is OUTSIDE of their control. So where can you go to protect your wealth, privacy and independence? Physical gold and silver…real money. It’s certainly the largest part of my money flower too. And if you want to know what to actually DO about all of this, that’s what we specialize in. How do you protect your wealth for the next collapse? Yes Gold and Silver, but what types? What strategy? And what long term plan? If you’re asking these questions you’re already ahead of the game. We’d love to assist you as it is our mission to safeguard you from the inevitable downfall of the dollar.

Israel Shoots Down Syrian Fighter Jet

  • Israel Shoots Down Syrian Fighter Jet
    by Tyler Durden, https://www.zerohedge.com/
Israel has shot down a Syrian fighter jet that penetrated Israeli airspace on Tuesday, the Israeli army said.  According to the IDF spokesperson, the Russian-made Sukhoi was under surveillance when it entered some two kilometers into Israeli airspace and was shot down by two Patriot missiles.

Earlier, Israel’s missile defense systems were activated as sirens went off in Israeli communities across the Golan Heights, near the Syria border Haaretz reported. Residents in northern Israel reported seeing interceptor missiles being fired from the Safed area, and that explosions were heard.

On Monday, Israel used its David’s Sling missile-defense system operationally for the first time, firing at two Syrian surface-to-surface missiles. An initial army investigation found that the system identified the two Russian-made SS-21 missiles, calculating that they were likely to land south of Lake Kinneret. An Israeli lieutenant colonel made the decision to use the system.

The investigators found that one of the missiles fired Monday changed course in flight and was expected to fall in Syria. One interceptor missile was therefore ordered to self-destruct. Israel also launched an interceptor missile at the second Syrian rocket, but it is unclear if it hit its target.

Israeli Military Fires 2 Interceptor Missiles at Syrian Sukhoi Warplane

Israeli soldiers walk near an Israeli Irone Dome defence system (L), a surface-to-air missile (SAM) system, the MIM-104 Patriot (C), and an anti-ballistic missile the Arrow 3 (R) during Juniper Cobra’s joint exercise press briefing at Hatzor Israeli Air Force Base in central Israel, on February 25, 2016. Juniper Cobra, is held every two years where Israel and the United States train their militaries together to prepare against possible ballistic missile attacks, as well as allowing the armies to learn to better work together.

Israel has fired interceptor missiles at a Syrian Sukhoi warplane, the IDF said in a statement, adding that the aircraft had penetrated Israeli-controlled airspace.

“Two Patriot missiles were launched at a Sukhoi fighter plane. The plane was under [Israeli] surveillance, it penetrated about two kilometers into Israeli territory and was intercepted,”
the Israel Defense Forces wrote on Twitter.

Israeli Army Radio stated that the plane was shot down over the Golan Heights, but may have crashed on the Syrian-held side of the frontier, Reuters reports.

Meanwhile, local residents in northern Israel told Haaretz that they saw interceptor missiles being fired from the area of Safed city.

According to Syrian state news agency Sana, the aircraft was conducting raids in Syrian airspace when it was intercepted by Israeli forces. “The Israeli enemy confirms its support for the armed terrorist groups and targets one of our warplanes, which was striking their groups in the area of Saida on the edge of the Yarmouk Valley in Syrian airspace,” Sana reported, citing an unnamed military source.

Earlier in July, Israel struck Syrian Army positions near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, in what the IDF called a retaliation for an earlier drone infiltration. Noting that the Israeli military is prepared for many different scenarios, the army stressed that it holds the Syrian government “accountable for the actions carried out in its territory and warns it from further action against Israeli forces.”

Germany’s Bloody Secret: Politicians & Arms Producers Cozy Up, Sell Weapons to Anyone

  • Germany’s Bloody Secret: Politicians & Arms Producers Cozy Up, Sell Weapons to Anyone
    by https://www.rt.com/
Despite having one of the toughest gun export laws in the world, Germany enjoys a comfy place among the top weapon exporters. How is that possible? A newly released Redfish documentary has some of the answers.

“The laws are very strict and the practice is very-very leisure and very easy. Everyone was wondering how could it be that Germany has one of the strictest laws and always, depending on the ranking, is number three, in small arms is even number two of the biggest world arms trades and weapon producers? So, where’s the gap?”
lawyer Holger Rothbauer told the Germany-based investigative journalism team Redfish.

Rothbauer represents a whistleblower who worked with Heckler & Koch and spilled the beans on shady arms deals the company has made. Back in 2009, he reached Jürgen Grässlin, a German publicist and peace activist who has been waging his own war on the silent arms sales for years. This May, the case based on the whistleblower’s revelations made it to court, with six former H&K employees in the dock.

EU Parliament Study: Central Bank Digital Currencies ‘Will Reshape Competition’ in Crypto Market

  • EU Parliament Study: Central Bank Digital Currencies ‘Will Reshape Competition’ in Crypto Market
    by Molly Jane Zuckerman, https://cointelegraph.com/
A study on issues of competition in fintech, commissioned by the European Parliament Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON), was published July 20. It found that central bank-issued digital currencies could be a “remedy” for a lack of competition policy in the crypto sector:

“The arrival of permissioned cryptocurrencies promoted by banks, even by central banks, will reshape the current competition level in the cryptocurrency market, broadening the number of competitors.”

The study mentions cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC) as “technological and operational paradigms that are a source of disruption for the entire sector, including monetary policy and financial stability.” Other “disruptive and innovative applications” of new technologies include “AI, cloud computing, biometrics, digital identity, blockchain, cybersecurity, RegTech, internet of things (IoT), augmented reality.”

Private digital currencies are defined separately from central bank-issued digital currencies (CBDC), noting that the CBDCs differ by being based on a “conventional bilateral settlement with a trusted central party.”

According to the study, since closed cryptocurrency systems require a supervisory authority, central banks could be considering using “permissioned cryptocurrency systems” to “complement or substitute” the currencies already used.

The study claims that CBDCs “will reshape the current competition level in the inter-cryptocurrency market” by adding to the pool of competitors:

Europe Can’t Rely On The US To Maintain World Order, Merkel Warns

  • Europe Can’t Rely On The US To Maintain World Order, Merkel Warns
    by Tyler Durden, https://www.zerohedge.com/
Having been called a “foe” by President Trump last week, German Chancellor Angela Merkel confirmed that she was right to say a year ago that Europe could no longer rely on the United States to impose order on the world, and that it needed to take matters close to home into its own hands.

“We can’t rely on the superpower of the United States,”
Merkel told a news conference in Berlin.

As AntiWar’s Jason Ditz notesMerkel did not elaborate on exactly what this “order” meant, but it comes in the context of recent polls showing German voters resistant to her desire to increase military spending. This suggests Merkel is trying to sell increased armament as a way to intervene regionally.

Merkel also said she intends to continue to work on improving Germany’s relationship with the United States. This appears to be an uphill battle, with the two nations at odds over a number of issues, but she insisted ties are “crucial.”

Just last week, President Trump said he has “a big problem” with Germany, and the US was threatening to sanction German companies for investing in a Russian energy pipeline. Trump expressed particular anger at the pipeline, saying it means Germany is effective “captive” to Russia.

Putting this accusation into context, Statista’s Sarah Feldman points out that Germany secures roughly three fifths of its energy needs from foreign sources. A fifth of its overall energy consumption comes from natural gas.

Germany Tells India to Ignore ‘Irritating’ US Pressure & Keep Buying Iranian Crude

  • Germany Tells India to Ignore ‘Irritating’ US Pressure & Keep Buying Iranian Crude
    by https://www.rt.com/
India and Iran are good partners in the oil trade despite Washington’s discontent, and they should continue cooperating if they so wish, Germany’s Minister of State for Foreign affairs Niels Annen said on a visit to New Delhi.

“I am not a salesman for Iran but I have an impression that India is willing to continue buying oil from Iran and this will be a very important statement,” Annen told Indian media, as quoted by Sputnik news agency. He said the US attempts to force its allies to join new anti-Iranian sanctions are “irritating, to put it mildly.”

India, which is dependent on crude imports, is Iran’s top oil client after China. Despite this, India bought 15.9 percent less crude from Iran in June compared to May. After that, Iran threatened that it would suspend all privileges in bilateral trade with India, including payments in rupees.

Last week, Reuters reported that India’s Oil Ministry has asked refiners to prepare for a “drastic reduction or zero” imports of Iranian oil from November, when US sanctions against Iran start.

“(India) has asked refiners to be prepared for any eventuality, since the situation is still evolving. There could be drastic reduction or there could be no imports at all,”
     Reuters wrote quoting its sources.

While India doesn’t recognize unilateral US sanctions against Iran, the country is exposed to the US financial system and could get caught in the crossfire. Washington could target Indian companies and banks that do business with Iran.
