Following promises (threats?) by EU bloc executive Jean-Claude Juncker and German Chancellor Angela Merkel that the European Union would soon impose retaliatory tariffs on the US while moving ahead with a settlement dispute at the WTO, Merkel’s chief spokesman Steffen Seibert reiterated Monday morning that the EU is “ready to take action” and that its planned trade countermeasures would be ready to take effect on July 1.

Earlier this month, EU members voiced their support for a plan that would slap 25% tariffs on up to $3.3 billion in US goods. The EU plan would also impose duties of between 10% and 50% on $4.2 billion in additional goods in March 2021, or sooner, if the WTO rules that the Trump tariffs are, in fact, illegal (as many of the US’s rivals have alleged). Meanwhile, Trump’s aluminum and steel tariffs would impact more than $7.5 billion in European goods.

However, Seibert added that Germany is still ready to resolve the trade standoff through the WTO. But with the US reluctant to do so, it’s likely that the “tit-for-tat” tariffs will continue until both sides decide to meet at the negotiating table.

“EU is on the Verge of COLLAPSE” – And It’s OUR FAULT Because of Migration, Says EC Boss

  • “EU is on the Verge of COLLAPSE” – And It’s OUR FAULT Because of Migration, Says EC Boss
by JOE BARNES, BRUSSELS CORRESPONDENT, https://www.express.co.uk/
THE EU is on the brink of DISINTEGRATION and it is all down to European politicians getting migration so badly wrong, Jean-Claude Juncker’s deputy admitted today.

Frans Timmermans sent the shock warning to European Union colleagues, declaring the bloc was “on the brink” and that “the unthinkable has become possible.” The first vice-president of the European Commission, standing in for his boss Jean-Claude Juncker, launched a devastatingly honest speech attacking the EU’s handling of migration and warned the break-up of the bloc was now a realistic prospect.

Following on from Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte’s demand for action, Mr Timmermans said: “The unthinkable has become possible. Who five years ago would have said the European Union could break up and disintegrate? Nobody!

“It was gratuitous to attack the European Union and its institutions because they were unbreakable.” The senior EU official put the migration crisis at the heart of the bloc’s troubles.

He added: “The European Union is not unbreakable, something that is breakable is extremely valuable. “What is the issue that has brought the European Union to the brink? The issue of migration. “The issue of migration has played a key role in all of our member states, wherever we are.

“Only we, as a European Union, can convince our citizens that we do have an answer to this – not deny migration, not pretend you can solve it by building fences and walls, not pretending we can solve it by letting everybody in.

“If you understand that we need a comprehensive approach to the migration issue, and only at European level will this comprehensive approach be valuable and work. If we cannot convince our member states and citizens of that, then we will be in the same situation as the Dutch citizens were in 1581.”

Iran is Delighted by Europe’s Support for Nuclear Deal, Rouhani Tells Macron

  • Iran is Delghted by Europe’s Support for Nuclear Deal, Rouhani Tells Macron
    by , http://www.newsweek.com/
Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron by phone on Tuesday, expressing his pleasure at Europe’s continued support of the nuclear agreement despite U.S. withdrawal.

“Rouhani expressed delight with the stance adopted so far by European countries including France to preserve the JCPOA [Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action],” the Iranian state news agency IRNA reported.

At the same time, the Iranian leader told Macron that statements European support “should be combined with actions and tangible measures.” Rouhani said he hopes the efforts to preserve the treaty by France, the United Kingdom, Germany, China and Russia—all signatories of the agreement—will be successful.

Macron responded to Rouhani by saying that he “hoped that Iran, for its part, will fulfill its obligations without any ambiguity,” Reuters reported. The French president also updated his Iranian counterpart on “the progress in the work being done” from Europe’s side.

President Donald Trump backed out of the 2015 agreement, considered a landmark foreign policy achievement of his predecessor, Barack Obama, on May 8. Long an opponent of the Iran nuclear accord, Trump had criticized the pact as “the worst deal ever.”

Iran Will Quit Nuclear Deal If It Does Not Benefit from It: President Rouhani

  • Iran Will Quit Nuclear Deal If It Does Not Benefit from It: President Rouhani
    by http://www.presstv.com/
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani says the Islamic Republic will quit the multilateral nuclear agreement Tehran signed with major world powers in 2015 if it does not benefit from the deal after the US pullout.

Rouhani made the remarks during a Tuesday phone call with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, a month after the United States’ unilateral move to withdraw from the nuclear agreement, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

“If Iran cannot enjoy the agreement’s benefits, it will be practically impossible to stay in it,” Rouhani said.

The Iranian president commended the statements of the European countries, including France, to salvage the JCPOA. However, he emphasized that such declarations must be accompanied by practical and tangible measures and solutions to help Iran benefit from the agreement.

“We should not allow that this very great diplomatic achievement be destroyed by the others’ unilateral measures and acts of violation,” he said.

Rouhani expressed hope that efforts by the five remaining signatories to the JCPOA and Iran as well as the European Union would be successful and fruitful.US President Donald Trump announced on May 8 that Washington was walking away from the nuclear agreement, which was reached between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China – plus Germany.

EU ON THE BRINK: Brussels Risks Collapse – Bloc ‘Not Solid Enough’ to Avert Future Crisis

  • EU ON THE BRINK: Brussels Risks Collapse – Bloc ‘Not Solid Enough’ to Avert Future Crisis
by JOE BARNES, BRUSSELS CORRESPONDENT, https://www.express.co.uk/
THE European Union risks collapse under the weight of any future significant challenges because it is not strong enough, according to an unpublished report by the European Fiscal Board.

Ageing populations and high government debts are a growing problem for Brussels which is still “not solid enough” to deal with another potential financial crisis, according to the paper which was presented to the European Commission’s leaders on Tuesday.

The independent advisory body’s chairman, Niels Thygesen, said it is time the EU pursues a more restrictive fiscal approach despite an upturn in the bloc’s finances. The EFB’s report reads: “Although fiscal positions have improved, they are currently not solid enough to withstand future challenges, that is, to absorb future downturns and the budgetary costs of ageing populations.

EU CRISIS WORSENS: Brussels Threatens to Tear Itself Apart as Migration Row ERUPTS

  • EU CRISIS WORSENS: Brussels Threatens to Tear Itself Apart as Migration Row ERUPTS
by JOE BARNES, BRUSSELS CORRESPONDENT, https://www.express.co.uk/
THE European Union is in danger of a complete meltdown as leaders from across the bloc continue to clash over how to handle a potential summer migration crisis with a EU Commissioner sending warning shots over several governments’ positions.

Nations are starting to rebel against Jean-Claude Juncker’s plans to include more funding for refugees in the EU’s next budget, mainly from Italy’s new coalition government of Lega and the Five Star Movement.

Tensions reached fever pitch when Matteo Salvini, Rome’s new interior minister and deputy prime minister, blocked a ship carrying 630 migrants, including seven pregnant women, stranded in the Mediterranean.

With Malta also refusing to accept the Aquarius vessel operated by the charities Medecins Sans Frontieres and Sos Mediterranee, Spain’s new prime minister Pedro Sanchez instructed port officials to welcome the ship into Valencia.

Trump “War Games” Announcement Shocks South Korea, US Military Forces

  • Trump “War Games” Announcement Shocks South Korea, US Military Forces
    by Tyler Durden, https://www.zerohedge.com/
In what was perhaps the most surprising announcement to emerge from today’s Trump-Kim summit, president Trump agreed to suspend military exercises with South Korea in return for a commitment to denuclearisation from North Korea.

As we reported earlier, Trump said the war games were expensive and “very provocative”, and yet stopping them has been called a “major concession”, something the US has previously rejected as non-negotiable on the grounds that the exercises are a key element of its military alliance with Seoul, and maintaining a deterrent against North Korea. In return, Trump said Kim had agreed in a joint statement to reassert “his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula”.

In other words, Trump made it appear that he is negotiating from a position of weakness to achieve a diplomatic goal which would have remained unachievable had Trump not taken the initiative. In doing so, however, he infuriated the neocons in his immediate circle. Immediately after the announcement, the WaPo’s Josh Rogin noted that “Everything Trump is saying and doing goes directly against everything Bolton has ever said or believed about North Korea.”

Russian Foreign Ministry Blames West for Provoking Ukraine into New Donbass War

  • Russian Foreign Ministry Blames West for Provoking Ukraine into New Donbass War
    by https://www.rt.com/
Russian diplomats say the non-stop outbursts of violence in Donbass confirm that Ukraine has no intention of honoring the Minsk Accords, and accuse the US and their allies of supporting Kiev’s course towards war.

As far as the UN presence in Donbass is concerned, it is well known that in September 2017 Russia submitted a draft resolution on the issue to the UN Security Council. However, we still have not received any amendments to this document, in written form. Instead, our European and American partners are promoting the ideas of a military operation of ‘coercing into peace’ and putting an international military-civilian administration in charge of the region before it holds any elections,” reads the ministry’s comment released on Saturday in connection with the planned meeting in the Normandy Four format in Berlin, scheduled for June 11.

Russian diplomats also noted that the aggravation of the situation in Donbass is clear confirmation of the fact that Kiev has no intention of sticking to the Minsk Agreements. “The recent events demonstrate that the Kiev authorities do not intend to fulfill the Minsk Agreements, that they blatantly distort the logic and sequence of these documents and draw an artificial connection between their readiness to move on along the political track and the full military capitulation of the Donbass republics and their giving up of the control of the border with Russia,” the comment reads.

War and Natural Gas: The Israeli Invasion and Gaza’s Offshore Gas Fields

  • War and Natural Gas: The Israeli Invasion and Gaza’s Offshore Gas Fields
    by Prof Michel Chossudovsky, https://www.globalresearch.ca/
Global Research, June 12, 2018, Global Research 8 January 2009
More than nine years ago, Israel invaded Gaza under “Operation Cast Lead”. The following article was first published by Global Research in January 2009 at the height of the Israeli bombing and invasion under Operation Cast Lead.

In the wake of the invasion, Palestinian gas fields were de facto confiscated by Israel in derogation of international law. A year following “Operation Cast Lead”,  Tel Aviv announced the discovery of  the Leviathan natural gas field in the Eastern Mediterranean “off the coast of Israel.”

At the time the gas field was: “ … the most prominent field ever found in the sub-explored area of the Levantine Basin, which covers about 83,000 square kilometres of the eastern Mediterranean region.” (i)

Coupled with Tamar field, in the same location, discovered in 2009, the prospects are for an energy bonanza for Israel, for Houston, Texas based Noble Energy and partners Delek Drilling, Avner Oil Exploration and Ratio Oil Exploration. (See Felicity Arbuthnot, Israel: Gas, Oil and Trouble in the Levant, Global Research, December 30, 2013

The Gazan gas fields are part of the broader Levant assessment area. What is now unfolding is the integration of these adjoining gas fields including those belonging to Palestine into the orbit of Israel. (see map below).

It should be noted that the entire Eastern Mediterranean coastline extending from Egypt’s Sinai to Syria constitutes an area encompassing large gas as well as oil reserves.

Iran’s Rouhani Asks Macron for Action to Save Nuclear Deal: IRNA

  • Iran’s Rouhani Asks Macron for Action to Save Nuclear Deal: IRNA
    by https://www.reuters.com/
PARIS/LONDON (Reuters) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani warned world powers on Tuesday that it was impossible for Tehran to stay in the nuclear deal if it cannot benefit from the accord after the U.S. withdrawal.

In a call with French President Emmanuel Macron, Rouhani said he was satisfied with Europe’s stance, especially French efforts to salvage the 2015 deal, but that “such statements should be combined with actions and tangible measures”.

“If Iran cannot benefit from the (nuclear) deal, then it’s practically impossible to stay in the accord,” Rouhani was quoted by state news agency IRNA as saying in a phone call with the French president. The pact between Iran and world powers lifted international sanctions on Tehran. In return, Iran scaled back its nuclear activities, increasing the time it would need to produce an atom bomb if it chose to do so, a goal it denies having.

Since President Donald Trump withdrew the United States in May, calling the accord flawed, European signatories – France, Britain and Germany – have been scrambling to ensure Iran retains enough economic benefits to persuade it not to pull out.

Macron’s office said he had told Rouhani in the same telephone call that France remained committed to the nuclear deal but Tehran needed to fully comply with its commitments. “The President of the Republic recalled the will of France, Britain, Germany, Russia and China, to continue to implement the Vienna agreement in all its dimensions,” Macron’s office said.

“The president informed President Rouhani of the progress in the work being done on our side. He hoped that Iran, for its part, will fulfill its obligations without any ambiguity.” Macron’s office confirmed a previously agreed ministerial meeting between all the remaining signatories of the deal, the European powers, China and Russia, would be held in the coming weeks in Vienna. French diplomatic sources said the meeting was likely to take place during the week of June 25.
