“… in-depth conversations about God … “
Top Trump spiritual adviser Paula White, who offered an invocation at Friday’s inauguration, says the billionaire president has a “heart for God, a hunger for God” and that they pray together before important events in his life.
In an interview with the New York Times published Thursday, the pastor of New Destiny Christian Center in Florida said she knows Trump “has a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. We’ve had in-depth conversations about God,” but, she added, the president does not speak “Christianese.”
White also revealed that during the past decade, Trump has tended to call her before most major events in his life to have her pray over him. The spiritual leader offered the examples of the season finale of The Apprentice and just minutes before his speech at the Republican National Convention last summer.
The pastor organized an evangelical advisory board for Trump during the presidential race that includes such noteworthy figures as Focus on the Family founder Dr. James Dobson, Liberty University president Jerry Falwell, Jr., Faith and Freedom Coalition founder Ralph Reed, Bishop Harry Jackson, Pastor Robert Morris, Pastor David Jeremiah, Pastors Kenneth and Gloria Copeland and former Minnesota congresswoman Michele Bachmann.
White told the Times the advisory board will expand during his administration. As reported by Western Journalism, White brought together a group of evangelicals at Trump Tower a few months after the businessman declared his candidacy for the presidency.
In a video from the meeting, she and other members of what would become his evangelical advisory board can been seen praying over Trump as he holds a copy of the Bible.
Texan Kenneth Copeland prayed that God would grant the then would-be commander-in-chief wisdom. “No man can be successful as president of the United States without Your wisdom. And so we ask You today to give this man Your wisdom, boldly. Make sure and certain that he hears. Manifest Yourself to him,” Copeland prayed. “And we thank You and praise You for a bold man, a strong man and an obedient man.”
“Let your favor be upon this one nation under God. Let these United States of America be that beacon of hope to all people and nations under your dominion, a true hope for humankind. Glory to the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.”
