The Turkish prime minister says his country is willing to accept a role for President Bashar Assad during the transition period in Syria. Binali Yildirim says Turkey is willing to become more of a regional player in regard to Syria over the next six months. He added that Ankara will not allow the country to be ethnically divided, and prefers a system in which all ethnic groups are represented. Meantime, Yildirim says the US is Turkey’s strategic partner, not its enemy despite the ups and downs in the two countries’ relations. He added that they need to remove the elements that are harming their relations, including the speeding up of the extradition of US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen who is held responsible for the failed coup attempt by Turkey.
