The European Union pledges its support for Ukraine amid the escalating tensions between Kiev and Moscow. EU foreign affairs chief, Federica Mogherini, asserted that the bloc is unwavering in its support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine. She also urged Kiev and Moscow to avoid any action which could further escalate tensions. Kiev accuses Russia of stoking unrest in the east of the country and around Crimea. The EU condemns and does not recognize the rejoining of Crimea to Russia, and deems it as illegal. Russia said it had thwarted terrorist attacks in peninsula last weekend by Ukraine. Mogherini said the EU would continue to monitor the situation and member state officials would discuss developments on Wednesday.
