Brexit Triggers Fears of Domino Effect in EU Members

  • Published on Jun 25, 2016
France’s foreign minister urges Britain to appoint a new prime minister quickly so that the process of the country’s exit from the European Union can begin. Ayrault went on to say that it’s not “respectful for Britain” to postpone the process. He warned any delays will entail financial consequences for the whole Europe. Ayrault’s comments echoed those of German Chancellor Angela Merkel who said the UK’s formal exit from the EU should not take forever. Foreign ministers of founding EU members have also called for the Brexit to start as soon as possible. The ministers from Germany, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Belgium and Luxemburg made the announcement after an emergency meeting in Berlin. German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier told reporters that Britain is not setting an example for Europe by voting to leave the EU.

Steinmeier stressed it’s important to keep Europe together after the Brexit vote. The decision has already triggered fears of a domino effect in member states. Slovakia’s far right People’s Party has launched a petition for a referendum on its EU membership. Brexit is taking its toll on the UK as well. After the British prime minister’s decision to resign, the country’s EU commissioner and finance chief Jonathan Hill announced he would step down too. Hill says he has no place in the EU now that his country has decided to leave the bloc. EU Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker says he’s ready to consider appointing a new British commissioner.

More Countries Could Follow UK Out of the EU, Says German Finance Ministry, as European Leaders Warn Radical Reform is Needed

  • More Countries Could Follow UK Out of the EU, Says German Finance Ministry, as European Leaders Warn Radical Reform is Needed
by France, the Netherlands, Austria, Finland and Hungary could all follow Britain out of the European Union in a rash of anti-Brussels rebellions, according to a paper prepared by the German finance ministry.

The warning came in a document obtained by German media as foreign ministers from the six EU founding member states met in Berlin to discuss how to shore up the ailing European project.

It came as Emmanuel Macron, the French economy minister, joined calls for EU reform, urging a new road map for the bloc to be put to a pan-European referendum.

“We’ve never had the courage to organise a true European referendum in its real sense. This next project must give it that strength,” he told a conference. “We would first build this new project with European peoples and then submit this new road map, this new project, to a referendum,” he said, adding that the idea was to have one single referendum across the bloc.

The Brexit vote has unnerved mainstream politicians across Europe about the rise of anti-establishment parties, particularly in France, where the far-Right, eurosceptic National Front is increasingly popular.

The foreign ministers of France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg conceded that they had to “find better ways of dealing with different levels” of commitment to closer European unity.

While some countries want to strengthen political and economic convergence, many others are wary of relinquishing their sovereignty.

“We are aware that discontent with the functioning of the EU as it is today is manifest in parts of our societies. We take this very seriously and are determined to make the EU work better for all our citizens,” they said in a statement.

Will the European Union Collapse in the Wake of Brexit?

EC president Donald Tusk appeals for calm as calls grow for referendums in other member states

As the world digests the news that the UK voted by 52 per cent to 48 per cent to leave the European Union, attention is turning to what this means for the future of the bloc itself. European leaders have long feared a domino effect could be set into motion, with the citizens of other member states demanding their own referendums.

Can the EU survive this setback?
Ukip leader Nigel Farage says he hopes the outcome will bring down the EU.

“I hope this victory brings down this failed project and leads us to a Europe of sovereign nations, trading together, being friends together, co-operating together. And let’s get rid of the flag, the anthem, Brussels and all that has gone wrong,” he told supporters, shortly before dawn today.

Others have also predicted Brexit would call time on the bloc. Earlier this month, billionaire investor George Soros said a Leave vote would make the break-up of the EU “almost certain”. He added: “If Britain leaves, it could unleash a general exodus and the disintegration of the European Union will become practically unavoidable.”

Will other countries try to leave the EU?
Efforts will be made to avoid “the psychology of a bank run” gripping the EU, amid calls for parallel referendums in the Netherlands, France, Poland and Hungary, says The Guardian

Such a domino effect has been the stated goal of some Leave campaigners – Michael Gove called for the “liberation of Europe”. France’s National Front leader Marine Le Pen, Dutch anti-immigration politician Geert Wilders and Italy’s Northern League have all called for their own vote.

Brexit Blowback Hits Italian and Spanish Banks. Worst Day for Italian & Spanish Stocks. Banks Massacred.

The prophets of Project Fear reaped what they’d sown, as financial carnage spread across global markets on news that a slim majority of British voters had done the unthinkable by drowning out the relentless doomsaying and voting to leave the European Union.

The pound sterling plunged 8% against the dollar, to $1.37, its lowest level in three decades. The euro fell 1.93%, in itself a huge one-day move for a major currency. UK stocks surrendered over 3% of their value. But that was nothing compared to the havoc unleashed in other European stock markets.

Germany’s DAX plummeted 7%; France’s CAC 40 over 8%. But even that pales compared to what happened in Spain and Italy: the IBEX 35 plummeted 12.3% and the FTSE MIB 12.5%. It was their worst day on record.

The UK economy may be in for a hellishly bumpy ride in the months and years ahead, but the fact that London’s FTSE 100 was Europe’s least worst performing stock market on this day of all days suggests that Europe’s biggest financial risks probably lie elsewhere. And that is in euro land, in particular on its southern flank.

The unpalatable truth, as even the former governor of the Federal Reserve, Alan Greenspan, conceded today, is that the euro “is failing”:

It is a very serious problem in that the southern part of the euro zone is being funded by the northern part and the European Central Bank.

Another serious problem (on which Greenspan was somewhat less forthcoming) is Europe’s swelling ranks of heavily leveraged, scantily capitalized, bad-loan bedeviled, zombified banks. It was they whose stocks plunged the most today. Despite the fact that central bankers around the world, led by the Bank of England’s Mark Carney, the ECB’s Mario Draghi and the Federal Reserve’s Janet Yellen, had pledged to print into existence countless billions of pounds, euros and dollars in a last-ditch attempt to backstop Europe’s crumbling financial system, the EU Stoxx 600 Banking index plummeted 14.5%.

Gerald Celente: Brexit Marks Start of EU Collapse, Financial Crisis

  • Gerald Celente: Brexit Marks Start of EU Collapse, Financial Crisis
    by http://sputniknews.com/
“The Brexit vote is the beginning of the end of the European Union,” Gerald Celente told Sputnik. “By all quantitative measures, since the [financial] panic of 2008, the strategies and actions taken by Brussels to restore economic growth have failed…as has their inability to control the migrant and refugee crisis.”

He also predicts that the referendum could lead to the end of several major European financial institutions. “It is also signalling the beginning of the end of the European Central Bank system and subsequently will expose the fundamentally flawed and rigged nature of the global central banks,” he said.

“On the grander geopolitical scale, as nations seeks independence from central government control, economic and political chaos will accelerate between the status quo and the agents of change.”
