- Panetta Says Iran has “Not Made the Decision” to Build a Nuclear Weapon!
Asked point blank about Iran building nuclear weapons, outgoing Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta said “that the intelligence we have is that they have not made the decision to proceed with the development of a nuclear weapon. They are developing and enriching uranium. They continue to do that. They continue to work at developing their capability.”
The statement was made on Meet the Press, Feb. 3, and while Panetta accused Iran of fomenting trouble in the region by backing the Assad regime in Syria, he insisted that U.S. intelligence does not show a nuclear weapons program in Iran— only that Iran is increasing its enrichment program to increase their nuclear capability. “They say they are doing it in order to develop their own energy source, but….” said Panetta, before the interviewer cut him off.
News reports from Iran and international media say that the next round of P5+1 talks has been set, and that these will take place on Feb. 25, most likely in Kazakhstan.
Leon Panetta: “What I’ve said, and I will say today, is that the intelligence we have is they have not made the decision to proceed with the development a nuclear weapon. They are developing and enriching uranium, they continue to do that…”
