    A gruesome video posted on YouTube shows Khalid al-Hamad, the leader of the opposition Farouq Brigade, desecrating the corpse of a Syrian soldier, cutting out his internal organs and biting into one of them.

    The video makes clear the barbaric character of the Sunni Islamist militias Washington has mobilized in its proxy war against the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The video was made to terrorize Syria’s Shiite Alawite community, from which most of the Assad government is drawn, and to encourage donations from the Farouq Brigade’s financial backers in the Persian Gulf oil sheikhdoms.

    While desecrating the Syrian soldier’s body, an action that legally is a war crime, Hamad screams: “I swear we will eat from your hearts and livers, you dogs of Bashar… Look at the heroes of Baba Amr, slaughtering the Alawites and eating their hearts.”

    Founded as the Syrian war began in mid-2011, the Farouq Brigade has been active around the Baba Amr area of the city of Homs, an early center of armed Islamist opposition to Assad. There are varying reports of its strength, ranging from a few thousand to 20,000 men.

In the clip, I am sawing another shabiha [pro-Assad militiaman] with a saw, the saw we use to cut trees. I sawed him into small piece and large ones.”

    Significantly, Western officials speaking to the BBC described the Farouq Brigade as a “moderately Islamist” tendency inside the US-backed opposition, as compared to supposedly more extremist forces like the Al Nusra Front, which is affiliated to Al Qaeda.

    This shows that current proposals in Washington to only arm “moderate” opposition forces, presented as an alternative to arming the entire opposition, including Al Nusra, are a cynical fraud. In either case, Washington and its European allies are arming war criminals calling for sectarian mass murder.

    While Hamad’s video is particularly gruesome, numerous graphic videos posted by the US-backed opposition have made its bloody, sectarian character clear from early on. To name only a few, such videos include Sunni Sheikh Adnan al-Arour’s July 2011 threat to run Syrian Alawites through a “meat grinder,” and 2012 videos of opposition fighters beheading a prisoner and another forcing a child to do so.

The Obama administration has continued funding them to the tune of $500 million—as its Persian Gulf allies also poured money and thousands of tons of weapons into the opposition—even after Washington formally designated Al Nusra as a terrorist group last December.

    As reports of Hamad’s video broke in the British press on Monday, British Prime Minister David Cameron said that he might sanction direct military intervention in Syria to back the opposition, citing claims that the Assad regime has used chemical weapons. Allegations of chemical weapons use by Assad had already been refuted by UN investigator Carla del Ponte, who said that these weapons, used in March, were fired by the opposition.

    Some financial markets commentators seem to be eagerly awaiting the dollar to  collapse under the weight of the Fed’s monetary expansion. The wee problem with  that view is that everyone knows that the party that trashes its currency gets a  nice boost to its export sector, but it’s easy for this sort of behavior to  devolve into “beggar thy neighbor” competitive devaluations (witness our recent  finger-shaking at Japan). And since policy-makers in the major economies are  deeply devoted to our current “free trade” system, the tacit assumption has been  that we might see some jockeying within the current system, but no real  breaks.

    And the second major reason for the mainstream view that the dollar’s  dominance is not at risk is that no other large economy wants the burden of  serving as the reserve currency, which entails running trade deficits much of  the time.

    The status of the US dollar as the world reserve currency gives the US a  number of advantages over other countries. The world’s most important  commodities are priced and traded in dollars, even if most of these commodities  are not produced in the US. The fact that the world’s financial system is based  on the dollar allows the Federal Reserve to export inflation to other countries,  while the Federal Government runs a huge deficit with impunity.

    So far, only China has been active in challenging the dollar supremacy. The  internationalization of the yuan is an official priority of Chinese leaders.  Currency swap agreements with major trade partners like Brazil, France, or  Australia are small but important steps in the Chinese strategy. Changing the  world financial system is not an easy task and certainly a very challenging  undertaking for China. Now, it seems that Beijing has found an ally in the  Kremlin. And there appears to be a consensus between the BRICS countries: the  urgent necessity to dismantle the dollar system.

    A week before the recent BRICS summit in Durban, the Kremlin administration  has silently produced a document which describes the Russian strategy in the  context of BRICS cooperation. The document makes for a fascinating read for  anyone brave enough to plow through the dense Russian legalese. The strategy has  been designed in the “inner circle” of Vladimir Putin’s team, so it is safe to  assume that it represents the official view on the BRICS future.

    In Russia, politics are Byzantine; the fact that the Kremlin decided not to  hide the document or leak it to a chosen few journalists, but publish it  outright is a very strong signal, a very vocal angry signal directed at the US.  A signal that the Western media chose to ignore.

    In the recitals section of the document, the authors point out that “there is  a common desire of the BRICS partners to reform the outdated global financial  and economic framework that doesn’t take into account the growing economic  weight of the emerging markets.” Moreover, the Russian strategists view the  BRICS as a tool to reform the way the world is being governed. Then the document  hammers home its message:

    Russia assumes that, given enough political will of the leadership of the  BRICS countries to advance their cooperation, this alliance can become one of  the key elements of a new system for global governance, primarily in the  economic and financial domains.

    Move aside New World Order! The BRICS are coming to change the world.

    The goals are clear. In the section titled “Strategic goals,” the first point  on the BRICS’ agenda is the reform of the world financial system in order to  make it “fairer, more stable, and more efficient.” In the later chapters, it is  spelled clearly that this “reform” is actually a dismantling of the dollar  system.

    It is worth noting that the place of this issue in the list of the BRICS’ priorities speaks volumes about its importance. Judging by the order of  priorities, depriving the dollar of its status as the world reserve currency is  more important than “preventing breaches of sovereignty” (a.k.a. the “Syrian  problem”) or “expanding economic cooperation.”

    TO THE EDITORS OF NEW YORK TIMES:

    Among the most disturbing political phenomena of our times is the emergence in the newly created state of Israel of the “Freedom Party” (Tnuat Haherut), a political party closely akin in its organization, methods, political philosophy and social appeal to the Nazi and Fascist parties. It was formed out of the membership and following of the former Irgun Zvai Leumi, a terrorist, right-wing, chauvinist organization in Palestine.

    The current visit of Menachem Begin, leader of this party, to the United States is obviously calculated to give the impression of American support for his party in the coming Israeli elections, and to cement political ties with conservative Zionist elements in the United States. Several Americans of national repute have lent their names to welcome his visit. It is inconceivable that those who oppose fascism throughout the world, if correctly informed as to Mr. Begin’s political record and perspectives, could add their names and support to the movement he represents.

    Before irreparable damage is done by way of financial contributions, public manifestations in Begin’s behalf, and the creation in Palestine of the impression that a large segment of America supports Fascist elements in Israel, the American public must be informed as to the record and objectives of Mr. Begin and his movement.

    The public avowals of Begin’s party are no guide whatever to its actual character. Today they speak of freedom, democracy and anti-imperialism, whereas until recently they openly preached the doctrine of the Fascist state. It is in its actions that the terrorist party betrays its real character; from its past actions we can judge what it may be expected to do in the future.

    Attack on Arab Village
    A shocking example was their behavior in the Arab village of Deir Yassin. This village, off the main roads and surrounded by Jewish lands, had taken no part in the war, and had even fought off Arab bands who wanted to use the village as their base. On April 9 (THE NEW YORK TIMES), terrorist bands attacked this peaceful village, which was not a military objective in the fighting, killed most of its inhabitants (240 men, women, and children) and kept a few of them alive to parade as captives through the streets of Jerusalem. Most of the Jewish community was horrified at the deed, and the Jewish Agency sent a telegram of apology to King Abdullah of Trans-Jordan. But the terrorists, far from being ashamed of their act, were proud of this massacre, publicized it widely, and invited all the foreign correspondents present in the country to view the heaped corpses and the general havoc at Deir Yassin.

    The Deir Yassin incident exemplifies the character and actions of the Freedom Party.

    Within the Jewish community they have preached an admixture of ultranationalism, religious mysticism, and racial superiority. Like other Fascist parties they have been used to break strikes, and have themselves pressed for the destruction of free trade unions. In their stead they have proposed corporate unions on the Italian Fascist model.

    During the last years of sporadic anti-British violence, the IZL and Stern groups inaugurated a reign of terror in the Palestine Jewish community. Teachers were beaten up for speaking against them, adults were shot for not letting their children join them. By gangster methods, beatings, window-smashing, and wide-spread robberies, the terrorists intimidated the population and exacted a heavy tribute.

    The people of the Freedom Party have had no part in the constructive achievements in Palestine. They have reclaimed no land, built no settlements, and only detracted from the Jewish defense activity. Their much-publicized immigration endeavors were minute, and devoted mainly to bringing in Fascist compatriots.

    Discrepancies Seen
    The discrepancies between the bold claims now being made by Begin and his party, and their record of past performance in Palestine bear the imprint of no ordinary political party. This is the unmistakable stamp of a Fascist party for whom terrorism (against Jews, Arabs, and British alike), and misrepresentation are means, and a “Leader State” is the goal.

    In the light of the foregoing considerations, it is imperative that the truth about Mr. Begin and his movement be made known in this country. It is all the more tragic that the top leadership of American Zionism has refused to campaign against Begin’s efforts, or even to expose to its own constituents the dangers to Israel from support to Begin.

    The undersigned therefore take this means of publicly presenting a few salient facts concerning Begin and his party; and of urging all concerned not to support this latest manifestation of fascism.

    Not only has Israel supported Al-Qaeda-led rebels in Syria, but back in 2002 Israel was caught actually creating an Al-Qaeda group in order to justify attacks on Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

    Israel is sending military vehicles into Syria to pick up wounded Al-Qaeda terrorists involved in the fight against the Syrian Army before patching them up and sending them back into battle, another startling example of how the Zionist state is working with its supposedly sworn enemies to topple President Bashar Al-Assad.

    That’s a not a claim being made by Iranian or Syrian state media, it’s calmly admitted in a report by the staunchly pro-Israel DebkaFile.

    “Israel has set up a large field hospital near the Tel Hazakah observation and military post on Golan which overlooks southern Syria and northern Jordan. There, incoming Syrian war wounded are vetted and examined by Israeli army medics who decide whether to patch them up and send them back, or judge them badly hurt enough for hospital care. The seriously hurt are moved to one of the the nearest Israeli hospitals in Safed or Haifa,” states the report.

    The report notes that the wounded fighters are probably being rescued by unmarked “Israeli army vehicles” that are “entering Syria to pick up injured rebels.”

    In addition to the latest information, an AFP report from March also documented how the IDF had set up a “military field hospital” at army outpost 105 in the Golan Heights in order to rescue and treat FSA fighters.

    By treating and rehabilitating wounded FSA militants and Al-Qaeda terrorists, Israel is aiding the very same rebels who have burned Israeli flags in public and vowed to crush the Zionist regime once they are finished toppling Bashar Al-Assad.

    Multiple reports now confirm that the primary frontline militants in Syria fighting against Assad’s forces are members of the Al-Qaeda group Jabhat al-Nusra which “killed numerous American troops in Iraq,” and is now leading western-backed rebel forces in Syria. After the organization was declared a terrorist group by the US State Department, 29 different US-backed Syrian opposition groups pledged their allegiance to al-Nusra.

    The DebkaFile report admits that Jabhat al-Nusra fighters are now heavily concentrated, “in the 8 sq. km separation zone on the Golan” from where the Israeli military is rescuing them for medical treatment.

    According to Egyptian and Jordanian intelligence sources, Israel’s air strike on Syria was this past weekend was also timed to precede an Al-Qaeda-led rebel offensive against President Bashar Al-Assad’s forces, who had been scoring major military victories up until that point.

    A May 8 London Guardian report notes how Jabhat al-Nusra is “emerging as the best-equipped, financed and motivated force fighting Bashar al-Assad’s regime,” and how droves of FSA fighters are now joining its ranks.
