More than 1.6 Billion rounds of ammo have been ordered by Department of Homeland Security. Quite obviously to be used in the Homeland ie.: American soil. There are many who say that the US government is massively buying up all ammo to prevent Americans from getting them. I am in agreement with it. But why would the government do such a thing? It also does not explain why the DHS has ordered hundreds of millions of deadly hollow point ammo rounds. It is not like these are in great demand anywhere in America. It is very expensive and hardly ordered and used by civilians who buy guns. The suggestion that it is for target practice is ABSURD! Unless the targets are American citizens!

  The Denver Post, on February 15^th, ran an Associated Press article entitled Homeland Security aims to buy 1.6b rounds of ammo, so far to little notice.  It confirmed that the Department of Homeland Security has issued an open purchase order for 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition.  As reported elsewhere, some of this purchase order is for hollow-point rounds, forbidden by international law for use in war, along with a frightening amount specialized for snipers. Also reported elsewhere, at the height of the Iraq War the Army was expending less than 6 million rounds a month.  Therefore 1.6 billion rounds would be enough to sustain a hot war for 20+ years.  In America.

  Add to this perplexing outré purchase of ammo, DHS now is showing off its acquisition of heavily armored personnel carriers, repatriated from the Iraqi and Afghani theaters of operation.  As observed by “paramilblogger” Ken Jorgustin last September:

  Regardless of the exact number of MRAP’s being delivered to DHS (and evidently some to POLICE via DHS, as has been observed), why would they need such over-the-top vehicles on U.S. streets to withstand IEDs, mine blasts, and 50 caliber hits to bullet-proof glass?   Seriously, why would DHS need such a vehicle on our streets?” Why indeed?  It is utterly inconceivable that Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is planning a coup d’etat against President Obama, and the Congress, to install herself as Supreme Ruler of the United States of America.  There, however, are real signs that the Department bureaucrats are running amok.  About 20 years ago this columnist worked, for two years, in the U.S. Department of Energy’s general counsel’s office in its procurement and finance division.  And is wise to the ways.   The answer to “why would DHS need such a vehicle?” almost certainly is this:  it’s a cool toy and these (reportedly) million dollar toys are being recycled, without much of a impact on the DHS budget.  So… why not?

  Why, indeed, should the federal government not be deploying armored personnel carriers and stockpiling enough ammo for a 20-year war in the homeland?  Because it’s wrong in every way.  President Obama has an opportunity, now, to live up to some of his rhetoric by helping the federal government set a noble example in a matter very close to his heart (and that of his Progressive base), one not inimical to the Bill of Rights: gun control.  The federal government can (for a nice change) begin practicing what it preaches by controlling itself.

  Remember the Sequester?  The president is claiming its budget cuts will inconvenience travelers by squeezing essential services provided by the (opulently armed and stylishly uniformed) DHS.  Quality ammunition is not cheap.  (Of course, news reports that DHS is about to spend $50 million on new uniforms suggests a certain cavalier attitude toward government frugality.)

  Spending money this way is beyond absurd well into perverse.  According to the AP story a DHS spokesperson justifies this acquisition to “help the government get a low price for a big purchase.” Peggy Dixon, spokeswoman for the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center:  “The training center and others like it run by the Homeland Security Department use as many as 15 million rounds every year, mostly on shooting ranges and in training exercises.”

Their most recent request is for 10 million rounds of hollow point bullets for a .40 caliber pistol, another 10 million rounds for a 9 millimeter, plus 1.6 million pistol cartridge 9mm ball bullets. That’s just this year. Last March, DHS bought 450 million bullets. In September, another 200 million. That’s in addition to the reported 1.6 billion rounds the government already had ordered. During the height of the Iraq war, US Soldiers used about 5.5 million rounds of ammunition every month.

We never trained with hollow points, we didn’t even see hollow points my entire 4 and a half years in the Marine Corps., says Mason. Why would they need all those hollow points, why would they need all those ball rounds just for training? McCurley says it’s been a hot topic of conversation at his gun range.

It’s to keep it from being able to get out to the public, to raise the cost up. According to the National Rifle Association, the ammunition buy-up should not be cause for concern.   A military veteran has questioned why the  Department of Homeland Security is purchasing enormous amounts of ammunition,  making it clear that he believes the bullets cannot possibly be for training  purposes.

  Commenting on the DHS’s procurement of roughly 2 billion hollow point bullets over the course of the  last year, former Marine Richard Mason told reporters with WHPTV News in  Pennsylvania that he has serious concerns.

  “We never trained with hollow points, we didn’t  even see hollow points my entire four and a half years in the Marine Corps,”  Mason said.

  When questioned recently, DHS official Peggy Dixon  claimed the bullets were bought in bulk to save money and were for training  purposes only. However, hollow point bullets, are very expensive in ammunition  terms, and it is highly unusual to use such bullets for target practice.

  Record federal government purchases have coincided  with national shortages of ammunition in gun stores, leading some  to believe that it is a deliberate tactic to deprive gun owners, or something  much worse.

  To put the DHS’ ammunition solicitations in  perspective, during the height of active battle operations in Iraq, US soldiers used 5.5 million rounds of ammunition a month.  Extrapolating the figures, the DHS has purchased enough bullets over the last  year to wage a full scale war for almost 30 years.

  Last September, the DHS also purchased no less  than 7,000 fully automatic assault rifles, labeling them “Personal  Defense Weapons.”

The agency has also ordered bullet-proof checkpoint booths and hired hundreds of new security guards to protect government buildings over the course of the last 12 months.

  There is also strong evidence to suggest that the DHS has recently bought around 2,700 armored military style trucks. The agency has also cemented a $2 million dollar relationship with a contractor that recently had to apologize for producing shooting targets of pregnant women, children and elderly gun owners depicted in residential settings.

  Coupled with continued and sustained secrecy surrounding these purchases and contracts, many Americans are convinced that  the federal government is “stockpiling” in preparation for “civil  unrest.”

  A retired Houston cop believes that the recent  production of “non traditional” shooting targets at the request of law enforcement and the government indicates  that there is a disturbing ongoing program to desensitize police.

  T.F. Stern, writing on his website The Moral Liberal, states that the cardboard cutouts  of pregnant women, children, and elderly citizens, for police target practice  can only have been created by a “sick mind”, with the intention of having police  officers or Homeland Security “goons” completely disregard humanity.

  Whether consciously intentional or not, “Maybe  it’s the natural progression, a downward spiral of perversion,” Stern states, the result is to have police “feel nothing’s wrong in shooting a pregnant lady  or an old man with a shotgun inside his own home.”

  “What does it say about the mindset of an entire  police department that trains for such an event…trains for it as if it were a  common every day event rather than the exception which might happen once in a  ‘blue moon’.” Stern urges.

  Stern notes, as we did in our original reports,  that the images were produced only because there was a demand for them from law  enforcement. In our latest article we note that Law Enforcement Training Inc. has  racked up contracts worth almost $2 million dollars mainly for  “training aids” and “paperboard,” with the DHS over the last three years.

  “There’s something wrong, seriously wrong here.”  Stern states, adding that police are being trained to essentially become  domestic standing armies.

  Even though the National Rifle Association says that the amount of ammunition bought isn’t excessive, considering the number of federal agents and the fact that the ammunition is used over a five-year period, there are others who question why the need for so many federal agents. Among them is Jeff Knox, director of The Firearms Coalition, who said:

  It’s not the number of bullets we need to worry about but the number of feds with guns it takes to use those bullets. There are currently more than 70 different federal law enforcement agencies employing over 120,000 officers with arrest and firearms authority . . . That’s an increase of nearly 30 percent between 2004 and 2008. If the trends have continued upward at a relatively steady rate, that would put the total number of federal law enforcement officers at somewhere between 135,000 and 145,000. That’s a pretty staggering number, especially when you consider that there are only an estimated 765,000 state and local law enforcement officers. That means that about one in seven law enforcement officers in the country works directly for the federal government, not a local jurisdiction.
