    In August Sweden’s largest daily newspaper published an article containing grisly evidence  suggesting that Israel had been taking Palestinian internal organs. The article, by veteran photojournalist  Donald Bostrom, called for an international investigation to discover the facts.1

    Israel immediately accused Bostrom and the newspaper of “anti-Semitism,” and  charged that suggesting Israelis could be involved in the illicit removal of body parts constituted  a modern “blood libel” (medieval stories of Jews killing people for their blood).2

    Numerous Israeli partisans repeated these accusations, including Commentary’s  Jonathan Tobin, who asserted that the story was “merely the tip of the iceberg in terms of European funded and promoted anti-Israel hate.”3 Others suggested that the newspaper  was “irresponsible” for running such an article.4
    -
    The fact is, however, that Israeli organ harvesting – sometimes with Israeli governmental  funding and the participation of high Israeli officials, prominent Israeli physicians, and Israeli  ministries – has been documented for many years. Among the victims have been Palestinians.

    Nancy Scheper-Hughes is Chancellor’s Professor of Medical Anthropology at the University  of California Berkeley, the founder of Organ Watch, and the author of scholarly books and articles  on organ trafficking. She is the pundit mainstream media call upon when they need expert commentary  on the topic.5

    While Scheper-Hughes emphasizes that traffickers and procurers come from numerous nations  and ethnicities, including Americans and Arabs, she is unflinchingly honest in speaking about  the Israeli connection:
    -
    “Israel is at the top,” she states. “It has tentacles reaching out worldwide.”6

    In a lecture last year sponsored by New York’s PBS 13 Forum, Scheper-Hughes explained  that Israeli organ traffickers, “had and still have a pyramid system at work that’s  awesome…they have brokers everywhere, bank accounts everywhere; they’ve got recruiters,  they’ve got translators, they’ve got travel agents who set up the visas.”7

    Lest this sound simply like a successful international concern, it’s important to understand  the nature of such a business. As Scheper-Hughes describes it, organ trafficking consists of “paying the poor and the  hungry to slowly dismantle their bodies.”

    Organ traffickers prey on the world’s poorest, most desperate citizens – slum dwellers,  inhabitants of dying villages, people without means or hope. Traffickers promise them what seem  like astronomical sums of money (from $1,000 to $10,000) – which they frequently don’t  even deliver – in return for vital internal organs.

    For traffickers, human body parts are commodities, to be cut out of the bodies of the poor and  sold to the rich. The organ “donors” receive no follow-up care and end up worse off on  many levels – physically, financially, psychologically, socially – than even their  original tragic situation. Sometimes they are coerced into such “donations.”

    Organ sales have been illegal in most countries for years. The United Nations Convention against  Transnational Organized Crime, which covers prevention, enforcement and sanctions in trafficking  of humans, includes in its definition of human exploitation the extraction of organs for profit.8  Israel finally passed legislation against organ trafficking in 2008.9, 10

    In her Forum 13 lecture Scheper-Hughes discussed the two motivations of Israeli traffickers.  One was greed, she said. The other was somewhat chilling: “Revenge, restitution – reparation  for the Holocaust.”

    She described speaking with Israeli brokers who told her “it’s kind of ‘an  eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. We’re going to get every single kidney and liver and heart  that we can. The world owes it to us.’” Scheper-Hughes says that she “even heard doctors saying that.”

    For many years Israelis in need of an internal organ have gone on what experts call “transplant  tourism” – traveling to other nations to obtain internal organs. Sometimes body parts  are obtained from those freshly dead; more often from the desperately needy. While affluent people  from numerous countries and ethnicities engage in this practice, Israel is unique in several significant  ways.

    First, Israelis engage in this at an extraordinarily high rate. According to a 2001 BBC report,  Israelis buy more kidneys per capita than any other population.

    Second, Israelis have the lowest donor rate in the world – one-fifth that of Europe, according  to BBC. This is in part because there has been a widespread impression that Jewish religious law  prohibits transplants as a “desecration of the body.”11 The Israeli news  service Ynet reports, “the percentage of organs donated among Jews is the lowest of all the  ethnic groups.”12

    Third, the Israeli government has enabled the practice. For many years the Israeli health system  subsidized its citizens’ “transplant holidays,” reimbursing Israelis $80,000  for medical operations abroad. Much of the remaining costs could often be obtained from government-subsidized13  Israeli insurance plans.14 In addition, Israel’s Ministry of Defense was directly  involved.

    Scheper-Hughes discussed Israeli organ trafficking in detail in 2001 in published testimony  to the Subcommittee on International Relations and Human Rights of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.15  In her extensive testimony, Scheper-Hughes stated that although Israel had become a pariah for  its organ policies, Israeli officials exhibited “amazing tolerance…toward outlawed  ‘transplant tourism.’”

    She described an international syndicate which was “organized through a local business  corporation in conjunction with a leading transplant surgeon, operating out of a major medical  center not far from Tel Aviv,” and which had forged links with transplant surgeons in Turkey,  Russia, Moldavia, Estonia, Georgia, Romania, and New York City.

    The Israeli Ministry of Defense was directly involved in what Scheper-Hughes called Israel’s  “‘illicit [in other nations] national ‘program’ of transplant tourism…Members  of the Ministry of Defense or those closely related to them” accompanied transplant junkets.

    In her Forum 13 lecture, Scheper-Hughes said that investigating Israeli organ trafficking  over the past decade had taken her “from country to country to country to country.”

    One of these is Moldova, the poorest country in Europe – and homeland of Israeli Foreign  Minister Avigdor Lieberman – where 90 percent of the people earn less than $2 a day. A 2001 BBC  report on organ trafficking described the situation: “Hundreds of Israelis have created  a production line that starts in the villages of Moldova, where men today are walking around with  one kidney.16

    Another is Brazil, where a legislative commission found that 30 [it may actually have been as  high as 60] Brazilians from impoverished neighborhoods had sold their kidneys to a trafficking  ring headed by Israelis, with Israeli citizens receiving almost all of the organs, and the Israeli  government providing most of the funding.17

    The ring had also begun inquiring about buying other vital organs from poor residents, including  lungs, livers and corneas.18

    An Inter Press Service (IPS) news story from the time reported that Scheper-Hughes testified  to the commission that international trafficking of human organs had begun some 12 years earlier,  promoted by Zaki Shapira, head of kidney transplant services at Bellinson Medical Center, near  Tel Aviv.

    Scheper-Hughes reported that Shapira had performed more than 300 kidney transplants, sometimes  accompanying his patients to other countries such as Turkey. The recipients were very wealthy  or had very good health insurance, and the “donors” very poor people from Eastern Europe,  the Philippines and other developing countries.

    The chairman of the Brazilian commission, physician Raimundo Pimentel, was outraged at Israeli  policies, pointing out that trafficking can only take place on a large scale if there is a major source  of financing, such as the Israeli health system. Pimentel charged that the resources provided  by the Israeli health system “were a determining factor” in enabling a network that  preyed on society’s poorest populations.

    In 2004 there were reports that Israeli traffickers had added China to their target donor populations.19  In one recent case an Israeli paid an organ broker $100,000 for a kidney transplant in China from  an 18-year-old Chinese girl. She received $5,000 and died following surgery.20

    New York Times reporter Larry Rohter pointed out that allowing brokers to operate with  few restrictions benefited Israel “by exporting Israel’s organ shortage overseas.”  Rohter cites a kidney specialist at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem who explained that patients  who go abroad “‘save the country a lot of money; not only in terms of what doesn’t  have to be spent on dialysis, but also by opening places for other people who are on the list.’”21

    Many people find governmental complicity in organ trafficking deeply troubling on moral and  philosophical grounds. As Scheper-Hughes testified: “The sale of human organs and tissues requires that certain  disadvantaged individuals, populations, and even nations have been reduced to the role of ‘suppliers.’

    “It is a scenario in which only certain bodies are broken, dismembered, fragmented, transported,  processed, and sold in the interests of a more socially advantaged population…of receivers.”  She believes that the risks and benefits of organ transplant surgery should be more equally distributed  among nations, ethnic groups, and social classes.

    The state of Israel was established and is sustained on the continuous perpetration of genocides, destruction of whole towns, land theft, home demolition, ethnic cleansing, and terror against Palestinians. The massacre of the Palestinian small town of Deir Yassin in 9th of April 1948; 65 years ago of this week, is just one typical massacre story that details Zionist Jewish Israeli savagery prescribed in their holy book, the Talmud.

    Palestine at the time was under the British occupation (Mandate) that ended on 15th of May 1948. Until that time there was no Israeli government or Israeli army, rather Zionist Jewish militia groups financed and armed by World Zionist Organization and the Jewish Agency. The largest was the Haganah; a secret Jewish terrorist group armed and trained by officers from the British army. The Haganah, later, formed the backbone of the present Israeli army. Within the Haganah there was an elite striking force called the Palmach, who specialized in assassination, terror and demolition. There were also two other smaller underground terrorist groups; Itzel or Irgun founded by  Se’ev Jabotinsky the head of the Jewish Zionist Organization,  and Lehi or Stern founded by the Zionist terrorist Abraham Stern.

    Before the end of the British Mandate the Zionist leaders launched on April 4th 1948 their general expansionist colonial plan dubbed as “Plan Dalet”; a Zionist master offensive military plan with many sub-operations such as Nachshon, Harel, and Maccabi, whose aim was the systematic ethnic cleansing of as many Palestinians as possible and the theft of as much Palestinian land as possible before the end of the British Mandate. The Haganah had committed many massacres against the Palestinian population and had totally razed as many as 400 Palestinian towns. The Haganah thus gained popularity among the Zionist Jews.

    There developed a competition between the Haganah on one side and the Irgun and Lehi on the other for popularity among Jews and for political leadership in the perceived future Israeli state. Such gain was achieved by one side in uprooting and transferring Palestinians and in the destruction of their towns and villages more than the other side.

    During the first week of April 1948 the Haganah launched Operation Nachshon to carve out and hold a highway passage for their forces from Tel Aviv on the Mediterranean coast in the west all the way to Jerusalem in the interior of the country committing on their way many massacres of Palestinian civilians and demolishing their towns. The Haganah, at the time, was held up still by Palestinian fighters at Al-Qastal; west of Jerusalem and a few miles away from the village of Deir Yassin.

    On the other side Irgun and Lehi terrorist groups wanted to gain popularity over the held-up Haganah through a military victory. They chose an easy virtually unarmed defenseless village of Deir Yassin as their target.  Deir Yassin was a small Palestinian village located west of Jerusalem with about 750 inhabitants, who lived peacefully with their neighboring Zionist Jewish colony of Giv’at Shaul despite all the political and military conflicts of that time.  The two communities had signed a non-aggression agreement between them. Yet, typical of Zionist Jews, who throughout their long history had never honored any agreement they signed with non-Jews, Zionist Jewish terrorist groups of Irgun and Lehi came out of Giv’at Shaul, attacked the Palestinian village of Deir Yassin on Friday 9th of April 1948 and savagely murdered scores of them; men, women and children, blew up their homes and wiped the village off the map.

    Irgun was headed by Menachim Begin, who became the 6th Israeli prime minister, while Lehi was headed by Yitzhak Shamir, who became the 7th Israeli prime minister.  Israel is the only country where terrorist leaders such as Menachim Begin and Yitzhak Shamir (also Ehud Barak and Ariel Sharon) are rewarded with the position of prime ministers.

    In a joint operation coded “Operation Unity” the two Zionist Jewish terrorist groups attacked Deir Yassin in the morning of April 9th, 1948 with the aim of killing as many Palestinians as possible and of forcing the rest out of their homes and land. Driving through the only street leading to the village the attackers were held up by Palestinian snipers using old one-shot hunting rifles. When four attackers were killed the terrorist groups called the commander of the Haganah, David Shaltiel, for help. He sent some of his troops among them a Palmach unit commanded by Mordechai Weg. With an armored vehicle and a two-inch mortar they were able to silence the resistance and occupy the village in a matter of two hours.

    A process of cleaning up the village was, then, conducted by the terrorist groups which included the rape of some women, the cold murder of many Palestinians, and the blowing up of homes. Men and women were lined up against the walls in the main street and executed in cold blood. Members of whole families were murdered in their homes even after surrendering. Girls and women were raped and then murdered. The Zionist terrorists had bayoneted the wombs of Pregnant women and crushed the heads and bodies of dozens of children and babies. This cleanup process continued through the next two days, Saturday and Sunday, and demonstrated the savagery of the Zionist Jewish terrorists.

    Members of the Zionist terror groups, themselves, had reported such atrocities. Among the many of them was Yehoshua Gorodenchik, an Irgun physician, reported that they had to withdraw at one time and had decided to murder all prisoners. “We had prisoners and before the retreat we decided to liquidate them, we also liquidated the wounded… we eliminated every Arab we came across up to that point.”

    Eliyahu Arbel, a Haganah operations officer, inspected the village and reported: “I have seen a great deal of war, but I never saw a sight like Deir Yassin … largely comprised of the bodies of women and children, who were murdered in cold blood.”

    Israeli colonel Meir Pa’el admitted that “The Irgun and Lehi men came out of hiding and began to ‘clean’ the houses.  They shot whoever they saw, women and children included, the commanders did not try to stop the massacre …”

    Zvi Ankori, who commanded one of the terrorist units at Deir Yassin stated: “I went into 6 to 7 houses.  I saw cut off genitalia and women’s crushed stomachs.  According to the shooting signs on the bodies, it was direct murder.” (New York Jewish Newsletter in October 1960)

    Alfred Engel, a Jewish physician, who was on site, saw that “It was clear that the attackers had gone from house to house and shot the people at close range.”

    The most damning graphic description of the massacre of Deir Yassin came from Jacques de Reynier, the then representative of the International Red Cross, who was the first to reach the site. His statement indicated that “there were people rushing everywhere, in and out of houses, carrying Sten guns, rifles, pistols and long ornate knives.  They seemed half mad.  I saw a beautiful girl carrying a dagger still covered with blood. I heard screams … everything had been ripped apart. There were bodies strewn around… cleaning up was done with guns and grenades, the work finished with knives.” Reynier estimated seeing some 200 bodies, one of a woman, probably eight months pregnant, shot in the stomach.  There were also butchered infants. Schoolgirls and elderly women have been raped and then murdered. Ears had been severed to remove ear rings, bracelets had been torn from arms and rings from fingers.

    Journalists Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre had obtained a dossier of 1948 British Mandate criminal investigation into Deir Yassin. According to the dossier, one woman among others described being sexually assaulted while “other women around me were being raped, too.” (Statement of Safiyeh Attiyeh, dossier 179/110/17 GS, “Secret,” quoted in Collins and Lapierre, O Jerusalem! 275,276).  According to Collins and Lapierre, the British investigation was corroborated by physical evidence obtained through medical examination of the survivors.

    On hearing of the atrocities committed at Deir Yassin the Haganah commander, David Shaltiel, insisted that Irgun and Lehi terrorists never leave the village before burying all the dead. The Zionist terrorist groups refused the order and left the village, so a burial crew was sent to do the job. They hauled about 70 bodies to a quarry, piled them in a heap, poured gasoline and set them ablaze. But when the fire did not do a thorough job, they used bulldozers to fill the quarry with dirt to bury the bodies. (Milstein, Out of Crisis Comes Decision, p. 273; Milstein, “Deir Yassin”)

    In an attempt to boost their popularity the members of the Zionist Jewish terrorist groups of Irgun and Lehi loaded about twenty five Palestinian men, women and children into trucks, stripped them naked, and paraded them victoriously through the Jewish Zakhron Yosef quarter in Jerusalem, then they drov back into a stone quarry in Deir Yassin and executed them in cold blood. Harry Levin, a Haganah broadcaster and future Israeli diplomat, recorded seeing “three trucks driving slowly up and down King George V Avenue bearing men, women and children, their hands above their heads, guarded by Jews armed with sten-guns and rifles.” (Levin, Jerusalem Embattled, 57)

    Fifty five children, who survived the massacre, were dumped at the Mendelbaum Gate in Jerusalem. Some of them knocked on the door of Palestinian Jerusalemite Hind Al-Husseini seeking shelter. After hearing about the massacre Al-Husseini rushed to find the rest of the children deciding to care for all of them. She turned her grandfather’s mansion into an orphanage and school calling it Dar Al-Tifl Al-Arabi (Home of the Arab Child). Al-Husseini dedicated her whole life to the orphans of Deir Yassin and to other Palestinian children.

    Addressing the Security Council meeting as the chairman of NAM Coordinating Center, Mohammad Khazaei emphasized that “the [NAM] movement is deeply concerned about the brutal and ruthless actions taken by Zionist regime against the Palestinian people, and condemns its continued settlements building [in the occupied territory].”

    He also added that due to the worsening situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories and because of repressive and violent apartheid regime imposed [on Palestinians], a delegation led by the Islamic Republic of Iran, as the Chairman of NAM, had met with the UN Secretary General and the President of the UN Security Council last month and had voiced the NAM concerns about deteriorating conditions and illegal detention of thousands of Palestinians in Israeli prisons.

    He continued: “we relay our [NAM] strongest protest for the brutal and ruthless actions taken by Zionist regime against the civilian demonstrators, the prisoners and continued settlement building, the apartheid wall and colonization of the Palestinian territories to their Excellencies [of the UN].”

    Khazaei said: “Apartheid regime with disregard for international law and the demands of the international community, is threatening a prospect of a just and peaceful solution through malicious behavior, provocative and illegal actions.”

    “NAM members call the UN Security Council for taking immediate action and sending a clear message to Israeli regime to halt all illegal practices and stress its [Apartheid regime] compliance with international regulations,” Khazaei added.

    He also answered baseless accusations against Iran, by the Zionist representative and said: “The Islamic Republic of Iran has declared officially that it is committed to the principles of the UN charter that prohibits any threat or the use of force against another UN member. But the regime that has hundreds of nuclear warheads and long dark history of terrorist activities, is better to be silent and do not threaten other countries and adhere to international law and should show some respect to the UN charter.”

    Sixty-five years on, Israeli President Shimon Peres still denies the existence of the indigenous population of Palestine.

    In a regal interview he gave the Israeli press on the eve of the state’s ” Independence Day,” Shimon Peres, the current president of Israel, said the following:

    “I remember how it all began. The whole state of Israel is a millimeter of the whole Middle East. A statistical error, barren and disappointing land, swamps in the north, desert in the south, two lakes, one dead and an overrated river. No natural resource apart from malaria.     This fabricated narrative, voiced by Israel’s number one citizen and spokesman, highlights how much the historical narrative is part of the present reality. This presidential impunity sums up the reality on the eve of the 65th commemoration of the Nakba, the ethnic cleansing of historic Palestine. The disturbing fact of life, 65 years on, is not that the figurative head of the so-called Jewish state, and for that matter almost everyone in the newly-elected government and parliament, subscribe to such views. The worrying and challenging reality is the global immunity given to such impunity.

    Peres’ denial of the native Palestinians and his reselling in 2013 of the landless people mythology exposes the cognitive dissonance in which he lives: he denies the existence of approximately twelve million people living in and near to the country to which they belong. History shows that the human consequences are horrific and catastrophic when powerful people, heading powerful outfits such as a modern state, denied the existence of a people who are very much present.

    This denial was there at the beginning of Zionism and led to the ethnic cleansing in 1948. And it is there today, which may lead to similar disasters in the future — unless stopped immediately.

    Cognitive dissonance
    The perpetrators of the 1948 ethnic cleansing were the Zionist settlers who came to Palestine, like Polish-born Shimon Peres, before the Second World War. They denied the existence of the native people they encountered, who lived there for hundreds of years, if not more. The Zionists did not possess the power at the time to settle the cognitive dissonance they experienced: their conviction that the land was people-less despite the presence of so many native people there.

    They almost solved the dissonance when they expelled as many Palestinians as they could in 1948 — and were left with only a small minority of Palestinians within the Jewish state.

    But the Zionist greed for territory and ideological conviction that much more of Palestine was needed in order to have a viable Jewish state led to constant contemplations and eventually operations to enlarge the state.

    With the creation of “Greater Israel” following the conquest of the West Bank and Gaza in 1967, the dissonance returned. The solution however could not easily be resolved this time by the force of ethnic cleansing. The number of Palestinians was larger, their assertiveness and liberation movement were forcefully present on the ground, and even the most cynical and traditionally pro-Israel actors on the international scene recognized their existence.

    The dissonance was resolved in a different way. The land without people was any part of the greater Israel the state wished to Judaize in the pre-1967 boundaries or annex from the territories occupied in 1967. The land with people was in the Gaza Strip and some enclaves in the West Bank as well as inside Israel. The land without people is destined to expand incrementally in the future, causing the number of people to shrink as a direct consequence of this encroachment.

    Incremental ethnic cleansing
    This incremental ethnic cleansing is hard to notice unless one contextualizes it as a historical process. The noble attempt by the more conscientious individuals and groups in the West and inside Israel to focus on the here and now — when it comes to Israeli policies — is doomed to be weakened by the contemporary contextualization, not the historical one.

    Comparing Palestine to other places was always a problem. But with the murderous reality in Syria, Iraq and elsewhere, it becomes an even more serious challenge. The last closure, the last political arrest, the last assault, the last murder of a youth are horrific crimes, but pale in comparison to nearby or far-away killing fields and areas of colossal atrocities.

    Societies perhaps are best judged by how they treat prisoners, their most disadvantaged and children. On March 20, Israeli soldiers mass arrested about 30 children. Obama arrived the same day. Every child passing Tareq Bin Zeyad street was seized. They were heading for school in Hebron.

    They were taken to Kiryat Arba police station. They were interrogated with no adult present. Israel’s Youth Law requires it. Shin Bet pays it no heed. Children are isolated from parents. They’re terrorized. It’s standard Israeli practice.

    Targeted children committed no crimes. An Israeli army spokeswoman said soldiers “operated in the area today in order to contain rock hurling at security forces (following an increase in) rioting.”

    At least 14 were aged 11 or younger. Some were young as 8. Israel treats children like adults. International law is clear. A child is anyone under age 18. State Parties are legally bound to treat them accordingly.

    Principle 1 of the UN Declaration of the Rights of the Child says:

    They’re entitled to special protections and opportunities. It’s to help them develop physically, mentally, morally, spiritually, and socially. It’s so they’ll do it under conditions of freedom and dignity.

    They include the right to life, an adequate standard of living, healthcare, education, leisure, safety and peace. For over four decades, Israel systematically denied Palestinians all rights.

    On March 31, Haaretz headlined “The IDF must stop arresting children,” saying:

    On March 20, Israeli soldiers “ambushed and arrested” Palestinian children. At least 18 were under age 12. They’re below “the minimum age at which they can legally be held responsible for a crime.”

    “This large-scale roundup was arbitrary.” Soldiers grabbed every child they saw. First and second-graders aged 8 or younger were taken.

    Doing so was reprehensible. International law forbids it. So does Israeli law. Arrests came days after a UNICEF report. It’s titled “Children in Israeli Military Detention.”

    It sharply criticized Israel. It said around 700 Palestinian children aged 12 – 17 are arrested annually. It’s about two per day. Thousands have been mistreated. They’re terrorized. They’re harshly interrogated. Doing so “amount(s) to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.”

    The Convention on the Rights of the Child mandates that they be kept safe from harm. Article 4 states:

    Hunger Striking for Liberation, Justice and Dignity
    Samer Issawi’s a Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine activist. In April 2004, he was wrongfully arrested. He committed no crime.

    He was sentenced to 30 years imprisonment. In October 2011, he was released. He and over 1,000 other Palestinian political prisoners were freed. Israel did so in exchange for Gilad Shalit.
     -
    Harassment followed. Israel gave him no peace. He was arbitrarily detained numerous times. His sister Shireen said it was three or more times monthly. Each time he was harshly interrogated. He knew perhaps what was coming.
     -
    Months later he was rearrested. Israeli deals aren’t worth the paper they’re written on. Terms are violated with impunity. Samer’s hunger striking in protest. He hasn’t eaten for over 250 days.

    FreeSamerIssawi.org provides background information. It offers action alerts and more. It quotes him saying: ”Your solidarity gives me the power to continue my hunger strike until I achieve my demand of freedom.” ”It strengthens my steadfastness because it makes me realize that I’m not alone in the battle for freedom and dignity.”

    Youth Against Settlements posted his Hunger Speech. It’s reproduced in full below.

    He was the first Jerusalem ID card holder rearrested after his October 2011 release. Seven or more others were also. They’re subject to Military Order 1651, Article 186, persecution. It authorizes a special military committee to arbitrarily order their full sentences completed. It can do so based on secret evidence or none at all.

    Israel operates extrajudicially. International laws are spurned. Palestinians have no rights. They’re collectively punished. They’re arbitrarily arrested, imprisoned and tortured. Thousands languish in Israel’s gulag. It’s one of the world’s worst. Western journalists ignore it. Lawless imprisonment, torture and other forms of abuse are suppressed. It’s commonplace scoundrel media practice.

    On July 1, 2012, Samer was rearrested. He was held 28 days at Moscobiya Detention Center. He was isolated. He was tortured and abused. For 23 days, he was denied legal counsel.

    He’s wrongfully charged. Israel claims he violated terms of his conditional release. He did no such thing. Later allegations suggested involvement in establishing terror cells. When no evidence exists, Israel invents it.

    On February 21, 2013, Jerusalem’s Magistrate Court sentenced him to an additional eight months in prison. Doing so extends his original 30 year sentence.

    On August 1, he began hunger striking. He’s doing so for liberation, justice and dignity. He demands his immediate release. He has every right to do so. Israel doesn’t care if he lives or dies. Police states operate that way. Israel’s one of the worst.

    Western journalists largely ignore Samer. London’s Guardian was an exception. It proves the rule. It gave him op-ed space. He headlined “We are fighting for all Palestinians,” saying:

    “My story is no different from that of many other young Palestinian(s).” They’ve lived “their whole lives under Israeli occupation.”

    At age 17, Samer was arrested. He was imprisoned for two years. In his early 20s, he was rearrested. He was sentenced to 30 years for justifiable resistance. ”I am not the first member of my family to be jailed on my people’s long march towards freedom,” he said. “My grandfather, a founding member of the PLO, was sentenced to death by the British Mandate authorities, whose laws are used by Israel to this day to oppress my people; he escaped hours before he was due to be executed.”

    Samer explained why he began hunger striking. He’ll continue doing so “until victory or martyrdom. This is my last remaining stone to throw at the tyrants and jailers in the face of the racist occupation that humiliates our people.”

    His struggle isn’t for himself alone. It’s for thousands of others like him. He called Gazans much worse off than himself. They’re isolated and brutally attacked. Thousands died or were injured. Israel shows no mercy.

    With its sandy beaches and sumptuous seafood, it could be a holiday resort. But life in Gaza, post-Israeli sanctions and with 50 per cent unemployment, has never been more difficult. Alistair Dawber meets the people trying to survive on the Palestinian coast.

    The guide books warn that it’s very unstable and that tourists shouldn’t go there; the Foreign Office tells Brits that there’s a high threat from terrorism – don’t visit any part of the territory, it says, and if you do, there is no ‘our man’ there to help you out.

    In truth, it is pretty difficult to get into Gaza anyway. Unless you are a journalist or work for an NGO, the likelihood is that you will get stopped at Israel’s airport-terminal-like border post at Erez, which governs who is allowed to enter the Palestinian territory and, more importantly in Israeli eyes, who is allowed out.

    But once you do get permission to go to Gaza, you realise that it is not like anywhere else. After getting the necessary stamps in your passport, you take a long walk through an 800-metre or so long cage, overlooked by Israeli army gun posts and balloons fixed with cameras that keep an eye over what’s going on. Locals call it “the world’s biggest prison”, and it’s not difficult to understand why.

    You eventually arrive at the first of two checkpoints, controlled by the Palestinian Authority and the moderate Fatah faction. Fatah doesn’t run Gaza, but since Hamas, which is in charge, does not recognise Israel, it will not inform the Israelis on their side of the border that you are coming back.

    To think that Gaza City (the Palestinians refer to both the city and the 10km x 40km territory by the same name) is just a few kilometres from modern-day Israel is remarkable. It is like plenty of other Arab towns, just poorer, and after November’s eight-day war between Hamas and Israel, many buildings in the city centre lie in ruins, like collapsed wedding cakes, after being hit by missiles.

    Gaza is about 5,000 years old and one of the world’s oldest cities. In that time it has been both a thriving port and, as it is today, a sprawling mess of refugee camps and poverty. According to the United Nations, 1.5 million people call it home, making Gaza one of the most densely populated areas on the planet. Of the 1.5 million inhabitants, 1.1 million are refugees; those who lived in what is now Israel before 1948 refuse to give up the belief that one day they’ll return to their former homes.

    The UN predicts that by 2020, the population will be more than 2 million, and that GDP per capita of about $2,700 by 2015 is less than what people were earning in 1990. Hospitals need an extra 800 beds now and, by 2020, an additional 1,000 doctors and 2,000 nurses.

    But why is life in Gaza so difficult? It is not hard to imagine the place as a thriving Mediterranean resort: the white beaches are gorgeous and the seafood – such as the tuna served to us on the beach by the fisherman Rachad al-Hisi – is peerless.
