  Amid reports of a US plan for a military invasion of Syria under the pretext of securing the country’s chemical weapons, a top US intelligence officials has emphasized that collapse of the Syrian government would constitute “a huge strategic loss to Iran.”

  In remarks made on Thursday before the US Senate Armed Services Committee, Director of American National Intelligence James Clapper refused to publicly comment on British and French claims about the use of chemical weapons in Syria, described by US President Barack Obama as a “game changer,” but alleged that the Damascus government “appears quite willing to use chemical weapons against its own people,” The Los Angeles Times reports on Friday.

  Making such claims appear to be part of a widely suspected US effort to prepare the grounds for a military occupation of Syria with the excuse of “securing” the country’s alleged chemical weapons.

  This is while the US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is heading to the Middle East next week to discuss the Syrian situation and also to finalize American weapons sales to Israel, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates with the stated objective of confronting what Washington claims as “the Iran threat.”

  The daily further reported on Thursday that the US military is deploying a contingent of 200 troops to Jordan’s border with Syria to prepare for a major invasion into the country, involving 20,000 American troops. Pointing to Obama’s earlier suggestions that any use of chemical weapons by Syria would prompt a major US reaction against the country, the report cites unnamed US officials as saying that “there is no consensus within the US intelligence community about the possible use of chemical weapons in Syria,” confirming recent claims made by Britain and France.

  Moreover, in his remarks at the US Senate Clapper said, “We receive many claims of chemical warfare use in Syria each day, and we take them all seriously and we do all we can to investigate them. We can’t provide additional details on these efforts in this setting to protect the fragile critical intelligence we need to assess the situation, but we certainly – we can talk about this in closed session.”

  Clapper further confirmed many reports about the rising influence of the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front among opposition militant gangs fighting to overthrow  the government of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad, saying that members of the group “are present in 13 of the 14 provinces… and are starting to establish municipal services, provide humanitarian aid, food, hospitals and sharia law courts.”“That is a great concern,” he added.

  Clapper, however, also expressed concerns that the foreign-backed unrest in Syria is destabilizing neighboring Jordan and Lebanon, the report says.

  Syria has been gripped by a deadly unrest since March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of government forces, have been killed in the violence.
  Damascus says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.

  In testimony before the US Senate Armed Forces Committee on Wednesday, top US defense officials announced that they are deploying 200 troops of the 1st Armored Division to Jordan. They will establish headquarters near the Syrian-Jordanian border and plan for a rapid build-up, involving 20,000 or more US troops, awaiting orders from the White House to invade Syria.

  A US invasion force would reportedly include Special Forces troops and regular units preparing for operations inside Syria, as well as air defense units guarding against possible retaliatory Syrian air strikes on Jordan.

  US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel told the Senate committee that these deployments are part of “robust military planning for a range of contingencies,” carried out by the United States and its European and Middle Eastern allies.

  At the same time, Washington is carrying out an international diplomatic offensive setting the stage for war with the Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad. The topic of US military operations against Syria will reportedly be on the agenda of US Secretary of State John Kerry’s discussions in Turkey this weekend, of General Martin Dempsey’s talks with Chinese officials next week, and of Hagel’s upcoming talks with military officials in Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates.

Hagel said that a US intervention in Syria “could have the unintended consequence of bringing the United States into a broader regional conflict or proxy war.” He noted that this “could embroil the US in a significant, lengthy, and uncertain military commitment.”

  He detailed the streams of cash Washington is pouring into the anti-Assad opposition, including $117 million for “communications and medical equipment” as well as undisclosed US State Department and US Agency for International Development funding. Hagel explained, “The goal is to strengthen those opposition groups that share the international community’s vision for Syria’s future and minimize the influence of extremists.”

  The Arabic-language daily Lebanese newspaper Addiyar reports that Syria has moved troops to the Israel-occupied Golan Heights, the Lebanese Army has reinforced its southern outposts and Jordan has positioned troops on the Jordan River border with Israel, according to The Voice of Russia.

  DEBKAfile reports that the Russian fleet in the Mediterranean is also on high alert. Its military sources claim that “Turkish units on the Syrian border are on high preparedness although Ankara played down the reports of the Israeli air strike in Syria, uncomfortable over the fact that the Israeli Air Force was the first external power to intervene directly in the Syrian conflict.”

The United Nations issued an urgent appeal for funds to help the refugees in the northern Jordanian camp of Zaatari, which was almost entirely flooded on Wednesday, leaving residents to battle mud and sub-zero temperatures. “The next 72 hours will be a critical test of our ability to meet the basic needs of children and their families at Zaatari” UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Jordan representative, Dominique Hyde said in a statement yesterday. But students in countries battered by snow, rain and bitter winds got a break as authorities ordered schools and universities closed in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Israel and in some towns in Iraqi Kurdistan.

The electricity workers are on strike, and they’re not letting anyone fix the problem.” A Beirut international airport weather expert said the storm is the worst ever to have hit Lebanon while other met officials in the region said it was the worst in 10 years. Media reports said the cold weather originated in Russia, with one daily dubbing the storm “Olga,” and authorities urged citizens to remain indoors. In Jerusalem, at least 10 centimetres (four inches) of snow blanketed the Holy City as dawn broke, turning the pine-covered hills into what looked like an Alpine ski resort picture postcard.

  Last night the Senate voted 92-6 for an amendment that requires the Department of Defense to supply to the Congress a report on what military activities would be required to deny the government of Bashar al Assad the use of airpower against opposition forces in Syria. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), the only member of the Senate to speak against the amendment, said that, in short, it requires the President to submit to Congress a plan for a no-fly zone. First, he pointed out, there’s no certainty that “the Syrian rebels will be freedom-loving, tolerant, constitution-toting believers in a republican form of government or whether they will institute an Islamic republic that will have no tolerance for Christians and no tolerance for people of any other faith.” Second, he argued, it’s not a good idea for the Congress to get involved in the making of plans for military operations, as that is properly in the purview of the executive branch.

  The amendment contains a provision which states that nothing in it will be construed as an authorization for the use of force against Syria, but that is little more than a fig leaf. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), the chief sponsor of the amendment, assured the Senate that if military action were to be taken, for example, against Syria’s chemical weapons arsenal, Congress would have to be involved; therefore, all the amendment does is provide information to the defense committees of the House and Senate. Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) made clear his preference while covering his ass. “To me — and I speak only personally, and I do so with respect — getting involved in this on behalf of the opposition in Syria has been now for 18 months as close to a no-brainer as America ever has the opportunity to get involved in in foreign policy,” he said. As for a no-fly zone, he noted that there are many options for imposing it, including using Patriot missile batteries in Turkey and Jordan to blast Syrian planes out of the air, and attacking Syrian air bases with missiles fired from ships offshore. But Syria is not Lieberman’s only target. If Assad goes down, he said, “Iran and its radical regime suffers a body blow.”

  Whether anybody in the Senate wants to say so or not, the possible actions that the amendment proposes to be studied would be acts of war, and President Obama has already demonstrated a propensity for engaging in acts of war without the Constitutionally- and statutorily-required Congressional actions.

  Having taken over several key Arab nations following the so-called Arab Spring, the Muslim Brotherhood now appears to be launching an assault on Jordan. The National Front for Reform, led by former Jordanian Prime Minister and Intelligence chief Ahmad Obeidat, the Muslim Brotherhood, and a youth movement called “November Rising,” are calling for protests and demonstrations to undermine the powers of King Abdullah II.

  Protests began immediately after the price of fuel was raised in mid-November. The price hikes include a 54% increase in the cost of gas cylinders used for cooking and heating. Much of the unrest since mid-November has hit impoverished towns across the country of 7 million.

The protesters called for the removal of Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour and urged citizens to rise up against the price rises.

  The show was on the theme of a recent paper by National War College professor Michael Mazarr, that the current U.S. strategic posture is unsustainable. Mazarr was a guest on the show, along with former Obama national security adviser Gen. James Jones and Washington Post columnist David Ignatius.

  Host Rose asked Brzezinski how ‘strategic unsustainability’ applied to Syria. He replied:
  -
  “[We must consider] … what are the prospects, perhaps, of that war rapidly spreading. Syria is next door to Iraq. Iraq is on the verge of a breakdown between the Sunnis and the Shi’ites, into a civil war. Syria is also on the brink, on the edge, of the Kurds, and their role in the region. It could be very, very destabilizing, if the war started spreading. There is, of course, Iran next door, which could become in some fashion involved. In brief, I have the feeling, that it’s not exactly within the realm of our means, of our resources, or compatible with our recent experience, to enter the fray, without thinking very seriously, about the likelihood that if we enter into it, particularly if we enter into it — because we’re not exactly popular in the Middle East these days — the result will be a much wider war, with really serious consequences then for Turkey, and perhaps for Jordan and Saudi Arabia, and because of its economic consequences, for Europe. So I’m afraid that the word I tend to emphasize in this context is ‘prudence,’ rather than ‘engagement.’”

  When rose spoke on the topic of arming the opposition, Brzezinski interrupted, “You can’t start supplying arms to someone, without becoming engaged in the consequences of that! You can’t maintain that kind of sealed detachment from the supply of arms, and eventually engagement in the process. Especially if the supply of arms itself creates temptations to spread that war.”

  Later in the show, Mazarr described how the Obama Administration was groping toward a Syria policy in the new paradigm, potentially arming opposition groups, and a variety of similar steps, “but they’re going to be very messy, and they’re not going to satisfy a lot of advocates of short-term action, and we’re going to have to keep at them for a long period of time. It’s not going to be as clean as advocates of intervention had once thought.” Rose, off camera, said: “Zbig, you’re smiling as you heard him say that. What does that smile mean?” The camera shifted to Brzezinski, who chuckled, and smiling broadly, responded,

  ” Well, I just don’t understand how we can get involved in supporting and arming, and thus intensifying, the makings of a civil war, without thinking as to how long it may last, how much blood will it consume, how deeply we’ll have to become engaged, and how it might spread. This is an extremely volatile region. You have to think of it, not just Syria, which is more that 20 million people. Yes, 30 thousand have been killed, but it’s 20 million people, and most of the 20 million people are still controlled by the government. So we’re going to try to overthrow that. So we’re going to make that civil war more intense, more extensive, more bloody.

  “And, it will affect the neighborhood, because it will ignite the Sunni-Shi’ite conflict. It will destabilize Jordan. It’s already destabilizing Lebanon. It might draw in the Turks. Are the Turks prepared to lunge into Syria? Maybe they would like us to clean up Syria, but we have to ask ourselves about the consequences, if we try. Are we prepared to do it seriously, or are we just going to provide arms, as it progressively gets worse? I think after ten years in Afghanistan, after the mess in Iraq, we better think calmly and coldly about this issue.

  To Rose’s question, ‘So, we do nothing?’, Brzezinski said there are a lot of other things we can do, and advocated working with the Russians and Chinese to develop a viable solution to be presented to the Assad government as something workable — rather than dictating to them our ideas and then denouncing their non-acceptance of them.

  Gen. Jones said, well, we have to figure out what we can do and how, and Brzezinski rejoined, “And I’m saying, let’s see if we can still do it with the international community with us, and I think that having the Russians and the Chinese is not yet to be excluded. We can’t really rely on the advice of the French and the British, because they are the architects of the mess that is now beginning to collapse.” (Emphasis added.)

  Brzezinski also expresses deep skepticism about our alliance with the Saudis: “We have to be very careful about Saudi Arabia, because the Saudis are involved right now in fanning Sunni-Shiite conflict in Syria. Is that really in our interest? Are we really supposed to be supporting that?”

  We are at a very dangerous crossroads.
  US and British troops are now stationed in Jordan on Syria’s southern border.  Meanwhile, Turkish troops are being deployed on Syria’s Northern border.

  The official story conveyed by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta at a meeting of defense ministers is that allied troops from the US and Britain are working under a “humanitarian” mandate with the Amman government to monitor alleged chemical and biological weapons sites in Syria as well as help Jordan with the influx of refugees.

  A report of the Israeli Intelligence News Service Debka points to “the real reason” of allied troop deployments:

  “US troops sent to the Jordan-Syria border are helping build a headquarters in Jordan to bolster its military capabilities in case violence spills over from Syria, suggesting deepening US military intervention in the Syrian conflict.”

  The deployment of allied troops on Syria’s southern border are coordinated with actions taken by Turkey and its allies on Syria’s Northern border. Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has demanded the support of NATO against Syria under the doctrine of collective security.

  “We will do what needs to be done if our border is violated again,” he told reporters following  a meeting  in Istanbul with German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle

  Foreign Minister Davutoglu on Saturday pointed to the alleged violation of Turkey’s border by Syria as a violation of NATO’s borders. Under  Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, an attack on one member state of the Atlantic Alliance is considered as an attack against all NATO member states.

  “In this context, we expect the support of our allies”  said Foreign Minister Davutoglu, intimating that both Germany and other member states of the Atlantic Alliance should act to to defend Turkey under the doctrine of Collective  Security:

  “if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence … will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith  individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area… (See full text of Article 5  of the Washington Treaty, April 1949)

  Americans have been told that 150 troops have been sent to Jordan to help with refugee problems from Syria.Britain is doing the same. A hundred and fifty can be “150” or it can be 800, two countries can be a dozen.

  Combine this with the Turkish moves, forcing down a Syrian airliner flying out of Russia, handcuffing and abusing passengers, bizarre tales of imaginary electronics, a brazen confrontation, not just with Syria but Russia, a major and quite relentless nuclear power, and the desperation of the failures to crush Syria according to a long-established timetable become clear.

  Intelligence agencies analyze patterns, making up a mosaic that reveals intentions. Our mosaic includes recent claims by the US that Iraq is now the home for a massive new Al-Qaeda force, one made up entirely of former Ba’athists that had been in the pay of the US.

  Our source on this is the fleet’s then chief political officer and former presidential advisor Gwyneth Todd, who was, last year, subject to a kidnap/assassination attempt by US government personnel. Ms. Todd is living in Australia, married to a Defense official, the mother of three.  Silencing her, for some reason, had become a priority.

  Adding to the “witches brew” of plots against Syria is the corridor Israel has established across Jordan and Iraq to supply their new airbase at Mosul in Iraq’s Kurdish region. Now the Israeli papers report a “massive air defense exercise” involving the United States, with naval forces to be stationed in the Eastern Mediterranean.

  Our first serious question is the troops in Jordan.  There is no rationale for the US, Britain and other NATO powers to use Special Operations forces to provide “humanitarian services” to refugees.  The United Nations does this as do other NGO’s and, of course, the government of Jordan, which has funds available by agreement, from Saudi Arabia.The troops, minimally, are involved in intelligence gathering, interviewing refugees, but, additionally, are establishing a foothold for a larger potential force in the immediate future.

  Similarly, the current and unsubstantiated misrepresentation of sectarian strife in Iraq, is hardly proof of a “massive” Al-Qaeda cell planning attacks on the United States, as expressed by extremist elements in the American press, more honestly, much of the American press.

  Forces Fortify Border, Prepare for Chemical Weapons Attacks
  Why on earth war-torn Syria would even consider invading Jordan is unclear, but the US troops on the ground in Jordan are apparently spending all their time preparing for that eventuality anyhow, at least according to Jordanian officials familiar with the situation.

  The 150 US troops are deployed in a base on the outskirts of Amman, and have apparently been spending time on the dual goals of reinforcing the Jordanian side of the border with Syria, and preparing for the possibility of a chemical weapons attack.
  -
  Which seems enormously unlikely, as Syria has repeatedly said that they will only use their chemical weapon arsenal in retaliation for a foreign invasion. The more plausible explanation is the one raised when the US deployment was first revealed, that the troops are actually planning for a raid into Syria to seize the nation’s chemical weapons.

  Though there has been some spillover of the Syrian Civil War into Jordan, most of the fighting now is centering on the northern frontier of Syria, along the border with Turkey.

  The UK military has deployed its personnel to the Kingdom of Jordan, where US special operation forces have been preparing the ground for a military onslaught against neighboring Syria under the disguise of training Jordanian forces.

  The deployment of British troops to Jordan and the presence of an initial contingent of 150 US military planners there could raise the possibility of a “mission creep” as the crisis in Syria turns to become a proxy war, with terrorists fighting the popular government of President Bashar al-Assad receiving direct support from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar and indirect backing from the US and its NATO allies.

  Jordan has confirmed the presence of both US and UK military personnel on its soil, claiming that they are there to assist them develop techniques to protect civilians in case of a fallout from the civil war in Syria.

  This is while that the protests in Syria, from the very outset, were the result of a covert US-NATO intelligence operation geared towards triggering social chaos, with the ultimate goal of discrediting the Syrian government of President Bashar Assad and destabilizing Syria.

  Terrorist attacks inside Syria are carried out by trained gunmen and snipers including mercenaries who are tasked with the indiscriminate killing of men and women and children as part of a US-NATO-Israeli initiative which supports the formation of “an armed entity” operating inside Syria.

  Meanwhile, security sources have already confirmed that agents from the UK’s foreign spying apparatus MI6 and the US’ Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) were already inside Syria assessing the situation and talking to dissident soldiers about how best they can give terrorists weapons and communications tools they need.

  Britain’s Ministry of Defense (MoD) has confirmed that it has been “drawing up secret plans for a NATO-sponsored no-fly zone over Syria [in coordination with its allies], but first it needs backing from UN Security Council”. According to these secret plans, “fighting in Syria could be bigger and bloodier than the battle against Gaddafi” [in Libya].

  British Special Army Forces (SAF) along with forces of ally countries such as France, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, have already been operating inside Syria in blatant violation of international laws and regulations. British and French Special Forces have been actively training members of the so-called Free Syrian Army (FSA) from a base in Turkey.

  British MI6 spies have also been training terrorists in urban warfare as well as supplying them with weapons and equipment. A MoD spokesman said that “Jordan was a key partner in Britain’s regional policy for the Middle East, which included efforts to curtail the Syria crisis.” “This work and relationship includes the deployment of UK military personnel to Jordan on a regular basis,” he added.

  The Vice Presidential debate was this week, and it was supposed to get into the real down and dirty numbers.  Vice Presidents rarely make a difference in the outcome of a Presidential election, so who cares who won.  I am focusing on what is not said, and both parties conveniently leave out the $85 billion a month the Fed is printing to bail out bankers and suppress interest rates.  Both parties get plenty of help from the mainstream media not talking about the real issues.  For example, yesterday’s USA Today ran a piece titled “Analysis: Recovery begins to look normal.”  This is analysis?  You’ve got to be kidding me.  What is “normal” about unprecedented money printing that will total more than $1 trillion a year and interest rates frozen to near 0% until 2015?  If the U.S. was in a real so-called “recovery,” the Fed would not be printing $85 billion a month in “open-ended” (unlimited) QE, or what most people simply call money printing. By the way, the IMF said this week it sees an “alarmingly high” risk of a much deeper worldwide downturn.  I guess the IMF doesn’t see a recovery either.

  Some other stories not getting much coverage are the Turkey/Syrian border skirmishes and the U.S. sending troops to Jordan.  The Turkey/Syrian situation appears to be getting worse.  They have been trading artillery shots on Syria’s northern border, and now Turkey forced a passenger plane to land in its capital on suspicion of carrying military cargo.   It looks like this conflict could widen a war in the Middle East.

  Now, the U.S. is sending troops to Syria’s southern border.  Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said it is to strengthen the Jordanian military for violence spilling out of Syria.  I think this is an ominous development, and this story was also underreported in the MSM. Join Greg Hunter as he gives his analysis on these stories and more in the Weekly News Wrap-Up.
