  Amidst allegations by a highly placed Colonel in the Chinese army that the U.S. has released a bioweapon in Mainland China, concerns are ramping up that this year’s version of the avian flu, H7N9, may turn into a major pandemic.

  The last few years have seen several false alarms on the pandemic front. Neither the bird flu of 2004 nor the swine flu of 2009-2010 ended up being of much concern, although agencies from the WHO on down certainly created quite a flurry around both of these flu bugs.

  H7N9 has already shown itself to have a high mortality rate, higher in fact than the Spanish flu of 1918, which caused 50 million deaths worldwide. The latest figures show H7N9 as having a mortality rate of 21- 24% . Out of 131 reported cases, thirty-one have died and most remain on the critical list. The bug has already jumped from Mainland China to Taiwan and a number of articles on H7N9 have nervously published the flight paths out of China to the rest of the world, which show how quickly an infected person or persons could create a global pandemic.

  According to Keiji Fukuda, WHO’s assistant director-general for health, security and the environment, “This is definitely one of the most lethal influenza viruses that we have seen so far.”

Of those who have been documented as infected with this flu, several are family members of others who have been infected. As quoted in Quartz on April 18, “The Chinese National Health and Family Planning Commission said on Thursday it could not rule out human-to-human transmission in the case of a Shanghai family—two brothers, at least one of whom has the virus, and their 87-year-old father, who was the first confirmed H7N9 fatality. A husband and wife in Shanghai also both contracted H7N9.”

  In a carefully worded statement (http://www.who.int/csr/don/2013_05_07/en/index.html), WHO has declared: “So far, there is no evidence of sustained human-to-human transmission.” So the fact is that while H7N9 may have already mutated to afford the leap to human-to-human transmission, this has not yet been noted as a regular event.

  According to a report published by The Independent on May 2, scientists are criticizing China for engaging in dangerous influenza virus research. The scientists accuse the Chinese researchers of “appalling irresponsibility” and state there is danger a new laboratory created strain of bird-flu virus mixed with human influenza may escape and create a global pandemic killing millions of people.

  A former British government scientist and president of the Royal Society, Lord May of Oxford, denounced the Chinese effort. “They claim they are doing this to help develop vaccines and such like. In fact the real reason is that they are driven by blind ambition with no common sense whatsoever,” May said.

  “The record of containment in labs like this is not reassuring. They are taking it upon themselves to create human-to-human transmission of very dangerous viruses. It’s appallingly irresponsible,” he added. Lord May’s concern about the new virus, however, ignores other equally dangerous bio lab containment issues in the West.

  In March of this year, the Government Accountability Office warned that federal officials have not developed adequate standards for bio lab design, operation and construction. The GAO reports follows an earlier report stating that the USDA inspector general found numerous violations of regulations in bioterror labs that were ignored for years.   New warnings about poor government standards were issued after a rare Venezuelan virus went missing from a biolab at the University of Texas Medical Branch located on Galveston Island, Texas.   BEIJING (AFP) - Experts from the UN’s health agency are examining whether the H7N9 bird flu virus is spreading among humans, after a cluster of cases among relatives, but downplayed fears of a pandemic Friday.

  “What we don’t know is the size of the iceberg under this tip,” said the World Health Organisation’s representative in China after revealing details of three families who have shown possible human-to-human transmission.

  Michael O’Leary was speaking as 15 global international health experts began a week-long mission in Beijing and Shanghai to investigate the H7N9 bird flu virus, which has killed 17 people and sickened 74 others.

  As questions remain about the virus source and China faces global scrutiny on its handling of the disease, President Xi Jinping was also cited by state media as urging officials to do their utmost to “contain the spread” of H7N9.

  O’Leary said Friday: “The primary focus of the investigation is to determine whether this is in fact spreading at a lower level among humans. But there is no evidence for that so far except in these very rare instances.”

  He said one family in Shanghai had shown evidence of more than one family member being infected with the deadly strain. In the two other clusters, one family member was infected while the other was “clinically similar and presumed H7N9″.

  He said investigators were trying to determine whether the family members were infected with the virus from the same source, or from each other.

  Since China announced nearly three weeks ago that it had found the strain in people for the first time, almost all of the cases have occurred in Shanghai and four nearby provinces while one appeared in Beijing.

  O’Leary also said investigations into the source of the virus were continuing, though the virus is believed to be crossing to humans from birds, prompting mass poultry culls in several cities.

  A link to wild birds remained open to question, with a Chinese Academy of Sciences zoologist saying 15 of 16 cases it tracked occurred along a migratory route, while the State Forestry Administration said 860 wildlife samples had so far tested negative for H7N9.

  O’Leary also said that over 50 percent of those with the virus remembered coming into contact with birds. “As the investigation gets deeper we have found more than half where there is a known contact with poultry,” he said.

  The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention had earlier said 40 percent of patients with H7N9 had not come into contact with poultry. O’Leary stressed again that authorities had offered the WHO unrestricted access in the investigation.

  In 2003 China was accused of trying to cover up the outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, which went on to kill about 800 people worldwide. But it has received praise for its transparent handling of H7N9.

  At a briefing Wednesday, a senior official from China’s Centre for Disease Control and Prevention also stressed that the family clusters did not necessarily indicate that one relative had spread the virus to another.

  “Even though there are a few family cluster cases, it does not mean the virus has the ability to effectively transmit from human to human,” said Feng Zijian, according to the transcript.

  A seven-year-old girl who contracted the strain left hospital on Wednesday, but since then a group of men have been stationed near her home to prevent her from straying too far, the Beijing News said on Friday.

  With no vaccine for the virus for now, some people have turned to traditional Chinese medicine to guard against it, although experts warned that these might only help to treat rather than prevent the disease. A pharmacist surnamed Zhu in Shanghai, where the largest number of cases has been found, said customers had been buying a traditional Chinese herb for colds called banlangen, which they believe gives protection from the virus.

  BEIJING: A day after asking Japan to stop encroaching its territory,  Chinese military today for the first time deployed its naval ships to patrol the islands disputed with Tokyo in the East China Sea.

  This is the first time in recent months China deployed its naval vessels for patrols in the islands waters replacing the marine surveillance vessels, even though some naval ships were seen in the waters earlier.

  A two-vessel fleet of the Chinese People’s Liberation  Army Navy patrolled the territorial waters surrounding the Diaoyu Islands this morning, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

   China calls the islands Diaoyu while Japan refers to them  Senkakus, which were administered by Tokyo till last September after which China started challenging the Japanese hold on the islets.

   Significantly they also conducted open-sea offencive and defencive training as well as exercises of intercepting and searching illegal vessels in the western  Pacific Ocean on Sunday and Monday, it said.

  Missile destroyer  Lanzhou and missile frigate Hengshui, both from the Navy’s Nanhai Fleet, entered the sea area via the Miyako Strait on Tuesday night, the report said.

   Today’s patrol by the Nanhai fleet ships came after vessels from the  PLA Navy’s Beihai Fleet and Donghai Fleet had previously patrolled the Diaoyu Islands waters.

  The influenza A(H7N9) virus is one subgroup among the larger group of H7 viruses that normally circulate among birds.   The new bird flu could be mutating up to eight times faster than an average flu virus around a protein that binds it to humans, a team of research scientists in Shenzhen says.

  Dr He Jiankui, an associate professor at South University of Science and Technology of China, said yesterday that the authorities should be alarmed by the results of their research and step up monitoring and control efforts to prevent a possible pandemic.

  With genetic code of the virus obtained from mainland authorities, the team scrutinised haemagglutinin, a protein that plays a crucial rule in the process of infection. The protein binds the virus to an animal cell, such as respiratory cells in humans, and bores a hole in the cell’s membrane to allow entry by the virus.

  The researchers found dramatic mutation of haemagglutinin in one of the four flu strains released for study by the central government. Nine of the protein’s 560 amino acids had changed. In a typical flu virus, only one or two amino acids could change in such a short period of time, He said.

  “It happened in just one or two weeks. The speed may not have caught up with the HIV, but it’s quite unusual for a flu.”

  The fast mutation makes the virus’ evolutionary development very hard to predict. “We don’t know whether it will evolve into something harmless or dangerous,” He said. “Our samples are too limited. But the authorities should definitely be alarmed and get prepared for the worst-case scenario.”

  The origin of the virus was puzzling due to its novelty, but He’s research suggested some clues that differ from the mainland authorities’ theories.

  His team compared the new virus strain to all other H7N9 viruses identified in Europe and in other Asian countries that were cited by the Ministry of Agriculture as possible origins of the new bird flu, but found them all very different.

  Scientists last night ended a voluntary ban  on creating mutant forms of bird flu, despite warnings that an accidental  release could kill millions of people.

  Research into H5N1 transmission stopped a  year ago amid fears information about how to create potentially dangerous  viruses could be used for bioterrorism. The self-imposed moratorium came after two  teams independently discovered how to mutate the virus so that it could be  transmitted through the air between humans.

  However, other leading scientists condemned  the decision to go ahead with the research, with one warning an ‘accidental  release could wipe out a significant portion of humanity.’

  Forty of the world’s leading flu researchers  voluntarily halted investigations into the airborne transmission of the H5N1  avian flu strain last January, following public outrage over the  work.

  Announcing the decision to resume studies in  a letter published in the journals Science and Nature last night, they said the  work would only be carried out in the most secure sites in countries that agree  it can go ahead.

  That will allow work to start again in key  laboratories in the Netherlands and elsewhere but not yet in the U.S or  U.S.-funded research centres, pending further safety and security guidelines  there.

  Canadian researchers have concluded that the H1N1 flu shot is more dangerous than the flu it purports to protect against. The timing of this study’s release coincided with North American and certain part of Europe preparing to promote massive vaccination efforts on their citizens. Under a propaganda pandemic campaign to fear the public into having the inoculation, this study placed a snag in their plans.

  At the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC) study author Dr. Danuta Skowronski explained that in 2008 a study she co-authored proved that the flu shot caused more physiological issues than the H1N1 flu itself.

  Skowronski explains that “pandemics are infrequent occurrences, but seasonal influenza recurs on an annual basis. It’s a substantial cause of morbidity and mortality and the seasonal vaccine substantially protects against that severe outcome due to seasonal influenza.”

  Vaccinations for the H1N1 are ineffective because the inoculation cannot prevent infection or support the body’s development of immunity. However, having been exposed to the flu gives the human body the antibody build-up that facilitates the actions of the human immune system.

  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a warning last month to parents to have their children vaccinated against H3N2 which is a new strain of flu that the US government is purveying against the public. County fairs and exposure to pigs is being touted as the cause of the contraction of H3N2.

  Tom Skinner, CDC spokesperson said that cases reported involved pigs however, “we’re not seeing any sustained transmission human to human, but we’re keeping an eye out.”

  Skinner added, without substantial evidence, that this new mysterious strain could mutate genes and cause it to be more contiguous. And because of this new strain, vaccinations must be administered to the general public “to keep them safe.”

  More bird flu fear-mongering of an epidemic that never was came to the public last June when it was reported that H5N1 was allegedly spreading “rapidly between humans.”

  This study focused on how an epidemic is created and development of drugs to subvert a pandemic. Mutations enabling H5N1 to transmit human to human shows a genetic difference in this strain when compared to other viruses. When inspected, this strain showed signs of being genetically engineered, according to a research team from Cambridge University.

  A genetically engineered virus being passed off as the validation for mass vaccinations is the hallmark of a bioweapon with an agenda. To validate the threat of bird flu to the public, officials at the Department of Natural Resources in Ontario, Canada decided to massacre hundreds of pelicans, gulls, herons and egrets back in August of this year.

  The dangers of vaccines have been covered by the pharmaceutical corporation’s endless push that public concerns are unfounded. As with the push for young girls to have the Gardasil vaccine, there has not been inconclusive evidence that the vaccine prevent cervical cancer. Furthermore, the infection it claims to protect again, the human papillomavirus (HPV) does not cause cervical cancer. HPV is a co-infection of several bacteria combined (such as Epstein Bar virus and Chlamydia).
