“The Secret Plans for the Euro-Crash” is the title of a detailed article in the Aug. 25 Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung on an exit scenario for life after the euro. Advisors from the business consultancy Capco have already written a 300-page study detailing every step of a euro exit, and lawyers are going from door to door of companies, to explain how subsidiary companies could go bankrupt without affecting the proprietary company, should Greece, for example, leave the euro. But since Spain is in need of the bailout fund, the teams are preparing for a complete breakup of the euro.

Under the subhead “All Plans Are Already in the Drawer,” Alexander Roos from Boston Consulting Group claims that a third of all German corporate executives think that a breakup of the euro into north and south is probable. Although the so-called crisis teams in the various companies have been working out these scenarios for a long time, they still see the breakup from the standpoint of a statistical probability and not from a principled basis.

Apparently, no one is willing to admit that these plans exist, but they are already acting accordingly. Michael Diekmann of Allianz states, “Developments of the last months have increased the risks of a different scenario.” Commerzbank also admits that it is going through different scenarios, and Deutsche Bank simply states “no comment.”

But Deutsche Bank is one of those cutting off their foreign subsidiaries by refinancing them through the national central banks and no longer through the parent company, so that in a breakup both their liabilities on a national level and also their allowances to the central bank would go through the same devaluation. Furthermore, the big players are taking their liquidity out of Europe and renegotiating their derivatives contracts, so that their securities no longer are in Greece, Italy, or Spain (which would obviously default on the contacts), but in places like the City of London, which themselves want to include transferring the Greeks’ sovereign debt to the U.K.

An unconfirmed report has an unidentified administration official saying “the Israelis feel the need to elevate the urgency on the Iranian timeline. They tend to do this from time to time. The Iranians naturally elevate their counter-threats so as to deter an Israeli attack, which would have to be a nuclear attack in order to achieve its goal. What is that goal? It is here that we enter the theatre of the absurd. Such an attack might delay Iran’s legal program of uranium enrichment for only a few years and it might encourage Iran to develop nuclear weaponry. Furthermore, with Israel being the clear aggressor, Iran would occupy the moral high ground. It would be able to counterattack Israel by any and all means of its choosing whenever and wherever it wanted to. It would be able to attack Israel for an open-ended and unlimited period of time. Even if its forces currently are weak and unable to prosecute a conventional war, it would be able over time to mobilize its resources against Israel. Its population would likely rally behind that effort. An Israeli attack might mobilize the more radical elements in Iran and encourage a government that is even less to the liking of Israel than the current one.

Is it worth it to Israelis to be under threat of attack and actual attacks of all sorts and to increase the nuclear threat against their country in return for stopping for a few years what it is legal for Iran to do? Is it worth it for Israel to join the exclusive club of nations that have attacked others with nuclear weapons, consisting at present only of the U.S.? Is it worth it for Israel to provide the very grounds that would make it a pariah among nations and encourage fundamental alterations in the nature of the Jewish state? Is it worth it to the U.S. government to enter a new war and a nuclear war at that when Iran poses no significant threat to U.S. interests? Is it worth it to the U.S. to send the price of oil soaring and to devastate its own and the world’s economy?

Did you know that median household income in the United States is lower today than it was when the last recession supposedly ended? If we are in the middle of an “economic recovery”, how can this possibly be happening? Stunning new statistics compiled by Sentier Research show that the U.S. economy is not nearly as healthy as we have been led to believe. According to the study that Sentier Research has just released, median household income in the United States was sitting at $55,470 back in January 2000. In December 2007, when the recession began, it was sitting at $54,916. In June 2009, when the recession supposedly ended, it was sitting at $53,508. Today, it is sitting at $50,964.

This is a long-term trend that is definitely going in the wrong direction. The fact that median household income in the U.S. is now 4.8 percent lower than it was when the last recession ended is incredibly disturbing, especially since all of the things that we buy on a regular basis just keep going up in price. Food, gas, electricity, car insurance and health insurance all cost a whole lot more today than they did back in the year 2000, and yet median household income has dropped 8.1 percentsince that time. So what does all of this mean? It means that American families ARE getting poorer.

Yes, the stock market has been soaring, corporate profits have set all-time records in recent years and the big Wall Street banks that were showered with bailout money are absolutely thriving. But there has been no economic recovery on “Main Street”.

According to the Sentier Research report mentioned above, incomes have been declining in all geographic regions of the country and in all sectors of the economy….

-Median household income for private sector employees has fallen 4.5 percent since June 2009.
-Median household income for government workers has fallen 3.5 percent since June 2009.
-Median household income for Americans living in the West has fallen 8.5 percent since June 2009.
-Median household income for Americans living in the Northeast has fallen 4.9 percent since June 2009.
-Median household income for Americans living in the South has also fallen 4.9 percent since June 2009.
-Median household income for Americans living in the Midwest has fallen 1.1 percent since June 2009.

Remember, the recession supposedly ended in June 2009. Since that time we have supposedly been in a “recovery”. So if it has seemed to you that American families have been getting poorer it has not just been your imagination.

The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), formed in 1961 during the Cold War, is a group of 120 states and 17 observer states not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc. The NAM held its opening 2012 session yesterday under the new chairmanship of Iran, which succeeded Egypt as the Chair.

Significantly, an Associated Press story in the Washington Post headlined, “Iran opens nonaligned summit with calls for nuclear arms ban”, reported that “Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi opened the gathering by noting commitment to a previous goal from the nonaligned group, known as NAM, to remove the world’s nuclear arsenals within 13 years. ‘We believe that the timetable for ultimate removal of nuclear weapons by 2025, which was proposed by NAM, will only be realized if we follow it up decisively,’ he told delegates.”

Yet the New York Times, which has been beating the drums for war with Iran, just as it played a disgraceful role in the deceptive reporting during the lead-up to the Iraq War, never mentioned Iran’s proposal for nuclear abolition. The Times carried the bland headline on its front page, “At Summit Meeting, Iran Has a Message for the World”, and then went on to state, “the message is clear. As Iran plays host to the biggest international conference …it wants to tell its side of the long standoff with the Western powers which are increasingly convinced that Tehran is pursuing nuclear weapons”, without ever reporting Iran’s offer to support the NAM proposal for the abolition of nuclear weapons by 2025.

Surely the most sensible way to deal with Iran’s nascent nuclear weapons capacity is to call all the nations to the table to negotiate a treaty to ban the bomb. That would mean abolishing the 20,000 nuclear bombs on the planet—in the US, UK, Russia, China, France, India, Pakistan, North Korea and Israel—with 19,000 of them in the US and Russia. In order to get Russia and China to the table, the US will also have to give up its dreams of dominating the earth with missile “defenses” which, driven by corrupt military contractors and a corporate- owned Congress, are currently being planted and based in provocative rings around Russia and China.

The ball is in the U.S. court to make good faith efforts for nuclear abolition. That would be the only principled way to deal with fears of nuclear proliferation. The US must start with a genuine offer for negotiations to finally ban the bomb in all countries, including a freeze on further missile development. It should stop beating up on Iran and North Korea while it hypocritically continues to improve and expand the US arsenal, with tens of billions of dollars for new weapons laboratories and bomb delivery systems, and fails failing to speak out against the nuclear activities of other nations such as the enrichment of uranium in Japan and Brazil and the nuclear arsenal of Israel.
