Primakov Warns of “Very Dangerous” Threat of Israeli Attack on Iran!

    An interview with Yevgeni Primakov, Russia’s former prime minister, foreign minister, and foreign intelligence chief, and the country’s senior diplomatic specialist on the Arab world, appeared in the government newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta today, under the provocative headline, “The Very Near East.” The date of its publication, exactly four years after Georgia’s attack on Russian peacekeeping forces in South Ossetia, underscored Primakov’s sober warning about the prospects for renewed war in Southeast Asia and its strategic implications. He discussed both Syria and Iran.

    Interviewer Vladimir Snegirev asked about the likelihood of “a strike by Israel, with or without the support of the States, against Iran’s nuclear facilities.” Primakov replied, “The United States doesn’t want that to happen now, before the President elections. They are restraining Israel.” But, he went on to say that there are different factions on this matter in both Israel and the USA, making it “difficult to say who will have the upper hand.” Primakov compared the situation with August 2008, when U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice had told Georgian President Michael Saakashvili not to move into South Ossetia, but Saakashvili had relied on a belief he got from contacts with Vice President Dick Cheney, “that NATO would intervene in his support.” Specifically: “Saakashvili thought that he could reach the Roki Tunnel and block it, whereupon Russia would be unable to get its tanks across the mountains. And at that point the Americans would intervene. The Israelis are following the same model. Obama is not the only one they are in contact with. Somebody might be telling them: if you make a strike, then the United States, even if they don’t want to, will support you anyway.”

    Snegirev: “So the probability of such a strike remains? And that presents a danger for this entire, enormous region?”
    Primakov: “It is very dangerous. Because the impact of an air strike — and a ground operation is not at issue — could be miniscule. Within two years Iran will completely recover, exit the NPT with fanfares, and then for sure will build its own weapons of mass destruction.”

    Concerning Syria, Primakov described the situation as “fullscale civil war with the involvement of outside forces.” He mentioned Saudi and Qatari financing of opposition guerrillas, mercenaries, and volunteers from outside of Syria, and Turkish support for the opposition, adding, “And here’s the latest: President Obama has directly ordered the CIA to support the Syrian opposition.” Primakov called these activities “gross interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign nation that presents no threat whatsoever to the United States or anybody else.”

New Israeli Regulations will Deny Palestinians, Immigrants Day in Court !

    Plaintiffs in Israeli courts will no longer be allowed to file a case without presenting a valid passport. Although ostensibly a technical regulation, the measure will make it difficult for thousands of Palestinians and migrants to reach justice. The new rules were approved by Justice Minister Yaakov Neeman, and will come into force next month.

    Those unable to produce the proper identification will be referred to a registrar and a judge, who will then rule on whether the case can go forward. The regulations are likely to affect thousands of cases initiated primarily by two groups – undocumented migrant workers crossing into Israel from Egypt, and Palestinians who live in the West Bank, but have not been issued a Palestinian Authority passport.

    Historically, cases filed by these groups have typically been complaints about Israeli settlers forcibly displacing locals, mistreatment at the hands of the Israeli Defense Forces, and various immigration appeals.

    Oded Feller, a lawyer for the Association for Civil Rights in Israel, has written a public letter to Neeman claiming that the new regulations could use a technicality to deny people access to court – a universal right in Israel, which purportedly should not be dependent on nationality.

    The new rule is an intentional “additive measure” that infringes on already-limited Palestinian rights, says Professor Mazin Qumsiyeh from Bethlehem University. Qumsiyeh says the courts already favor Israeli citizens in court disputes over land rights in the West Bank, lawsuits demanding better working conditions for Palestinians (who work longer hours for smaller wages than Israelis), and complaints about treatment by the army – which often pit the word of an IDF officer against a Palestinian villager.

    “Most Palestinians do not have a passport. Few Palestinians apply for Palestinian Authority passports, which they need to travel outside the country.     Immigrants’ rights have also become a hot topic in Israel against the backdrop of a struggling economy. Over the past few years, the country has become an attractive destination for African migrants, but their presence has produced tension with the settled Israeli population, which accuses them of poor integration and causing an increase in crime. Israel also maintains a blockade of the Gaza Strip, imposed in 2007 after Hamas was elected in legislative elections in the territory. This left its entire population of 1.6 million virtually imprisoned, as Israel controls all but one of the crossings into Gaza, in addition to the airspace, territorial waters and telecommunications into the area.

    On Sunday 5 August a number of unidentified militants carried out an attack in the Egyptian Sinai in which several Egyptian soldiers were killed, and Israel’s border was penetrated. After Iftar as the Egyptian Muslims were breaking their fast, unknown militants killed 16 Egyptian soldiers and stole an Egyptian armoured vehicle. Using a pick-up truck packed with explosives, the militants breached the Egypt-Israel border at the ‘Kerem Shalom’ crossing and subsequently drove approximately one mile into Israel using the armoured vehicle they had commandeered.

    This event brings severe geopolitical repercussions for Egypt, and is characterised by extremely suspicious circumstances. Resultingly we must carefully consider this attack within its proper context.

    Israel had foreknowledge of the attack
    The Israeli military knew in advance that the Sinai attack would occur, which even allowed them to have aircraft defending the area in advance – hence why the armoured vehicle was blown up shortly after crossing the border and the attack was thwarted within 15 minutes of its advent.(1) IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz wasted no time in pointing out that “a large disaster was averted.”

    This begs the question, why did the Israelis not inform the Egyptian military to allow them to prevent the attack in the first instance? The Jewish Telegraphic Agency reports,(2)

    Israeli intelligence had information on the planned attack, which allowed the military to have helicopters in the area to strike the vehicle, an Israel Defense Forces spokesman said Monday. Israel and Egypt remained in close contact during the attack, Barak said, according to reports.

    Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak curiously blamed the attack on an unidentified ‘global’ Jihadi terror group. Although Barak is unable to identify the group, we are supposed to believe his alarmist assertion that it is global in nature. Compulsive liar and Israeli Ambassador to the US, Michael Oren, tried to pin the attack on Iran within hours, stating on his Twitter account,

At the time of writing, the identity of the perpetrator of the Burgas attack is unknown to Bulgarian and US authorities.

    Warships, ground-to-air missiles and drones – Britain is not gearing up for war, but for London’s Summer Olympics. The preparations are calling on all corners of the nation’s defences. But, many fear the measures will pose serious risks to privacy.

    The British military plans to deploy surface-to-air missiles at six sites around London as part of a vast security operation for the July 27-Aug. 12 games. Residents of a London apartment tower went to court in a bid to stop their rooftop being used as a missile base during the Olympic Games, saying the unprecedented deployment could make the building a terrorist target.

    Their lawyer, Marc Willers, told the High Court that the residents had “a fully justified fear that installation or deployment of the missile system on the roof of the Fred Wigg Tower gives rise to the additional risk that the tower itself may become the focus of a terrorist attack.”

    They claim the missiles breach their rights under the European Convention on Human Rights, which protects an individual’s “right to private life and peaceful enjoyment of their home.”

    There will also be warships anchored on the Thames; attack helicopters on standby, and ground-to-air missiles ready to launch. All that, before you even get to the security on the ground. Such measures, however, may not only turn the capital into a city under siege, but simply prove to be ineffective.

    Nick Pickles, director for Big Brother Watch says: “I think it’ll be an absolute tragedy for Britain if the largest part of the Olympics legacy was a surveillance legacy, where we install all this equipment in the name of national security and when the Olympics are over we keep using it”.

    Security is being tightened in and around London in the lead up to the 2012 Olympic games. UK officials spared no expense in trying to turn London into an impenetrable fortress- or at least making it appear so. With the horror of the 7/7 bombings carried out by al-Qaeda still lingering in the minds of Londoners along with the reality that the Olympics have long been an alluring target for terrorist groups-sometimes with tragic results-it is understandable that security officials will spare no expense in guarding the games.  Moreover, it is not surprising that Olympic game attendees will happily sacrifice some of London’s charm and perhaps even some civil liberties in exchange for the comfort of what seems to be a secure environment…even if that means rolling out the 5,000-volt electric fences, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), and surface-to-air missiles.

    London’s added security measures include: As many as 48,000 security forces. 13,500 troops. Surface-to-air missiles stationed on top of residential apartment buildings. A sonic weapon that disperses crowds by creating ‘head-splitting pain.’ Unmanned drones peering down from the skies. A safe zone, cordoned off by an 18-kilometre electrified fence, ringed with trained agents and 55 teams of attack dogs…parking an aircraft carrier right in the Thames…‘scanners, biometric ID cards, number-plate and facial-recognition CCTV systems, disease tracking systems, new police control [centers] and checkpoints.’

    So far, the cost of this operation is totaling nearly $1.6 billion.  With the threat of a terrorist attack topping the list of concerns, can these measures be successful in countering or deterring a terrorist attack?  What good are missile defense batteries against suicide bombers and gunmen?

    Perhaps the reason for the public show of force might be rooted in a doctrine prevalent throughout the Cold War and more recently embraced by counterterrorism (CT) officials: deterrence.  Deterrence may conjure up images of the Cold War and the theory of mutually assured destruction.  Such a dated concept seems to have very limited, if any, applicability for deterring a terrorist attack.  It’s not just the costs or the incredible invasion into people’s privacy. It’s the powers being given to police under the 2006 “London Olympic Games Act” which empowers not only the army and police, but also private security forces to deal with “security issues” using physical force.

    A British photographer who was captured by insurgents in Syria has said that his captors were foreign extremists including several Britons with “not a Syrian in sight”.On July 19, freelance photographer John Cantile, alongside his Dutch colleague Jeroen Oerlemans, was kidnapped in northern Syrian and freed one week later.

    Cantile said he was held in a camp by 30 foreign extremists including some from Britain and Pakistan. He also revealed that some of his captors were “young men with south London accents”.

    “They were aiming their Kalashnikovs at a British journalist, Londoner against Londoner in a rocky landscape that looked like the Scottish Highlands”, said Cantile.

    The British photographer also disclosed that some of the insurgents could not even speak Arabic, with around a dozen of his captors speaking English out of whom nine spoke with London accents.

    I’ll tell you what doesn’t amuse me, though. Here I am in Wales, on my holidays, enjoying the semi-sun, and suddenly I get emails from and Tweets from sensible people on my side of the argument saying: “Help! Help! The BBC has gone mad for this story about the NASA satellite showing that 97 per cent of Greenland has melted and apparently it’s ‘unprecedented’. What do we do?”

The right thing to do on occasions like this, I find, is to head straight for Watts Up With That? Unlike, say, the BBC, or the Guardian, or the Independent or most of the rest of the MSM, WUWT’s posts are grounded in actual science and real world data. And, yep, WUWT makes two very simple points.

    1. 97 per cent of Greenland hasn’t melted. (If it had we’d be underwater by now)

    I’m sure our readers don’t really need to have it pointed out that the melting event did not melt 97% of Greenland’s ice sheet, but rather occurred over 97% of the surface area  of the ice sheet and that the melting event has ended.  We will undoubtedly be treated to that 97% statistic for a long time to come.

    2. “Unprecedented” is not a strictly accurate adjective to describe something that has happened before.

    I had to laugh at the title of their press release, where they cite “Unprecedented Greenland Ice Sheet Surface Melt”,  then contradict themselves when the main researcher goes on to say “melting events of this type occur about once every 150 years on average. With the last one happening in 1889“. Do these guys even read their own press releases? Climatologist Pat Michaels concurs saying: “Apparently NASA should start distributing dictionaries to the authors of its press releases.”

But the broader point to be made is this: don’t believe what the BBC (or NASA or the Royal Society or the Guardian or the Independent or the National Academy of Sciences or the Prince of Wales or Al Gore or any US TV broadcaster that isn’t Fox) tells you about global warming, the environment, climate change, polar bears, sustainability, ocean acidification, glacier melt or Greenland, EVER.
