On the eve of an expected major offensive in Aleppo by the Syrian regime, Turkey has threatened to invade Syria, using the pretext of Kurdish groups seizing control of northern border areas.

Such a move could pitch Ankara directly into war against Syria, after it has long sought to dictate events through control of the opposition Syrian National Congress and Free Syrian Army. This would be done with the full support of the United States.

Al Ahram cited reports in the Turkish media that the US embassy in Ankara and the consulate in Adana in southeast Turkey have “been planning military operations against the Baathist regime in Syria with the knowledge of the Turkish government.”

Large numbers of trucks have been seen coming out of the US airbase at Incirlik, laden with arms for distribution to the Syrian opposition. Turkey’s Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has warned of an impending massacre in Aleppo, close to the Turkish border, and appealed for action. This is combined with ever escalating rhetoric over the “terrorist threat” posed by the Kurds.

In the past fortnight, up to 115 Kurdish fighters have been killed in a south eastern Turkey in military operations, including air strikes near the town of Semdinli. Sunday saw a counter-offensive in which Kurdish forces raided three military posts near the Iraq border that left at least six soldiers and 14 rebels dead. Turkish officials claim to be combating a 200-strong force of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK.

Kurds make up 17 percent of Iraq’s 31 million people, including the semi-autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan, nine percent of Syria’s 21 million population, and seven to ten percent of Iran’s 75 million people.

Turkey, which has a 25 percent Kurdish population (20 million Kurds) is bitterly opposed to the creation of an independent state. The Turkish army has targeted PKK forces, with which it has been in conflict since 1984 at a cost of 40,000 mainly Kurdish lives. However, the governing Justice and Development Party (AKP) has made clear that its ultimate aim is to intervene directly into Syria.

Without naming anyone, Prime Minister Racip Tayyip Erdogan accused foreign countries of backing the Kurdish fighters, who had made “dastardly” attacks on least three military bases. “Turkey has the strength to put enemy nations and circles who hold the strings of the terrorist organisation in their place,” he threatened.

Deputy AKP Chairman Omer Celik stated more directly, “The preparations and multi-pronged attack by the PKK in Hakkari exceeds the PKK’s capabilities. The PKK, in carrying out the attacks in Semdinli and Hakkari, acted in parallel with the massacres carried out by [Syrian President Bashar al] Assad’s forces in Aleppo.”

The AKP has placed itself at the head of the movement to depose Assad, breaking its former alliance with Syria. It calculated that this would secure its leadership of an alliance of Sunni powers, including Saudi Arabia and Qatar, which the United States is utilising as a proxy through which to establish a client regime in Syria. This would cut Shia Iran off from its major regional ally and deprive Russia and China of a foothold in the Middle East.

Chemotherapy treatment for some cancers may actually encourage tumours to grow, researchers have claimed. The treatment triggers the healthy body cells around the tumour to produce a protein that helps the disease to resist treatment. The surprise discovery suggests that some forms of the cancer treatment are doing more harm than good.

Scientists believe the effect is caused by the impact of chemotherapy drugs on healthy connective tissue cells called fibroblasts. In lab experiments they found the drugs caused DNA damage which made fibroblasts pump out 30 times more of a protein than normal. This protein encouraged prostate tumours to grow and spread into surrounding tissue, as well as to resist chemotherapy.

‘Cancer cells inside the body live in a very complex environment or neighbourhood,’ said lead scientist Dr Peter Nelson, from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre in Seattle, U.S. ‘Where the tumour cell resides and who its neighbours are influence its response and resistance to therapy.’

Blocking the treatment response of fibroblasts could improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy, say the scientists whose findings are reported in the journal Nature Medicine. The team examined cancer cells from prostate, breast and ovarian cancer patients who had been treated with chemotherapy.

Professor Fran Balkwill, from Cancer Research UK, said that this finding ties in with other research that has shown that ‘cancer treatments don’t just affect cancer cells, but can also target cells around tumours’.

Knight Capital: a Warm-Up for the Big One?

Anyone betting that the global financial system will continue to muddle along indefinitely deserves to reap the whirlwind that’s coming. As the rest of us well know, the international banking system is being kept afloat solely by political lies, stupidity, corruption, greed and, most of all, egregiously misplaced confidence. It would seem to be only a matter of time before the rotted timbers of this belief system give way. But what will be the catalyst? The possibility or even likelihood that the financial system will be toppled by some event no one was expecting was the novel theme of Nassim Taleb’s widely read 2004 book, Fooled by Randomness. In the New York Times, Taleb noted the following: What we call here a Black Swan (and capitalize it) is an event with the following three attributes. First, it is an outlier, as it lies outside the realm of regular expectations, because nothing in the past can convincingly point to its possibility. Second, it carries an extreme impact. Third, in spite of its outlier status, human nature makes us concoct explanations for its occurrence after the fact, making it explainable and predictable.

In the seven years since Taleb’s book rose to the top of the bestseller list, any number of factors could have caused the banking system to implode but did not. Thus has the passage of time strengthened his thesis by challenging still-widespread expectations of a collapse “any day now.” The possibility has not been negated, of course, but it seems increasingly unlikely that any of the well-known dreadnoughts that have been bearing down on us, including the Mayan calendar’s prophecy of the end of days, will terminate economic life as we know it. For in fact, the financial system has survived the de facto bankruptcy of Europe; a U.S. budget deficit now growing by more than a trillion dollars a year; the collapse of real estate prices in the U.S. and around the world; intractably high unemployment nearly everywhere; and “austerity” enough to push Europe to the brink of Depression. And yet, here’s the U.S. stock market on yet another bullish tear, ignoring all of the bad news to focus instead on the latest drivel from the ECB’s Draghi. In a sane world, Draghi’s words would go unremarked, and those who believe the central banks can reverse the collapse of, for one, a quadrillion-dollar financial derivatives bubble would be intellectual exiles.

So what will finally topple the house of cards? The answer probably lies no farther from us than Knight Capital’s near-death experience last week. One of the biggest players in the trading world, the firm’s computer’s went berserk and lost a reported $440 million in just 30 minutes. Two scary facts should not be lost on those who breathed a sigh of relief when Knight was rescued over the weekend by a group of erstwhile competitors. First, the entire edifice of global banking is hard-wired to the markets in exactly the same way that Knight is, driven by algorithms that are too quick to be overridden by humans. And second, the catastrophic failure of this fragile network seems all but inevitable. Indeed, it keeps happening over and over again on a smaller scale – first with the May 2010 Flash Crash on Wall Street, then with several other high-profile computer failures, one of them involving a programming error that botched the IPO for BATS Global Markets, a firm that had built its reputation on systems expertise.

Every now and then we prefer to sit back and let some of the smartest money speak, especially when said smart money agrees with us. In this case, we hand the podium over to none other than Paul Singer’s Elliott Management, which after starting with $1.3 million in 1977 was at $19.8 billion most recently. No expert networks, no high frequency trading, no “information arbitrage”, no crony capitalism and pseudo monopolies of scale, and most certainly no bailouts: Singer did it all the old fashioned way: by picking undervalued assets and watching them appreciate.

The timing is opportune because while Elliott has much to say about virtually everything in their latest 20 pages Q2 letter, it is the billionaire’s sentiment vis-a-vis US Treasury debt that may be most critical, and may be the catalyst that resulted in today’s abysmal 10 Year bond auction. To wit: “long-term government debt of the U.S., U.K., Europe and Japan probably will be the worst-performing asset class over the next ten to twenty years. We make this recommendation to our friends: if you own such debt, sell it now. You’ve had a great ride, don’t press your luck. From here it is basically all risk, with very little reward.” There is little that can be misinterpreted in the bolded statement. And while many have taken the other side of the Fed over the past 3 years, few have dared to stand against Paul Singer because if there is one person whose opinion matters above most, certainly above that of the Chairsatan, it is his.
