To get right to the point, three quality sources told me three weeks ago that the gold and silver markets were going to take off in August and I have been pounding the table on such ever since.  The action in the Gold Cartel suppressed precious metals markets the past few days suggests that surge has already started.

    As part of this surge, it has come to my attention that the nefarious activities of JP Morgan’s manipulative short position in the silver market is going to come to light in August, especially since they still have a big problem with that position … and part of it relates to their announced “whale trade loss issue,” if what I am told is spot on.

    The Barclay’s Libor scandal has alerted the investment world how manipulated the financial markets really are. The Gold Anti-Trust Action Committee has been sounding off on this critical issue since January 1999. On January 31, 2008, the Wall Street Journal printed GATA’s $264,000 full page color ad about the ramifications of the gold price manipulation scheme.     It is time for things to happen. As you know by now, I have been jumping up and down for fireworks to happen in August. We shall see. All I can say is that what has been brought to my attention over last three week period from the “best of” sources all points to the same conclusion. It will be nitty gritty time SOON. Perhaps that “soon” is “now” the way gold has traded the past three days.

    If what I think I know is correct, it will be time to pour it on our adversaries and send them running for the hills. It got me to thinking of some old time energy which could recirculate to give The Gold Cartel the PUSH in that direction of those hills.

    So much time goes by, many veteran Café members and GATA supporters might forget where one of GATA’s initial energy efforts came from to defeat The Gold Cartel. It surfaced from GATA’s trips to South Africa and relates to Africa’s greatest general in history, Zulu warrior chieftain SHAKA. It was around that time that one of the greatest movies ever, Zulu, starring Michael Caine, was on cable TV over and over again. It caught my imagination about how GATA could employ SHAKA’s battle plan to win the day for us … especially pertinent in that the Zulu miners were suffering so badly due to the heinous Gold Cartel’s price suppression scheme, as was all of South Africa.

    Holmes’ Psychiatrist Worked for Pentagon
    New damning details on the Colorado shooting now surface on a daily basis. The latest is that the highest honors neuroscience student James Holmes was seeing a psychiatrist. Holmes was a patient of Dr. Lynne Fenton at the University of Colorado. Fenton worked for the Air Force in Texas and was known for dispensing dangerous pharmaceutical drugs, according to the Washington Post.

    The doctor’s background came to light after the corporate media reported Holmes allegedly mailed a notebook “full of details about how he was going to kill people” to her before the attack. “Among the images shown in the spiral-bound notebook’s pages were gun-wielding stick figures blowing away other stick figures,” Fox News reported. This is an obvious attempt to hastily arrange a backstory on Holmes and portray him as a murderous psychopath. It is a key element in the narrative portraying him as a lone wolf, which is the preferred government story when it conducts false flag operations for political gain and to manipulate public opinion.

    Judge Imposes Gag Order to Prevent Release of Information Contradicting Official Narrative
    The judge presiding over Holmes’ case has imposed a gag order in the courtroom. District Court Judge William Blair Sylvester has also ordered the University of Colorado not to release his school records after the media filed a request for the documents. The gag order was issued after video from the courtroom showed an obviously drugged James Holmes. The order “bars attorneys from publicly commenting on matters including evidence, whether a plea deal is in the works or the results of any examination or test,” the AP reported.

    The effort is an attempt to prevent the media and researchers from discovering the obvious – James Holmes is a patsy and possibly the victim of mind-control. He does not fit the profile of a mass murderer who understands weaponry and paramilitary equipment. “He’s not on anybody’s radar screen — nothing,” a police officer told the New York Times. “This guy is somewhat of an enigma. Nobody knows anything about him.”

The NIH explained the grant included a “$21,600 stipend per year in 12 monthly installments to help defray living expenses while they pursue their academic research training experience.”

Millions of Americans do not believe the official narrative and find the explanation that a shy neuroscience student suddenly turned into a mass murderer implausible.     Israel treats children like adults. Only two countries impose life without parole (LWOP) sentences on minors – America and Israel. Israel is a signatory to the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). It’s explicit and binding provisions state:
    -
    - “every human being” below 18 is a child; 
    - their economic, social and cultural rights, safety and welfare must be protected “without discrimination of any kind” with regard to “race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national, ethnic or social origin, property, disability, birth or other status,” including their “right to life….survival (and) development;”
    - all measures shall be taken to protect children from physical and mental violence, exploitation or ill treatment; and
    - children deprived of liberty shall be treated with humanity and not subjected to torture or other abusive or degrading treatment.

    International human rights and humanitarian law demand it. Israel spurns CRC and other international law with impunity. Studies document it. A new one conducted by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) titled “Children in Military Custody” discussed horrendous abuses.

    From September 10 – 17, a delegation comprised of nine lawyers visited Israel and the West Bank. They included a former attorney general, a former appeals court judge, and several lawyers known as QCs. They evaluated how Palestinian children are treated under Israeli military law.

    On July 29, 2009, Israeli General Gadi Shamni signed Military Order No. 1644. It established the “first-instance military court for youth, presided over by a single juvenile-court judge or by a panel led by a juvenile-court judge.” It states:
     -
    “The head of the military Court of Appeal must appoint judges from the first instance court in the military court.” “The judges must be prepared to be competent for the post of juvenile judges after the approval of the head of the Court of Appeal to be appointed as juvenile judges for a certain period, which has been identified.”

    It also requested court sessions be “as separate as possible” from regular ones for adults. In addition, a Civil Administration welfare report on the defendant’s family should be issued “if the court believes this necessary to determine the minor’s verdict.”

    Under Military Order No. 132, minors are categorized as follows:
    -
    - children are under age 12;
    - youths are from 12 – 14;
    - young adults are between 14 and 16; and
    - at age 16, minors become adults.

    According to CRC, adulthood begins at age 18. In practice, children are treated like adults. According to Defence for Children International (DCI) representative Khaled Quzmar:

    “After reading the order I can say that there is nothing new.” “They are just playing with words and trying to make useless cosmetic changes to hide the realities of the military system itself.”

    “This military order also gives incredible authority to the military prosecutor who can give permission to override a series of clauses in the order itself.” “Military Order 1644 exempts all hearings to determine whether a child should be kept in pre-trial detention until the end of the legal proceedings from the requirement of having to be heard before a ‘juvenile judge.”

    In September 2011, Israel issued Military Order 1676. It raised the age for children to 18. It states parents should be told and legal counsel provided. Language lacked specifics. The order circulated only in Hebrew. Doing so violates international law. Moreover, youths of any age are denied basic rights.

    They’re abusively treated. They’re prosecuted in military courts. In practice, they don’t differentiate defendants by age. Children 12 and under may be imprisoned. Parents and legal counsel aren’t permitted with them during interrogations. Offenses most often allege stone throwing. Many youths are falsely charged.

    They can be held for weeks without access to lawyers. They can be imprisoned up to two years. Complaints filed are ignored. FCO said:

    “a significant number of allegations of physical and emotional abuse of child detainees by the military which neither the complaints system nor the justice system is addressing satisfactorily.”

    Prosecuted Israeli and Palestinian children for similar alleged offenses face vastly different treatment.

    Another jump in the banker brush fire might be the revelation that the big US banks are preparing for a Paradigm Shift. The Eastern nations are well along a path to settle trade outside the USDollar. The Chinese have arranged for bilateral currency swap agreements with a gaggle of nations, mostly from the East, but also Brazil in the West. Consider such agreements to be the foundation for barter systems coming into vogue. The key is their non-US$ nature. The entire loss of global trade settlement done in the US$ terms is being elevated in importance. Some day soon, it might become the majority of trade. The tipping point could come when over 50% in trade excluding crude oil is managed outside the US$ settlement. Later, like in a year or so, maybe a bigger tipping point could come with over 50% of all trade including crude oil being managed ouside the US$ sphere. The big banks must see the trend, unless they wear blinders, unless their arrogance is so thick, or unless they are so pre-occupied with other brush fires that they leave themselves vulnerable and unprepared.

    A very important tenet of global trade and banking is that trade dictates banking activity, not the other way around. It used to be for decades that the USDollar global standard required all trade to be settled in its reserve currency. The banking structures must reflect the reality of trade settlement methods and practices. However, the mortgage bond crisis laden with banking fraud in mortgages and foreclosures rendered damage. The TARP Fund patch job with bait & switch in executive largesse rendered damage. The USFed bond monetization (called euphemistically Quantitative Easing) went out of control, causing a global rise in energy and food prices. The result was great damage rendered. The endless foreign wars on a credit card have caused deep resentment, replete with fraud among the service contractors, also rendered damage. The Iran sanctions, further distracting from the basic violation of Iranian oil sales outside the US$ sphere, have resulted in tremendous insurrection against the global reserve currency.

    The major Paradigm Shift in trade has been the emergence of non-US$ trade settlement and the development of devices to facilitate the skirting end around process. Therefore, the banking system must adapt or be left isolated. The big US banks might soon be caught in revelations that they are preparing for shunning of the USDollar in trade payments and satisfaction. They might reveal processes already in place to dump USTreasury Bonds at their artificially lofty values, maintained by high powered Interest Rate Swap machinery during a falsely engineering flight to safety. Imagine open communications about demanded IRSwap usage to maintion artificially rigged high bond principal values. They will be more visible under document discovery amidst the LIBOR investigations. If the big US banks are shown to be diversifying out of USTBonds during the current crisis, it would indeed be devastating news against the Dollar Fortress. Expect further revelations and documented evidence of diversification away from the bubblicious overvalued USTBonds, as the trade settlement pathways avoid the US bull chits. It is only natural in the brush fire jumps.

    Major changes are coming. A return to a certain type of Gold Standard is right around the corner, awaiting the Western collapse that is in a late stage of pathogenesis. The jumping brush fires that the London, New York, and Western European bankers must contend with will eventually envelop them, doling out massive smoke inhalation. Worst of all, the jumps will expose new areas of corruption every few weeks, sufficient to bring down the system. After all, it is a fiat faith based system. The faith has long ago vanished. All that remains is power politics, arrogance, and corruption. The new system will force the Gold price above $5000 per ounce on a conservative basis. It is all part of the plan not yet revealed. The Gold/Silver Ratio will revert to 20:1 in time. That translates for the math impaired to a $250 per ounce Silver price. These are conservative figures.

    An assured jump in the banker brush fire will be the revelation of massive raids on Allocated Gold accounts done systematically over two decades. The big Western banks have been illegally grabbing the gold bars via unauthorized leasing, then selling them in the open market in order to maintain the artificially low Gold & Silver prices. The process of revelation is already well along, with important major lawsuits in Switzerland. The Matterhorn case where Von Greyerz pointed out the long delays for his fund investors to receive their gold bars from Allocated accounts has added to the controversy. The gold bars arrived with stamps and dates much younger than the original bars owned, lifting the veil of fraud. The scandal has not yet reached the public eye, but it will very soon. Some Gold experts call it The Mother of All Gold Scandals. Several class action lawsuits totaling several $billion are underway in the elite banker nation of Switzerland. So far, the coopted press has kept a lid on the story. The leaks will be natural, like an overflow of chocolate from the vat. The documents concerning the serious illegal activity will be more visible amidst document discovery during the LIBOR investigations.

    My best source shared in 2010 that at least 20 thousand tons of Gold had improperly been taken, leased, and replaced with gold paper certificates in vaulted locations. The bullion bankers were dangerously short. In 2011, he admitted that the criminal activity had easily surpassed 40 thousand tons of Gold illegally leased, resulting in a massive short position for the bullion banks. In 2012, he increased his estimate to between 40 and 60 thousand metric tons of gold illegally seized from Allocated Gold accounts, the short position totally out of control and absolutely impossible to bring into balance with short covering. In the last week, he passed along a communication with a veteran Gold expert with decades of savvy experience. They concluded that remedy for the vast gigantic short position by the gold bullion bankers will send the Gold price well over $10,000 per ounce. They believe probably by the end of the criminal prosecution remedy, the resolution of the defrauded Allocated gold accounts, and the installation of the new trade system alternative, the Gold price will find a natural value at least twice that elevated value. Expect further revelations and documented evidence of vast Allocated Gold account raids, and improper raids to gut the Exchange Traded Funds (GLD, SLV). It is only natural in the brush fire jumps.

    The Gold Bull will hit on all eight cylinders, and adopt another four cylinders, when the Allocated Gold account fraud is revealed and hits the news. Only then will public calls for broad criminal prosecution be accompanied by equal calls by the very wealthy. By then, speculation will extend to how high the Gold price can go, and to what limit. Think at that point, unlimited extensive money growth, a gaggle of futile bank aid packages, and currency debasement abuse from the hyper monetary inflation underway for over four years. The Gold price must match the abuse stride for stride, when at the same time react to forced bullion banker purchases of Gold in order to replace the raided Allocated accounts. A frenzy will come.

    The concept of solutions for the global monetary system, the global currency system, and the global banking system, have become outright laughable and an insult to the intelligence of observers. The paper system has become weighed down by toxic assets to the point of rendering the entire system insolvent and sinking its future prospects    . No new debt can repair and provide remedy for the fatally sick and current overly indebted dying system. The new trade settlement facilities are ready to put in place, based upon a Gold & Silver core. That word has come from a source directly involved in the preparation process for the Eastern Fortress. The trade notes will provide the lubrication to complete trade, which will have a hard asset core. The USDollar will gradually fade away from trade settlement, except for the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and possibly Southern Europe. The great tipping point approaches, whereby over half of global trade will be settled outside the domain of the crippled toxic USDollar. The foreign participants can no longer tolerate the bank bond fraud, the central bank debasement, and the usage of bank devices as weapons.

    A full-blown sovereign bail-out of Spain would be economically and politically impossible and cost up to €650bn (£510bn), an in-depth study has warned.

    Leading think-tank Open Europe made the estimate based on the assumption the Spanish government would be forced out of the markets for three years because of its unsustainable borrowing costs, as happened in Greece, Ireland and Portugal.

    Between now and mid-2015, Spain has funding needs of €542bn, with its banks requiring up to €100bn on top of this. The Spanish regions possibly require another €20bn, according to the study. A Greek-style bail-out for Spain would bleed dry the eurozone’s €500bn rescue fund, making an alternative solution essential.

    Fears that Spain will need a sovereign bail-out mounted last week after the government’s borrowing costs hit fresh highs and Catalonia followed Murcia and Valencia as a region which may be forced to turn to Madrid for assistance to meet its   debt obligations.

    - Spain’s  unemployment level are now the highest in the industrial world
    - Figures released  two weeks after   Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced a plan to save 65 billion euro – nearly £51 billion – over three years.

    Spain’s unemployment rates have hit 25 per  cent – the highest since records began after Generalissimo Franco’s  dictatorship. Spanish officials have confirmed today that a  quarter of its population – and a shocking 53 per cent of young people – is  currently without a job.

    This is the latest blow to the country’s  economy as the government had hope the tourist season would help the country on  its way out of recession. It is now looking towards a bleaker future,  despite a vow of support from the European Central Bank, as 5.7 million  Spaniards eligible for work stand unemployed.

    Although the number of people who lost their  jobs was significantly less in the second quarter -  53,500 compared with  365,900 in the first quarter – the country’s unemployment rate is still the  highest in the industrial world, the national statistics office said.

    A third of all unemployed in the Eurozone now  live in Spain with more than half of those eligible to work under the age of 26  unemployed according to EU statistics agency Eurostat.

    The easiest way for NATO to destroy independent Syria would be to obtain a UN Security Council resolution authorizing a no-fly zone, a bombing campaign, and incursions by special forces, many of them sent by Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the other reactionary Gulf monarchies.  But this path has been blocked by the courageous resistance of Russia and China.  Another method would be to form a coalition of the willing outside of the United Nations and proceed to the attack, as was done in the cases of Serbia and Iraq.  But, with Russian President Vladimir Putin reasserting Russia’s support for Syria, this method poses the risk of Russian and Chinese retaliation in ways which the Anglo-Americans might find extremely painful.  Therefore, NATO created a multi-layered strategy to subvert and destroy the Syrian state using covert action below the threshold of bombing and invasion, although including out special forces and espionage.

    The signal to activate the assembled capabilities was given by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on July 8, when she warned Damascus that little time remained to avoid a “catastrophic assault” capable of destroying the Syrian state.  This is exactly what was attempted last week.First, NATO attempted to isolate Syria by interrupting communications with its traditional ally, Iran. According to the Wall Street Journal of July 23, the United States in particular has exerted pressure on the government of Iraq to deny overflight permission for flights between Syria and Iran through Iraqi airspace.  An official US diplomatic demarche delivered in Baghdad demanded that such flights be banned.  At the same time, pressure was exerted on the government of Egypt to violate the international status of the Suez Canal by preventing the transit of Iranian ships allegedly headed for Syrian ports. But these efforts have yielded only mixed results, according to this account.

    The main diplomatic thrust of the destabilization effort was yet another UN Security Council resolution opening the door to Chapter Seven economic sanctions and military attack on Syria. This transparent bid for a general war in the Middle East was duly vetoed by Russia and China, while Pakistan and South Africa abstained despite US pressure. United States Ambassador to the UN Susan E. Rice became hysterical, raving that the Russian Federation was “pitiful,” “dangerous,” and “deplorable” after she lost the vote.  Hillary Clinton had previously branded Russia as “despicable” and “intolerable.”  One imagines these charming ladies chewing the carpet as Hitler reportedly did during the run-up to the Munich conference of September 1938.

    Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov correctly described the US diplomatic posture as “justifying terrorism.” According to Lavrov, the US stance amounted to, “We will continue to support terrorist attacks until the Security Council does what we want.” It would now be in order for Russia and China to propose a Security Council resolution condemning the United States and its allies for giving material support to terrorism.

    The most dramatic single episode of the assault was an apparent explosion on Wednesday, July 18 in one of the main Syrian government buildings which killed Defense Minister Rajha (the top Christian in the government), crisis management director Turkmani, and Assef Shawkat, a military intelligence expert and brother-in-law of President Assad. Interior Minister Shaar was reported wounded, and national security director Ikhtiyar succumbed later to injuries.  Western media were quick to gloat, attributing the explosion to a suicide bomber recruited from inside one of the key ministries, but this may reflect an attempt to launch a variation of Operation Splinter Factor among top officials. Other hypotheses include a rocket fired from a US drone.  Thierry Meyssan has reported that the explosion was detonated from inside the US Embassy, which is nearby.

He was the frontman for the short-lived and over-hyped “Kony 2012″ propaganda campaign that exploited young people’s emotions to popularize a U.S. military invasion of Uganda. After his lies were exposed on the Internet he had a shocking meltdown in public. He ran around naked near traffic lights, smashed his fists on the pavement, and screamed bizarrely. The heavy spirit of Madness conquered his weak will.

    The day before his freakish breakdown Russell was idolized in the mainstream press as a saint on a mission to save the children of Africa. His war propaganda documentary about the deceased CIA contractor Joseph Kony became hugely popular on Facebook and other social media outlets. But as soon as his mask came down and his craziness was captured by cameras, the media vultures forgot about his crusade and quickly moved on to the next hot story.

    The new story that captured the corrupt Western media’s attention was Syria. The conflict was heating up, and the “international community” was being pressed to take action against the country. “Assad is killing his own people,” they said, without offering any evidence. “This is the next domino to fall in the Arab Spring, the rebels must be supported and Assad has to step down,” so went the propaganda. And yadda yadda. The media’s insane lies were repeated for months. Major media channels were engaged in non-stop propaganda warfare to destroy the independent Syrian state and reduce Syrians to slavery.

    But then something remarkable and unexpected happened. Some Western journalists began telling the truth about the origins of the conflict, the true motives behind the West’s anti-Syria propaganda, and the nature of the unpopular Syrian opposition.

    The spell was broken.

    In June, German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) reported that the infamous Houla massacre was committed not by Assad’s forces, as it was claimed by the Western media at first, but by the NATO-backed terrorist opposition.

    The official narrative about the Syrian conflict fell apart at that point. The moral case for overthrowing Assad was lost because it was based on total lies. The naked aggression by NATO’s barbaric pawns against Syrian civilians was clear to see for anyone who was paying attention.

    Given the worsening crisis in Syria, the Nezavisimaya Gazeta newspaper reported [June 2012] that the Russian army is apparently being prepared for a mission in Syria. Citing anonymous sources in the military leadership, the newspaper said that Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the general staff to work out a plan for military operations outside Russia, including in Syria.

    The units being prepared for an intervention are the 76th Division of airborne forces (an especially experienced unit of the Russian army), the 15th Army Division, as well as special forces from a brigade of the Black Sea fleet, which has a base in the Syrian port of Tartus.

    The details of the operational plan are being prepared by the working parties of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation, to which most of the post-Soviet states belong, as well as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, to which China and Russia belong.

    According to the newspaper report, deployment depends on the decision of the Russian government and the UN. However, the plans also foresee that the troops might intervene without UN approval. The Russian government has so far not confirmed the report.

    On Monday last week, three Russian warships were sighted off the Syrian coast. An anonymous source from the Russian government told the Iranian newspaper Tehran Times that Moscow wants to show NATO that it will not allow any military operation against Damascus under the guise of a humanitarian mission.

    Earlier, the secretary-general of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, Nikolai Bordjusha, had held out the possibility of using “peacekeepers” in Syria. “The task in Syria is likely to be to impose peace—primarily against the insurgents, who use weapons to solve political problems.”

    Russia and China strongly oppose a military intervention by NATO in Syria, and have already blocked two UN resolutions on the issue. The US and its allies, especially Turkey, Saudi Arabia and France, have stoked up a civil war in Syria and are systematically arming the so-called rebels, who consist mainly of Islamists, ex-members of the government, or Al Qaeda terrorists. Turkey is increasingly in the leadership of the US proxy war in Syria.

    In recent weeks calls for a military intervention in Syria have increased. After the massacre in Houla, French President Francois Hollande spoke out in favour of military intervention. The West blamed the government of Bashar al-Assad for this massacre without any clear evidence. The German elite is also openly discussing a possible military intervention; Berlin has tried unsuccessfully to push Russia to make concessions on the issue.

    Russia has not excluded a “political solution”, i.e., the slow transition from the Assad regime to another government. At all costs, however, the Kremlin wants to avoid the violent overthrow of Assad by the West for several reasons, whether it is through direct military intervention by NATO or is brought about by the rebels armed by the West. Two weeks ago, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev warned that a military intervention in Syria could quickly escalate and lead to the use of nuclear weapons.

    Since Soviet times, Moscow and Syria have maintained close ties, especially in military and economic matters. More importantly, however, a war against Syria means a ramping up of US aggression in the Middle East. The US has already significantly extended its influence in the region through the wars against Afghanistan and Iraq. They also have military bases in almost every country in the area: Pakistan, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Turkmenistan, as well as some in other smaller states. Meanwhile, Syria and Iran, which are virtually surrounded by US military bases, have become the last bastions of Russia and China in the Middle East against the encroachment of the United States.

    Syrian President Bashar Assad, amid growing unrest, has granted control of parts of northern Syria over to militant Kurds, long branded as terrorists by Turkey, in a provocation that could lead the conflict to break out internationally.

    Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan had earlier said that Turkey would not accept an autonomous Kurdish area in Syria, fearing separatist Kurds in Turkey would use it as a safe-haven to launch cross-border attacks.

    Late on Thursday Turkey mobilized and deployed tanks and missile batteries on the Syrian border near the Kurdish region, with Erdogan commenting if the Kurds control these areas, “then intervening would be our most natural right.”

    Kurdish control of these border areas are an apparent consequence of the chaos of Syria’s internal conflict, in which the US and its allies are sending aid, intelligence, and weapons to the Syrian rebels, despite numerous crimes and ties to terrorist groups.

    Turkish military intervention against the Assad regime came close to being a reality back a few months ago when Syria downed a Turkish fighter jet that went into Syrian airspace. Turkey has shown little hesitation to attack its neighbors if they feel their Kurdish threat demands it, as cross-border attacks into Iraq’s Kurdish region in recent months has shown.

Unilateral action against Syria could suck Turkey into conflict with Assad, worsen the internal conflict in Syria, and aggravate the Kurdish tensions in Turkey.

    Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he will not tolerate a Kurdish safe-haven in Syria following reports that Kurdish rebels and a Syrian Kurdish political party had taken control of large swathes of territory along the Turkish-Syrian border.

    Erdogan emphasized Turkey’s concern that a Kurdish authority in the north of Syria could provide a sanctuary to Turkey’s own Kurdish separatists for them to possibly launch attacks into Turkey

    “We will not allow a terrorist group to establish camps in northern Syria and threaten Turkey,” he said on Thursday. “If there is a step which needs to be taken against the terrorist group, we will definitely take this step.”
    -
    Late on Thursday Turkey mobilized and deployed tanks and missile batteries on the Syrian border near the Kurdish region, prompting concern Syria’s internal conflict could spill outside its own borders. Turkey is a NATO member state, so if it decides to engage it could have serious consequences.

    But Erdogan’s government has been allowing Syrian rebels to establish bases in Turkey, from which they launch attacks into Syria. Apparently, the Turkish motto is ‘do as we say, not as we do.’

    When Syria began to descend into extreme violence, Turkey gave shelter to the Syrian rebel fighters and eventually provided them with lethal and non-lethal aid, despite their having ties to terrorist groups and having committed serious crimes themselves. That Turkey would complain about Syria committing to the mirror image of its own policies is embarrassing.

    The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which has been fighting for autonomy in southeast Turkey for decades, has been condemned as a terrorist group by Turkey, the European Union and the United States. During the 1990s, Washington supported Turkey major atrocities in the southeast Kurdish region, leaving the countryside devastated with tens of thousands killed and millions displaced.
