European Central Bank head Mario Draghi announced a policy of resuming the mass printing of euros, in a speech to a European Parliament committee on July 26. Draghi promised to start buying Eurozone countries’ bonds en masse again, appearing to reverse his own policy statement of only three weeks ago after the ECB’s last meeting. The reversal was provoked by spreading panic among European financial markets as the interest rate on Spain’s 10-year bonds had been starting to approach 8%, with Italy’s following.

Draghi’s announcement of another hyperinflationary attempt came with bluster: “Within our mandate, the ECB is ready to do whatever it takes to preserve the euro. And believe me, it will be enough,” he said, undoubtedly realizing that any sensible audience would not believe him. The ECB’s balance sheet is already $4 trillion, larger than that of the Federal Reserve, and that has only slowed the banking collapse. It bought 50 billion euros in Greek sovereign debt, to little effect on that crisis.

Now, by promising hyperinflation, Draghi sent the stock markets into a day’s euphoria, and Spain’s 10-year rate briefly sank down to about 7% again. But Draghi has put those same markets on the line when the ECB meets Aug. 2, with German board members likely strongly opposed. If it does not deliver a big sovereign-bond buying binge, “financial markets would likely be thrown back into chaos,” warned the Wall Street Journal. “By using strong words, he is inviting creativity and fantasy in financial markets on what they can put on their wish list” for ECB action, said Carsten Brzeski, economist at ING Bank, to the Journal. If disappointed next Thursday, “markets might go wild.”

An Iraqi Al-Qaeda operative has admitted that his organization is taking part in the Syrian uprising against President Assad. The revelation comes amidst increasing evidence that Al-Qaeda is gaining a foothold in Syria.

Abu Thuha, a 56-year-old Al-Qaeda operative living near Kirkuk in northern Iraq, described the Islamist organization’s grand plans to an Iraqi reporter for The New York Times.

“We have experience now fighting the Americans, and more experience now with the Syrian revolution,” he noted. “Our big hope is to form a Syrian-Iraqi Islamic state for all Muslims, and then announce our war against Iran and Israel, and free Palestine.”

Similar revelations that “around 90 terror attacks that can be attributed to organizations that are close to Al-Qaeda or jihadist groups were carried out in Syria between the end of December and the beginning of July” have been made by the German foreign intelligence service, the BND.

Last week, at least four senior government ministers were killed in an explosion in Damascus, as fighting between troops and rebels raged on in the outskirts of the city. Both the Free Syrian Army and the Islamist Liva al-Islam claimed responsibility for the bombing.

Last month, seven people were killed and 11 were kidnapped in an attack on the state-run Al-Ikhbariya TV station. The Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Nusra Front for the People of the Levant claimed responsibility for the attack.

In May, two car bombs detonated by suicide bombers went off next to a military intelligence complex in Damascus, killing at least 55 soldiers. All in all, at least 35 car bombings and 10 suicide bombings have taken place in Syria this year, data compiled by the Institute for the Study of War shows. Last week, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the pseudonymous new leader of Al-Qaeda’s branch in Iraq, issued his first audio statement in which he devoted 30 minutes to praising the Sunni struggle against President Assad, a member of the offshoot Shiite Alawite sect. The statement also served as a harbinger for the deadly Monday attacks in Iraq.

US State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland said the recent attacks against senior government officials in Damascus were “not surprising.”

For many months, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has depicted the militants creating havoc across his nation as “armed gangs,” “foreign terrorists,” and simply just, “terrorists.” During a 2011 interview in Damascus with Barbra Walters, Walters feigned indignation when hearing these labels, insisting that these were people simply seeking “democracy” and “freedom.”

The FSA are Terrorists
AFP now reports that the so-called “Free Syrian Army” (FSA) militants who had attempted to overrun the city of Aleppo in Syria’s north on July 17, in coordination with an assassination bombing and a similar militant attack on Damascus, are now trapped in the city center, awaiting Syrian Army reinforcements expected to close in and neutralize them. An AFP correspondent embedded with the terrorists reported that, “two men, accused of belonging to pro-government “shabiha” militia, were summarily dispatched in the street, each with a bullet to the head.”

By this of course AFP means, two civilians were rounded up and shot in the head – killed in cold blood in the streets.

BBC’s Ian Pannell also rode in with FSA terrorists during the initial attack on Aleppo, which is by all accounts a pro-Army, pro-Syrian city. Pannell described scenes of FSA militants “seeking revenge” as they too rounded up men “suspected” of being “shabiha.” The men were unarmed, terrified, and had weapons discharged at their feet as they knelt on the ground. Pannell doesn’t tell us if this group of men were “dispatched” as well, preferring to paper over what appeared to be an atrocity in the making by stating, “there is little justice on either side.”

On Wednesday, CNN’s crew met a Libyan fighter who had crossed into Syria from Turkey with four other Libyans. The fighter wore full camouflage and was carrying a Kalashnikov rifle. He said more Libyan fighters were on the way. The foreign fighters, some of them are clearly drawn because they see this as … a jihad. So this is a magnet for jihadists who see this as a fight for Sunni Muslims.
