George Galloway: London Militarized for Olympics!

  • The private security company, G4S, was handed 300 million pounds to hire 10,000 security guards to police the London Olympics. Last week, the army marched in another 3,500 soldiers to tighten the security for Londoners. “There are already signs all over the place warning drivers not to venture in the central London and the underground stations are festooned with posters warning of the mayhem to come,” said George Galloway.

    East London, where the Olympics are centered, has become a militarized zone. Blocks of apartments have had ground-to-air missile batteries installed on their roofs despite protests by the owners. Special lanes are being installed on approach roads so the athletes and organizers can be fast tracked, avoiding the traffic jams. According to the governor of the Bank of England, Britain is now in recession, which is set to continue for another five years.

    A Chinese advertisement was recently released for the Euro 2012 soccer tournament which created some controversy. (see top of post)

    Even though the ad is for a soccer tournament, it strangely depicts war-like scenes with tanks and anti-aircraft batteries being shot at planes flying in the sky and even a bomb being dropped on the stadium itself. (Commercial is available here.) The song being sung is the Chinese version of a Russian-themed masterpiece talking about the Communist-Russian Jewish song “Farewell Slavianka”...It’s all about rise, betrayal, and war.

    Right after the explosion, there is a quick flash with the words “NOW-TV” which implies that it will happen very soon as the commercial was aired recently during the Euro 2012 soccer tournament.

    One can’t help but notice that every-time there is a ball kicked, there is a trail of fire blazing through it. It seems like the Israeli team is persevering and trying really hard to score. Finally, there is a free-kick shot at the end of the game. The ball blazes through the goal-keeper and swooshes into the net. The tie-breaker has just been scored and there is no need for overtime periods or penalty shots to secure victory.

    The numbers 1,3,6,5,2,4 represent the London Underground – Travel Card Zones 1-6. Perhaps it also reflects the order in which the bombs will strike the London underground. Another interesting thing to note is that when the string of consecutive natural numbers from 1to 6 are added together, they automatically equal 21 or a “Blackjack”!

In the animated commercial, we see that planes will fly over it dropping bombs on the stadium simultaneously whilst Big Ben is blown up by a bomb placed inside it. The underground subway, land buses and bus terminals, and the train station at Stratford in particular are potential targets.

    Regulators on both sides of the Atlantic failed to act on clear warnings that the Libor interest rate was being falsely reported by banks during the financial crisis, it emerged last night.

    A cache of documents released yesterday by the New York Federal Reserve showed that US officials had evidence from April 2008 that Barclays was knowingly posting false reports about the rate at which it could borrow in order to assuage market concerns about its solvency.

    An unnamed Barclays employee told a New York Fed analyst, Fabiola Ravazzolo, on 11 April 2008: “So we know that we’re not posting, um, an honest Libor.” He said Barclays started under-reporting Libor because graphs showing the relatively high rates at which the bank had to borrow attracted “unwanted attention” and the “share price went down”.

    The verbatim note of the call released by the Fed represents the starkest evidence yet that Libor-fiddling was discussed in high regulatory circles years before Barclays’ recent £290m fine.

    The New York Fed said that, immediately after the call, Ms Ravazzolo informed her superiors of the information, who then passed on her concerns to Tim Geithner, who was head of the New York Fed at the time. Mr Geithner investigated and drew up a six-point proposal for ensuring the integrity of Libor which he presented to the British Bankers Association, which is responsible for producing the Libor rate daily.

    Mr Geithner, who is now US Treasury Secretary, also forwarded the six-point plan to the Governor of the Bank of England, Sir Mervyn King. The Bank pointed out last night that there was no evidence in the Geithner letter of banks actually making false submissions – although then note did allude to “incentives to misreport”.

    It was unclear last night whether Mr Geithner informed Sir Mervyn about the testimony of the Barclays employee who said that the bank was being dishonest in its submissions.

    Western leaders and news media hyped the account of the Syrian opposition, which turns out to be exaggerated and fabricated.

    A purported massacre by the Syrian army near Hama on Thursday has turned out to be a battle between government forces and armed rebel militias, in another example of Western leaders hyping Syrian rebel propaganda.

    After the battle, online videos and news reports detailed the heavy casualties sustained by the rebel forces making it out to be a massacre of mostly unarmed opposition members by Syrian forces. Spokesmen for the opposition claimed the number of dead to be as high as 250, prompting Western leaders like Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to express “outrage.”

    New details of the incident, however, reveal the death count to have been much less, around 100. Almost all of those killed were men of military age who were armed and engaged in a battle with government forces.

    “Although what actually happened in Tremseh remains murky,” reports the New York Times, “the evidence available suggested that events on Thursday more closely followed the Syrian government account.” That is, a battle between regime forces and rebel militias, rather than a slaughter of unarmed civilians, as was claimed by the opposition and subsequently touted by Western officials.

    “If you think we stole, wait till you see what the other banks did.” That’s the gist of a July 13 internal memo by Barclays CEO Marcus Agius to the bank’s staff which went public today. “As other banks settle with authorities, and their details become public, and various governments’ inquiries shed more light, our situation will eventually be put in perspective,” the Telegraph quoted the memo today. The memo goes on to stridently defend the investment bank master-minded by the disgraced Bob Diamond— known internally as “Bob’s baby”—in what the bank itself called “an unequivocal statement”: “Our strategy and business model were right for Barclays before recent events, and they remain right for Barclays now.”

    The U.S. Justice Department’s Criminal Division is building cases against several banks, today’s NY Times reports today, based on DOJ sources. Congress must demand that they not be settled with an obscene kiss on the rump, as Eric Holder’s DOJ did in its agreement not to prosecute Barclays because of its extensive “assistance” to the DOJ. Though technically reserving the right to prosecute individuals, the DOJ release makes it very clear that there is no DOJ intention to do so—and certainly not the higher-ups.

    Deutsche Bank has sought a deal in which it provides evidence to European authorities about the LIBOR rigging in exchange for a lighter penalty, Der Spiegel reports today. It offered EC and Swiss investigators a pact in 2011, which Spiegel says was recently agreed on. According to a Morgan Stanley study, Deutsche Bank’s exposure to lawsuits might total more than $1 billion, and that of all banks together totals $22 billion.

    The prospect of criminal prosecution is rattling the banking world in general, the Times piece reports. The DOJ investigation comes on top of private investor lawsuits and broad investigations by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). More then 10 big banks in the U.S. are under investigation, and at least two European banks are scrambling to arrange deals. NY Times sources say UBS, whose Americas division chairman Robert Wolf is an Obama bundler and golf buddy, is high on the list.
