  Bank of England warns UK banks need more capital !

  Britain’s banks do not have enough capital to withstand an escalation in the   eurozone crisis, the Bank of England has warned.

  Members of the Financial Policy Committee (FPC), the Bank’s risk regulator,   “judged that the overall capitalisation of the banking system was unlikely   to be sufficient for stability to be assured” if there were “severe but   plausible” developments in the sovereign debt crisis, according to minutes   of last month’s meeting.

  The committee was also sufficiently concerned about weak lending in the UK to   consider suspending the rules governing how much banks must hold in cash and   other liquid assets to get credit flowing again. The rules may have “pushed   up the pricing of loans” and, by relaxing them, funds “supporting liquid   assets could potentially be used instead to finance lending”, the minutes   said.

  Both issues were addressed in last week’s Financial Stability Report, when   banks were told to continue building up their capital levels and liquidity   regulations were relaxed slightly instead of suspended. Analysis of the   report showed that easing the liquidity rules could release as much as   £150bn for lending to small businesses and households.

  Banks had been hoping for the capital rules to be loosened as well, but the   FPC decided the risks to financial stability and the economy were too great,   even though UK lenders are “reasonably well placed” to meet new standards   that begin coming into effect next year.

  “The committee was concerned that in especially severe, but plausible, adverse   scenarios in the euro area some UK banks could face large losses,” the FPC   said. Although “the position of individual institutions varied   significantly”, the overall health of the banks was too weak and threatened   “the supply of financial services to the economy”.

The idea that bankrupt nations in Northern Europe can bail out bankrupt nations in Southern Europe is nonsensical. The Eurozone is heading for a massive collapse!

  Spanish and Italian borrowing costs soared back into the danger zone as traders bet that the policy action by central banks was inadequate defence against the continued political and financial chaos in the eurozone.

  The yield on Spain’s benchmark 10-year bond rose above the 7pc bail-out level amid fears that opposition in Germany and Finland could crush the rescue plans agreed in Brussels last week.

  The Finnish finance minister, Jutta Urpilainen, said her country was not prepared to keep the euro “at any cost.” She said the euro was “use for Finland”, one of the eurozone’s last remaining AAA-rated countries, but added: “Collective responsibility for other countries’ debt, economics and risks; this is not what we should be prepared for. We are constructive and want to solve the crisis, but not on any terms.”

  European stockmarkets fell sharply, the euro dropped to its lowest level for three and a half years against the pound, and the yield on Italian 10-year bonds rose to 6.25pc, despite the move by the European Central Bank, the Bank of England, and the Bank of China to pump liquidity into their economies.

  On Friday a frustrated Joerg Asmussen, an ECB board member, said too much was being expected of the Bank. “We must explain what the limits of our powers and mandate are,” he said in a speech. “The ECB cannot compensate for what others – notably political authorities – fail to do.” He added: “There is no substitute for good policies.”

  In Brussels there were promises of more solutions at the Eurogroup meeting on Monday. One official told reporters that the 17 finance ministers intended to reach a “political decision” on how to support Spain.

   The U.S. has launched a witch hunt “reminiscent of the Spanish Inquisition” to “demonize” Muslims. “While President Obama may uphold freedom of religion, the U.S. inquisitorial social order has institutionalized patterns of discrimination, prejudice and xenophobia directed against Muslims,” writes Professor Michel Chossudovsky of the Centre for Research on Globalization, Montreal.

It appears that either NatWest’s IT problems have gone viral, or else Sberbank has also been impacted by margin calls/ liquidity concerns, as the largest Russian bank has halted credit and debit card transactions due to an ‘IT glitch’. Anyone that does not see today’s gold market as a rig is blind or brain dead. There is a full blown crisis in Western world banking today, right here and now. There is a full blown crisis in sovereign debt of some weaker nations as in a very short while certain government will be out of money. The Eurosnobs hate each other which does not make for a fast reconciliation of a crisis.
