    A scientific paper was released this past week after much controversy. The findings of the paper, some feared, could be used to develop a highly contagious version of the Avian H5N1 (Bird Flu) virus. While those fears have largely been quelled, the researcher’s findings indicate that a pandemic of H5N1 is “just 3 mutations away.”

    Currently, H5N1 can only be transmitted to humans from birds. It cannot pass from human to human like the cold virus or other influenza viruses. According to The Times of India, scientists say there are already some strains of the bird flu that are three mutations away from being passable by humans.

    “With the information we have, it is impossible to say what the exact risk of the virus becoming airborne transmissible among humans,” said Professor Derek Smith, one of the study authors. “However, the results suggest that the remaining three mutations could evolve in a single human host, making a virus evolving in nature a potentially serious threat.”

    In order for H5N1 to become highly transmissible in humans, five different mutations would have to be present. Two of those five already exist. The other three were created by scientists and studied in the ferrets. Ferrets were used because they transmit the same influenza viruses as humans.

    Bird Flu Research Published Among Pandemic Fears
    Scientists stress that the virus that was “airborne transmissible” did not cause death in the ferrets, easing some concerns among those who worried these findings could lead to intentional mutations being spread as a bioweapons. The virus did, however, kill those ferrets in which high doses were squirted directly into their nostrils.

    The research findings have been under scrutiny for months as members of the scientific community debated on whether the information should be released.

    “There is always a risk,” said Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases. “But I believe the benefits are greater than the risks.”

    According to the New York Times, statements made by the study’s lead author, Ron A. M. Fouchier spawned much of the controversy leading up to the release of the findings.

    Fouchier reportedly raised alarm when giving interviews on the findings last fall. He said he had “done something really, really stupid,” and had “mutated the hell out of H5N1.” He went on to characterize the results as “very, very bad news,” saying they had created “probably one of the most dangerous viruses you can make.”

    Since that time, his enthusiasm has died down and he blames the media for overblowing the danger. Whether the findings weren’t as “very, very bad” as he originally thought or if they are simply downplaying them as an afterthought remains to be seen.

    Roberts explained that America’s five largest banks hold $226 trillion in derivative bets. For example, JPMorgan’s total assets approach $2 trillion. Its derivatives holdings exceed $70 trillion. Its risk capital is about $136 billion. Its “derivative bets are 516 times larger than the capital that covers the bets.”

    Goldman Sachs “takes the cake,” says Roberts. Its $44 trillion in derivatives speculation “is covered by only $19 billion in risk capital.” In other words, its bets are “2,295 times larger than” cash on hand covering them.

    Derivatives bets by America’s five largest banks exceed US GDP over 15-fold. Corrupt politicians allowing it assure eventual economic collapse. Banking executives are serial liars. After Moody’s downgrades, Citigroup and Bank of America officials said its action failed to reflect “safeguards” in place for years.

    Tony Blair, the former British Prime Minister, said the euro can only be saved by a “grand plan” in which Germany is prepared to treat the debts of all nations as one.

    The problem of the eurozone was that it was “motivated by politics and   delivered in economics”, he said on BBC 1′s Andrew Marr Show on Sunday, warning that incremental changes such as help for Spanish banks “is not enough” to address the bigger issues facing the European Union.

The report – which covers the period of October 2002 to May 2012 – was submitted to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child on 4 June. The report presents facts about children who were killed or used as human shields as a result of the occupation. It highlights the situation of the children prosecuted in Israeli military courts or held in military detention. In addition, DCI reveals details about ill-treatment by Israeli forces and the increasing use of violence by settlers against Palestinian children.

    The video above illustrates the behavior of Israeli soldiers and settlers towards Palestinian children. It was made in 2009 and tells the story of 16-year-old Jameel from occupied Hebron. Jameel testifies about his arrest by Israeli soldiers while he accompanied two electricians to his home. Jameel was beaten by the soldiers and taken blindfolded and handcuffed to a checkpoint nearby. He was forced to stand near the checkpoint while a group of 40 to 50 settlers threw stones and brutally beat him. When the soldier in command appeared, he released Jameel. However, he threatened Jameel not to talk about what had happened; otherwise he would personally kill Jameel.

    The US economy is likely to fall over a “fiscal cliff” at the start of next   year because Washington will be too divided to stop it, Joseph Stiglitz, one   of the world’s leading economists, has warned

    America faces a combination of tax increases and spending cuts in January   which risk plunging the world’s biggest economy back into recession if they   are all allowed to happen, he said.

    “There are so many political battles ahead that the likelihood we avoid all of   these elements that will then avoid the fiscal cliff is very problematic,”   Mr Stiglitz told The Sunday Telegraph. “It’s a real danger.”

    The warning comes as concerns grow that the US will embark on a fiscal squeeze   that economists estimate will be between 3.5pc and 4pc of the country’s   gross domestic product. By contrast, the International Monetary Fund has   said that Britain’s fiscal contraction amounted to 1.7pc of GDP last year   and a further 1.6pc is due this year.

    “It’s unambiguously the case that these measures will slow down growth,” said   Mr Stiglitz. “If there is European turmoil, there is a significant   probability of going into a recession.”

    In a statement from the office of Prime Minister Erdogan, Turkey has said that a military jet that it had reported missing early Friday was shot down by Syrian air defenses. The statement, issued around 6:00 p.m. Eastern U.S. time Friday, said, “As the result of the data provided by our related institutions and the research jointly conducted with Syria, it was understood that our plane has been downed by Syria…. Turkey, after the incident is fully enlightened, will lay forward its attitude and take necessary steps.”

    Turkish and Syrian rescue forces are jointly searching for the two missing Turkish pilots, both countries reported.

    At approximately the same time as the Erdogan statement, a military spokesman issued the following statement, according to the official Syrian Arab News Agency: “At 11:40 AM on 22/6/2012, an unidentified aerial target violated Syrian airspace, coming from the west at a very low altitude and at high speed over territorial waters, so the Syrian anti-air defenses counteracted with anti-aircraft artillery, hitting it directly as it was 1 kilometer away from land, causing it to crash into Syrian territorial waters west of Om al-Tuyour village in Lattakia province, 10 kilometers from the beach.”

    The Syrian military spokesman also said that the Turkish plane “entered Syrian airspace and was dealt with according to laws observed in such cases.”

    While this incident threatens to immediately dramatically escalate the Syria crisis, for the past several days, the international media, from the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal to the Voice of Russia, has been full of detailed accounts of massive flows of arms into armed rebels inside Syria. The invariant in all of the news coverage, is that Saudi Arabia and Qatar are spending tens or hundreds of millions of dollars, providing the weapons, which are being smuggled into Syria from almost all the bordering countries—Iraq, Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan. Reports in Time magazine and the Voice of Russia today especially highlight Turkey’s role in giving the “green light” to the arms shipments—which the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has denied.

    According to recent news stories in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency has manpower on the ground in Turkey, facilitating the arms flows to select rebel group, under the guise of trying to prevent the weapons from getting into the hands of radical neo-Salafi and overt al-Qaeda elements.  In an interview with Reuters, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta insisted that the United States is not providing weapons to the opposition, but freely acknowledged that other third party countries certainly are arming the anti-Assad forces.

    “We made a decision not to provide lethal assistance at this point. I know others have made their own decisions,” Panetta said.

    Sources close to the Joint Chiefs of Staff have emphasized that the U.S. military brass is adamently opposed to any U.S. involvement militarily in Syria. They have made their views clear to President Obama and the National Security Council, and it will be hard for the President to buck the military on this issue. Any U.S. military engagement in Syria would require a level of resources on a par with the Iraq invasion and occupation of 2003—and right now, any such deployment would destroy the U.S. Armed Forces for a decade or more. In addition, General Dempsey and the other members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff are fully aware that the planned draw down and eventual withdrawal from Afghanistan required close cooperation from Russia, and that the differences between Obama and Putin on Syria could jeopardize many critical areas of military-to-military cooperation.  General Makarov is scheduled to visit Washington in mid-July as General Dempsey’s personal guest, where they hope to hammer out a resolution of the European ABM deployment and other issues.

    Reviewing the Syria escalation today, Lyndon LaRouche insisted that Russia must stand absolutely firm against any kind of regime change. He voiced confidence that Putin understands the game, and will not budge. If Assad goes, LaRouche insisted, there is no ability to prevent the situation in Syria and in neighboring countries from degenerating into uncontrolled chaos. “The only solution is to bring down Obama,” he concluded.
