Europe’s doomed experiment with the politics of austerity went down in flames over the weekend as voters across the region veered sharply to the left in savaging incumbents. Elections in six European nations on Sunday promised to end any pretense of fiscal sanity. However, it remains to be seen how quickly and drastically the new leaders will act to further unbalance their nations’ books, ostensibly in the name of economic growth. Whatever they decide, there’s a Catch-22 that could make any promises of budget-busting relief for pensioners and public workers impossible to keep. Recall that even the socialists in Greece’s parliament were forced to support austerity measures a few months ago, because without such measures the country would have been unable to borrow enough cash to meet payroll.

In fact, despite several bailouts in the last two years, Greece remains so close to the edge financially that even hard-core socialists might find themselves forced to play ball with the bankers. The “middle way” for them, as has been the case all along, will be to talk austerity while practicing fiscal profligacy. Eurobank president Draghi offered a preview of how this would be done, cribbing a page from Goebbels’s handbook. At a “whisper campaign” meeting in Barcelona over the weekend, he was quoted as saying (whispering?) that Europe could hammer out a “growth compact” to go along with deficit reduction. Like Bernanke, he evidently thinks people are stupid enough to believe such claptrap. But even if it is unworkable as policy, it will used to “manage expectations” in the same cynical way that the Fed chairman manages them. Draghi’ s task will be more difficult, however, because he will be at odds not only with Germany’s conservative bankers, but with a German press that harbors no useful idiots like Nobelist Paul Krugman to zealously advocate ruinously inflationary fiscal policies and Big Guvvamint management of…everything.

I just find it strange, freakish, worrying, and intriguing that all the candidates for this year’s French Presidential election, won by Francois Hollande today, presented themselves in January 2012 to the main lodge of the largest of several Masonic organizations in France (and the oldest in Continental Europe, founded in 1733) the GODF or Grand Orient De France. Jean-Luc Melenchon, Eva Joly, Francois Bayrou, François Hollande, Hervé Morin and Nicolas Dupont-Aignan all stood at the pulpit of the temple of GODF to speak to the brothers. Marine Le Pen (Nationalist Party) was not invited to the GODF Lodge. Interesting? I don’t know.

Less than three weeks after at least 1,400 Palestinians in Israeli prisons launched a widespread hunger strike, Israeli Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch on Thursday made several astounding admissions regarding Israel’s use of administrative detention. In private meetings with security officials, Aharonovitch called for reducing Israel’s use of the practice, applying it “only if there is a need and not in all cases,” according to a Haaretz report.

He was in effect admitting that the practice is being used even when it is not necessary, if one accepts that it is ever necessary. Furthermore he seemed to be conceding that Israel uses administrative detention instead of carrying out thorough criminal or intelligence investigations.

In a presentation to Israel’s Defense Ministry, Justice Ministry, the IDF, Shin Bet and Prison Service, Aharonovitch recommended that authorities “exhaust investigations and evidence collections” in order to allow the application of criminal proceedings against Palestinian arrestees, a principle that shouldn’t need advocating in a democracy.

The official public explanation of the use of administrative detention, the practice of arresting and holding persons without trial or informing them of what crimes they are suspected, is that doing so in open court could reveal sensitive intelligence collection methods and the identities of informants. Administrative detentions are usually secret orders for six months periods of incarceration, which can be renewed indefinitely. In some cases, prisoners have been held without charge or trial for several years.

Earlier this year, two Palestinian detainees, Khader Adnan and Hana Shalabi, were released from custody after holding prolonged hunger strikes in protest of their administrative detentions. The international attention is weighing on Israeli officials. According to Haaretz, Israeli Foreign Ministry officials “estimate that several European Union states [might] begin filing protests, especially around the issue of administrative detentions, if the hunger strikes persist.”

But while international pressure might lead Israel to alter its course of action toward a small number of individuals, it is the hunger strike itself — one of the most powerful forms of non-violent protests — that has thrust the issue into the spotlight and which may well lead to a wider change in policy.
