    For decades, Palestinians have been slaughtered, displaced, intimidated, humiliated, collectively punished, and denied equal rights as Jews. They’ve also been mass imprisoned. Palestine is Israeli occupied territory. Military orders govern all aspects of daily life. Democratic rights are denied. Freedom is a non-starter, persecution a way of life.

    Gaza is an open-air prison. The West Bank and East Jerusalem fare little better. Life in Occupied Palestine for about 4.2 million residents is hell. No one’s safe from Israel’s wrath.

    According to the Addameer Prisoner Support group, over 700,000 Palestinians were imprisoned since June 1967. Over 20% of the population was affected. For males, it’s 40%. For women, it’s about 10,000 and for children around 7,000 since 2000 alone.

    No other country comes close to these figures. None calling themselves democracies would dare. With the world’s largest prison population by far, America comes closest. Mostly affected are Blacks, Latinos, and Muslims since Washington declared war on Islam. In America and Israel, praying to the wrong God is hazardous.

    Palestinian prisoner numbers vary. Thousands are affected at all times. Virtually all are political prisoners. Arabs aren’t welcome in Israel. In Palestine they’re equated with terrorists.

    Pre-dawn raids, arrests, false charges, harsh interrogations, torture, intimidation, rigged trials, and imprisonment terrorize them. Children young as 10 are affected. So is everyone wanting to live free on their own land in their own country. Perhaps one day, but not now.

    Israel holds Palestinians in 17 prisons, four interrogation centers, and another four for shorter-term detentions. All but one are in Israel in violation of Fourth Geneva’s Article 76. It states:

    “Protected persons accused of offences shall be detained in the occupied country, and if convicted they shall serve their sentences therein.”

    Proper treatment is also covered. Israel spurns all international law obligations. Palestinian prisoners suffer most. Military orders divide criminality into five categories:

    (1) “Hostile Terrorist Activity”
    (2) Disturbance of public order
    (3) “Classic” criminal offenses
    (4) Illegal presence in Israel
    (5) Traffic offenses

    Broadly defined ones criminalize “many aspects of Palestinian civic life.” For example, belong to the wrong political party and risk prosecution. Displaying a Palestinian flag is criminalized.

    Peacefully demonstrating is considered disrupting public order. “Pouring coffee for a member of a declared illegal association can be seen as support for a terrorist organization.”

    So can dozens of other non-threatening aspects of daily life conducted freely in real democracies. Not in Palestine, and increasingly also risky in America.

    Prison life for Palestinians is hell. Horrific conditions include severe overcrowding, poor ventilation and sanitation, no change of clothes or adequate clothing, wooden planks with thin mattresses and filthy blankets, inadequate food in terms of quality, quantity or conformance with dietary requirements, poor medical care, and restricted or no access to family members and counsel, among other abuses.

    (CNSNews.com) – If H5N1 bird flu, which has a 60-percent fatality rate, were engineered to spread like seasonal flu, hundreds of millions of lives would be at risk, a scientist told the Senate Homeland Security Committee on Thursday.

    “What happens if a mammalian transmissible H5N1 flu starts to spread?” Thomas Inglesby, CEO and director of the Center for Biosecurity at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, asked rhetorically in his testimony.

    “Seasonal flu affects 10 to 20 percent of the world every year–as much as a billion people or more,” said Inglesby. “The case fatality rate of wild H5N1 in the WHO database is nearly 60 percent, as you indicated. So if a strain of H5N1 with that fatality rate were engineered to spread like seasonal flu, hundreds of millions of people’s lives would be at risk. Even a strain a hundred times less fatal would place at risk millions of people’s lives.”

    A leaked directive issued to the Red Cross  indicates that the federal government has prepared plans to evacuate Chicago  during the NATO summit. An email sent to Red Cross volunteers in the  Milwaukee area notes that the NATO summit in May could “create unrest or another  national security incident.”

    “The American Red Cross in southeastern Wisconsin  has been asked to place a number of shelters on standby in the event of  evacuation of Chicago,” the email, which was leaked to CBS News, reads.

    A spokesperson for the Red Cross Chapter told CBS  “Our direction has come from the City of Chicago and the Secret Service”. While the Secret Service has not commented on the  news, officials at Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management and Communication  have denied having anything to do with the directive.

    Two weeks ago residents were startled by urban warfare drills conducted in downtown  Chicago on the authority of the OMEC. Huge black hawk helicopters  were seen flying low and in between buildings for hours. It now appears that  these exercises may be linked to the secret preparations.

    In addition, earlier this week a number of Chicago  area residents revealed that they have been asked to leave their homes in  preparation for major rioting. The residents received letters from management  that read:

    “We are STRONGLY recommending that all residents  find places to stay during the conference from May 18 through May 21.”

    “In the event of a riot or the potential of one  near the building, all access doors will be locked including the garage door,”  the letter continues. “For everyone’s safety, we will be instructing anyone in  the building to stay in his or her unit.”

    The fact that, “The American Red Cross in southeastern Wisconsin has been asked to place a number of shelters on standby in the event of evacuation of Chicago,” dovetails with reports earlier this year that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) put out a request for contractors to construct temporary emergency camps inside the United States which can be ready for occupancy within a 72 hour time period and used to house emergency responders as well as “displaced citizens.”

    The camps are primarily designed to house emergency responders, but will also be utilized to shelter “displaced citizens,” who will be “given the first opportunities for employment within the camp,” according to the solicitation. The camps will be able to service up to 2,000 people at one time.

    Scenarios based around displaced citizens were also part of the 2010 Operation Vigilant Guard exercises in Chicago which featured Polish troops training with the Illinois National Guard.

    The Department of Defense has confirmed foreign  media reports that Russian troops are set to target terrorists on Americans soil  as part of an unprecedented joint drill with the United States which will take  place in Colorado next month.

    As  we reported yesterday, Airborne troops from Russia are set to take part in  drills focused around targeting terrorists at Fort Carson between May 24 and May  31. The soldiers will also be mingling with the local community, attending a  baseball game in Colorado Springs during their stay.

    Although it marks the first time Russian troops  will train on U.S. soil, soldiers from a plethora of different nations have been  involved in similar drills for well over a  decade.

    “The Russian soldiers are here as invited guests  of the U.S. government; this is part of a formal bilateral exchange program  between the U.S. and Russia that seeks to develop transparency and promote  defense reform,” Cmdr. Wendy L. Snyder, U.S. Defense Press Officer for policy, told  The New American in an e-mail. “This is the first time that American and  Russian special operations troops have participated in a bilateral  exercise.”

    “According to Snyder, the exercises — which she said would  last about three weeks in all — will serve to train and improve skills related  to terror-war fighting. About 20 Russian soldiers will be participating, with  most of the training to take place on the Fort Carson, Colorado, Army base and a  mountain training area several hours away.”

    Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz said Europe is in a “dire” situation as a focus on austerity pushes the continent toward “suicide.” “There has never been any successful austerity program in any large country,” Stiglitz, 69, told reporters in Vienna yesterday. “The European approach definitely is the least promising. I think Europe is headed to a suicide. ”

    Politicians across the 27 European Union members are implementing austerity measures totaling about 450 billion euros ($600 billion) amid a sovereign-debt crisis. At the same time the debt of the euro region rose last year to the highest since the start of the single currency as governments increased borrowing to plug budget deficits and fund bailouts of fellow nations crippled by the fiscal crisis.

    If Greece was the only part of Europe that was having austerity, authorities could ignore it, Stiglitz said, “but if you have U.K., France, you know all the countries having austerity, it’s like a joint austerity and the economic consequences of that are going to be dire.”

    While euro-area leaders “realized that austerity itself won’t work and that we need growth,” no actions have followed and “what they agreed to do last December is a recipe to ensure that it dies,” he said, referring to the euro.

    ‘Lethal Combination’
    “The problem is that with the euro, you’ve separated out the government from the central bank and the printing presses and you’ve created a big problem,” Stiglitz said, adding that“austerity combined with the constraints of the euro are a lethal combination.”

    The economist said he sees a core euro area of “one or two countries” made up of Germany and possibly the Netherlands or Finland as the “likely scenario if Europe maintains the austerity approach,” he said. “The austerity approach will lead to high levels of unemployment that will be politically unacceptable and will make deficits get worse.”

    Youth unemployment in Spain has been at 50 percent since the crisis in 2008 with “no hope of things getting better anytime soon,” said Stiglitz, who is a professor for economics at Columbia University. “What you are doing is destroying the human capital, you are creating alienated young people.”

    To push for growth, European leaders could refocus government spending to “fully utilize” institutions like the European Investment Bank, introduce taxes to improve economic performance and use balanced budget multipliers, he said.
