    If anyone was still unsure about the fact that Iran has not so much as made the call to begin developing a nuclear weapon – which has already been confirmed by U.S. intelligence agencies and U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta himself (twice) – Israeli Defense Force Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Benny Gantz drove the point home once again.

    In an interview with Israeli news outlet Haaretz, Gantz made some quite surprising statements, including pointing out exactly what I have been saying for months, “the Iranian leadership is composed of very rational people.”

    The obvious conclusion to be drawn from this is that the Iranian leadership is not by any means insane or suicidal enough to either develop a nuclear weapon or use it against anyone, especially Israel.

    The statements from Gantz were, in my opinion, somewhat shocking seeing as he is the same individual who previously hinted at Israeli involvement in the abnormal number of beneficial “accidents” which seem to perpetually plague the Iranian nuclear program.

    That being said, Gantz of course fell back on some of the typical baseless accusations which Israeli and American leaders regularly level at Iran. These tired claims surround, of course, that Iran might use Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad to attack Israel when in reality it is Israel who is utilizing terrorists against Iran as confirmed by anonymous U.S. officials last year.

    Yet compared to the rhetoric of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Gantz is incredibly subdued in his statements, evidenced by Haaretz pointing out, “His language is far from the dramatic rhetoric of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and is usually free of the Holocaust comparisons of which Israeli politicians are so fond.”

    However, Gantz is presenting a very mixed message throughout the interview. At some points he’s saying that they have not so much as decided to progress towards a nuclear weapon, while at other times he says that Iran still has to decide to take “its nuclear program to a civilian footing only.”

    “[Iran] is going step by step to the place where it will be able to decide whether to manufacture a nuclear bomb. It hasn’t yet decided whether to go the extra mile,” Gantz said. It is this kind of ambiguous language which leaves plenty of wiggle room for him to go back on his clear statements – which are echoed in so many other sectors like U.S. intelligence and Panetta’s statements – if Israel decides to go to war with Iran without any clear justification.

    “If the supreme religious leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei wants, he will advance it to the acquisition of a nuclear bomb, but the decision must first be taken. It will happen if Khamenei judges that he is invulnerable to a response. I believe he would be making an enormous mistake, and I don’t think he will want to go the extra mile,” Gantz said.

    Interestingly, Gantz seems to hint that they will not look to the United States for a so-called “green light” for an attack on Iran. This has been made clear by reports which stated that Israel will not seek American approval for a strike. “America says its piece openly, and what it says in the media is also said behind closed doors. It cannot be translated into lights, red or green, because no one is asking them anything in that regard,” Gantz said.

    Gantz stated that this would be a quite large deployment, requiring massive amounts of resources and a large, powerful strike form the very beginning. “I am preparing for full deployment of our capabilities. The political leadership will have to take courageous, painful decisions,” Gantz said. “There are a certain number of critical decisions in a war. The chief of staff makes about 10 of these in his sphere of responsibility in wartime, and the political leadership makes about half this number.”

    He also said that they would expect more attacks on Israel, perhaps even from Syria and Lebanon, although there are no facts to back up his claims other than his clearly biased presumptions. It will be interesting to see how Israel moves forward in the near future, as the Israeli leadership seems completely uninterested in any negotiations or peaceful, diplomatic attempts to resolve the situation.

    Meanwhile, Iran has made it very clear that they want to participate in the nuclear negotiations even though the United States will likely come to the table with many significant demands while claiming that Iran has no right to come to the table with any demands or conditions whatsoever. When it comes down to it, this is just more laughable hypocrisy from Israel and the United States.

    1. Earliest warnings: 1979-84
    Fear of an Iranian nuclear weapon predates Iran’s 1979 Islamic revolution, when the pro-West Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was deep in negotiations with the US, France and West Germany, on a nuclear-energy spending spree that was to yield 20 reactors.

    The same alarm bells were already ringing in Washington, where in early 1992 a task force of the House Republican Research Committee claimed that there was a “98 percent certainty that Iran already had all (or virtually all) of the components required for two or three operational nuclear weapons.”

    Similar predictions received airtime, including one from then-CIA chief Robert Gates that Iran’s nuclear program could be a “serious problem” in five years or less. Still, the bureaucracy took some time to catch up with the Iran threat rhetoric.

    1992: Leaked copy of the Pentagon’s “Defense Strategy for the 1990s” makes little reference to Iran, despite laying out seven scenarios for potential future conflict that stretch from Iraq to North Korea.

    4. Rhetoric escalates against ‘axis of evil’: 1998-2002
    But Iran was putting the pieces of its strategic puzzle together. A US spy satellite detected the launch of an Iranian medium-range missile, sparking speculation about the danger posed to Israel.

    1998: The New York Times said that Israel was less safe as a result of the launch even though Israel alone in the Middle East possessed both nuclear weapons and the long-range missiles to drop them anywhere. “The major reaction to this is going to be from Israel, and we have to worry what action the Israelis will take,” the Times quoted a former intelligence official as saying. An unidentified expert said: “This test shows Iran is bent on acquiring nuclear weapons, because no one builds an 800-mile missile to deliver conventional warheads.”

    1998: The same week, former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld reports to Congress that Iran could build an intercontinental ballistic missile – one that could hit the US – within five years. The CIA gave a timeframe of 12 years.

    2002: CIA warns that the danger from nuclear-tipped missiles, especially from Iran and North Korea, is higher than during the cold war. Robert Walpole, then a top CIA officer for strategic and nuclear programs, tells a Senate panel that Iran’s missile capability had grown more quickly than expected in the previous two years – putting it on par with North Korea. The threat “will continue to grow as the capabilities of potential adversaries mature,” he says.

    2002: President George W. Bush labels Iran as part of the “axis of evil,” along with Iraq and North Korea.

    5. Revelations from inside Iran: 2002-05
    In August 2002, the Iranian opposition group Mojahedin-e Khalq (MEK, a.k.a. MKO) announces that Iran is building an underground uranium enrichment facility at Natanz, and a heavy water reactor at Arak. It is widely believed that the evidence had been passed to the MEK by Israeli intelligence.

    Enrichment and reactors are not forbidden to Iran as a signatory of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), but the failure to disclose the work prompts an IAEA investigation and much closer scrutiny. Iran insists its efforts are peaceful, but is found in breach of its IAEA safeguards agreement, and accused by the IAEA of a “pattern of concealment.”

    2006: The drums of war beat faster after the New Yorker’s Seymour Hersh quotes US sources saying that a strike on Iran is all but inevitable, and that there are plans to use tactical nuclear weapons against buried Iranian facilities.

    2007: President Bush warns that a nuclear-armed Iran could lead to “World War III.” Vice President Dick Cheney had previously warned of “serious consequences” if Iran did not give up its nuclear program.

    2007: A month later, an unclassified National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) on Iran is released, which controversially judges with “high confidence” that Iran had given up its nuclear weapons effort in fall 2003.

    Drawing on interviews with “roughly 40 current and past Israeli decision makers about a military strike” and American and Arab officials, Mr. Goldberg predicts that Israel will launch a strike by July 2011.     Europe (minus Germany) looks more like post-bubble Japan each month. The long-feared credit crunch has mutated instead into a collapse in DEMAND for loans. Households and firms are comatose, or scared stiff, in a string of countries.

    Demand for housing loans fell 70pc in Portugal, 44pc in Italy, and 42pc in the Netherlands in the first quarter of 2012. Enterprise loans fell 38pc in Italy. The survey took place in late March and early April, and therefore includes the second of Mario Draghi’s €1 trillion liquidity infusion (LTRO).

    The ECB said net demand for loans had fallen “to a significantly lower level than had been expected in the fourth quarter of 2011, with the decline driven in particular by a further sharp drop in financing needs for fixed investment.” Demand fell 43pc for household loans, and 30pc for non-bank firms.

    Mr Draghi told MEPs today that his three-year loans had at least averted a horrendous crunch. “Our LTROs have been quite timely and successful. I think buying time is not a minor achievement.” He is certainly right about that. The mess he inherited from the Merkel/Sarkozy expropriations of bondholders in Greece, and the Trichet/Stark tightening of monetary policy was calamitous.

    This slump in loan demand is more or less what happened during Japan’s Lost Decade as Mr and Mrs Watanabe shunned debt. Zero interest rates did nothing. The Bank of Japan was “pushing on a string” (though it never really launched bond purchases with any serious determination).

    It is true that banks have slowed the pace of credit tightening, but they are nevertheless still tightening. “A banking crisis remains very much in play for much of the region,” said David Owen from Jefferies Fixed Income.

    The credit squeeze is entirely predictable – and was widely predicted – given that banks must raise their core Tier 1 capital ratios to 9pc by July to meet EU rules, or face nationalisation. (The pro-cyclical folly of this beggars belief: by all means impose higher buffers, but not during a recession, and not by letting banks slash their balance sheets. The US at least forced its banks to raise capital, an entirely different policy since it does not lead to a lending crunch.)

    The IMF said last week that Europe’s banks would slash their balance sheets by €2 trillion – or 7pc – by next year. This amounts to an economic shock. The Fund said deleveraging on this scale at a time of sharp fiscal tightening risks a “bad equilibrium”.

    Greek central bank chief warns of euro exit!

    BRUSSELS – Greece’s central bank governor said his country would have to leave the eurozone if politicians do not stick to the austerity programme after elections due to take place on 6 May.

    “What is at stake is the choice between an orderly, albeit painstaking, effort to reconstruct the economy within the euro area, with the support of our partners, or a disorderly economic and social regression, taking the country several decades back, and eventually driving it out of the euro area and the European Union,” George Provopoulos said in a speech on Tuesday (24 April).

    Greece has signed up to a second, €130 billion loan paid mainly by other eurozone countries to reduce the country’s debt and recapitalise its banks, along with a major debt restructuring agreed with private lenders. But in return, an already austerity-weary Greek society has to stomach further spending cuts for at least another three years.

    Meanwhile the economic outlook for 2012 is worse than expected. Instead of a 4.5 percent of GDP recession, the central bank on Tuesday estimated that the economy would shrink by five percent this year, Greece’s fifth year of recession.

    For a long time a taboo topic, Greece’s euro-exit was first floated by French and German leaders last year when the former Prime Minister said he would organise a referendum on the austerity measures linked to a second bail-out.

    Today Egon von Greyerz told King World News that bankrupt nations are now printing money in a desperate effort to sustain the current global financial system.  Egon von Greyerz is founder and managing partner at Matterhorn Asset Management out of Switzerland.  Von Greyerz also reiterated that tens of trillions of dollars still need to be printed.  Here is what Greyerz had to say about the situation:  “There is so much happening in the world now.  We’ve had another package here, just under 400 billion euros (for the IMF).  This is an absolute drop in the ocean.  Spain needs many times that (amount).  I’ve talked about trillions and maybe even tens of trillions (that need to be printed going forward).”

Gold “Bargain of Lifetime” As Gold Standard Inevitable, Possibly Within Year – $10,000/oz Looms!

  • The world is returning to some form of gold standard. Many central banks are accumulating gold and dumping their USD. Gold is returning as the currency of choice for international trade settlement. Everyone accepts gold, whether you are a communist, capitalist, socialist … or whatever. Fiat currencies are going the way of DoDo birds.

    … Reuters TV have interviewed John Butler who says a return to the gold standard is “inevitable” possibly as soon as within the year and $10,000/oz gold is on the cards.

    Jamie McGeever interviews Butler in the Goldsmith Hall in London about his opinions propounded in his new book, ‘The Golden Revolution : How to Prepare for the Coming Gold Standard.’ Butler has 18 years’ experience in the global financial industry, having worked for European and US investment banks in London, New York and Germany.

    The book says that the era of paper currency is coming to an end and a return to a gold backed dollar is basically inevitable. McGeever starts the interview by saying that far from gold being expensive at $2,000/oz, gold may be “the bargain of a life time” especially “if the world returns to some form of gold standard.”

    Butler says that this “could happen as early as next year” due to BRIC nations dissatisfaction with the dollar reserve standard, “they will start to move formally back to gold”. There are many ways that this can happen according to Butler including one country becoming a first mover, surprising the world and the United States, by pegging its currency to gold. He points out that Russia may be the country who could do precisely that.

    This could lead to a run on the US dollar and financial assets and could see the dollar lose 20% in 24 hours as investors pour into real assets such as oil and gold. This could lead to a depression in the U.S. There could be a Bretton Woods style “crisis meeting” where the U.S. decides it must reinstate the gold standard or else the dollar “may lose its reserve status entirely.”

    Gold at $5,000/oz should happen and possibly over $10,000/oz in that scenario as gold will be a “de facto monetary asset in cross border balance of payments transactions”.

    Reuters’ McGeever acknowledges how the “gold market is tiny” compared to “trillions and trillions of dollars worth of cash and assets sloshing around the world financial system.” He asks how can countries back “all of that” against such a “tiny and finite amount of gold?” Butler responds by saying that “the amount of gold is finite by weight or volume, it is not finite by price.” If gold is going to be remonetised it is entirely reasonable that “gold’s price will rise by an order of magnitude.”

    Butler correctly points out that if gold were to rise to over $10,000/oz then in fact what you would have is a market capitalisation of gold, as it were, vis-à-vis the money supply and credit volume generally which is in line with a longer term comparison – it implies stability.
