In the most profound financial change in recent Middle East history, Gulf Arabs are planning – along with China, Russia, Japan and France – to end dollar dealings for oil, moving instead to a basket of currencies including the Japanese yen and Chinese yuan, the euro, gold and a new, unified currency planned for nations in the Gulf Co-operation Council, including Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait and Qatar.

Secret meetings have already been held by finance ministers and central bank governors in Russia, China, Japan and Brazil to work on the scheme, which will mean that oil will no longer be priced in dollars.

The plans, confirmed to The Independent by both Gulf Arab and Chinese banking sources in Hong Kong, may help to explain the sudden rise in gold prices, but it also augurs an extraordinary transition from dollar markets within nine years.

Chinese army general calls for ‘decisive action’ vs PH!

MANILA, Philippines – China should launch “decisive action” against the Philippines to reinforce Beijing’s claim on the disputed Scarborough Shoal, a hardline Chinese army general said Friday.

People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Major General Luo Yuan, in a commentary published by state-owned website china.org.cn, said China has not abandoned the idea of “war at all costs” to protect its interests. “‘Peaceful rise and ‘period of strategic opportunity’ preclude war,” said Luo, who has been described by Western media as “hawkish” for his ultranationalist views. “It is incorrect to assume that China will completely rule out military action in any event during this ‘period of strategic opportunity,’” he said, referring to Beijing’s dispute with Manila.

“To safeguard our sovereign and territory rights, we will never hesitate to face up to any military challenge,” he added. He also believes that Filipinos won’t go up against China’s military firepower.

Luo, who also serves as vice secretary-general of China Association for Military Science, said that instead of pulling out 2 ships from Scarborough, “China should have taken the opportunity presented by the situation to strengthen its claims to Huangyan Island by raising the Chinese flag or establishing a military or fishing base.” He accused the Philippines of causing the current standoff in the West Philippine Sea. “Therefore it is important that China demonstrates its determination to safeguard its national sovereignty and security,” he said. Luo said the current Chinese leadership should take heed from the late Deng Xiaoping, who once said that the country should “always put national sovereignty and security first.”

Israel ex-security chief says leadership ‘misleading public’ on Iran!

The former head of Israel’s domestic intelligence agency has accused the country’s leadership of “misleading” the public on the merits of a possible military strike on Iran. Yuval Diskin said an attack might speed up any attempt by Iran to obtain a nuclear bomb.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Ehud Barak have repeatedly said Iran must be prevented from building nuclear weapons and have not ruled out military action to disrupt its nuclear programme.

Israeli Military Chief’s Statement Shrugged Off in Latest Comments
The constant bane of those trumpeting the call for war with Iran reared its head earlier this week in the curious form of Israeli military chief Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz, who pointed out that Iran isn’t actually developing a nuclear weapon and went on to say that it was very unlikely the nation would ever try.

Such comments may have the war party on their heels, but never for long as today both US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and his Israeli counterpart Ehud Barak struck back with comments intended to raise fears about Iran’s non-existent weapons program.

Barak insisted that the upcoming May talks in Baghdad, aimed at a negotiated settlement with Iran, had no serious chance of succeeding, while likening Iran to nuclear weapons states like North Korea and Pakistan.

Panetta’s comments were more directly confrontational to Gantz, saying that he hopes “he knows something more than I do” and insisting that he has no specific information to suggest Iran isn’t developing nuclear weapons.

With Al Jazeera and Al Arabiyya, the Western media keeps on demonizing Iran and Syria for a coming overt war led by NATO and its allies — “this sounds just like the propaganda we heard before the attack on Iraq,” said Ron Paul, the black sheep of the Republican hopefuls.

These same media meanwhile are silent on the growing trend within the Empire towards measures typical of police states — the assaults on rights and freedoms, and on citizen privacy, the militarization of police as seen in the brutal repression of the 99 per cent, the authority to arrest, torture, detain, and even kill, citizens on “suspicion of terrorism” — all in the name of “national security.”
