    Michael Hewson of CMC Markets: “There is widespread acknowledgment that even after last weeks debt swap that the country will in all probability need a third bailout, after economic data Friday showed that the economy shrank even more than first thought in fourth quarter, by 7.5pc.”

    In Germany lawyers said they were preparing a class action on behalf of 110 investors who want to sue banks for advising them to buy Greek debt. Bondmarket investors ignored political claims that the Greek crisis was solved: new Greek government bonds remained the highest yielding debt in the eurozone.

If Egypt is able to form any kind of practical and profitable alliance, say with Russia, then things could be markedly different. They would see all sorts of changes taking place in Egypt, asserting herself as a sovereign country in the region.

    Approval of Greece’s sovereign debt overhaul, the biggest bond restructuring on record, does not mean the worst is over for the euro zone despite buoyant markets, one of the top Royal Bank of Canada .. executives and other market watchers say.

    “The market is having to work through this crisis in successive waves,” Harry Samuel, chief executive officer of RBC’s European investment arm, said in an interview Wednesday in London.

    “The market has clearly moved through one wave of the crisis, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t more problems to come, both within Greece and other elements of the euro zone.”

    He is not alone in his views. In recent days, several analysts and economists have urged investors to stay cautious, suggesting that the Greek restructuring and the European Central Bank’s €1-trillion ($1.3-trillion) liquidity injection into the banking system have merely lulled the markets. The injection, some have said, is an “adrenalin rush” that could wear off fairly quickly.

    They fear Portugal could erupt and that Greece’s second bailout, combined with the bond “haircut” that eliminated more than €100-billion of national debt, are insufficient to keep the country out of the critical care ward for long.

    In a note, Société Générale economists James Nixon and Michel Martinez said that “significant doubts remain about the viability of the plan for Greece” and that Athens will probably not meet its fiscal deficit targets.

    “This practice of underestimating the fiscal multipliers simply because it is politically expedient is one of the reasons why it will only be a matter of time before Europe’s sovereign tensions re-emerge,” they said.

    There’s a general view out there that with private creditors having agreed their 50pc haircut, the “Greek problem” has been solved, at least for now. Unfortunately, it has not.

    According to Reuters, an unpublished “Compliance Report” by EU executives has concluded that Greece will have to impose a further fiscal squeeze in 2013/14 amounting to some 5.5pc of GDP in order to meet the targets that underpin the second international bailout. The chances of Greece being able to do this are about zero, though that is my conclusion, not that of the report.

    According to the report, the austerity measures already adopted by Athens should be enough to bring the primary deficit down to the agreed 1.5pc this year. However, “current projections reveal large fiscal gaps in 2013-14″. The projected shortfall is reckoned to be about 5.5pc of GDP. All this, of course, assumes that Greece achieves the output levels forecast by the Troika, the chances of which are again about zero. So in fact, the required squeeze will be even larger, further undermining growth and digging an even deeper hole.

    Unabashed, the report states that “substantial additional expenditure cuts will have to be announced and adopted by Greece in the coming months, in particular when Greece updates its medium-term budget in May 2012″.

    Where is Greece expected to find these cuts? Further savings in welfare payments, pharmaceutical spending, defense and restructuring of central and local administration are said to be under discussion. Has anyone told the Greek electorate, which is due to go the polls next month, about this? Apparently not.

  • The Greek debt problem has gotten worse. Fact: even though debt forgiveness amounted to around €100-billion they have taken on another €130-billion (bailout) of new debt! Ie. the amount of debt has increased by around €30-billion. It is a scam!

    Yesterday, a short but ominous press release was issued at the Commodities Futures Trading Commission. It said, “At the request of CME Clearing Europe Limited (CMECEL), pursuant to Section 7 of the Commodity Exchange Act, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission issued an Order on March 13, 2012, vacating the registration of CMECEL as a derivatives clearing organization.” (Click here for the CFTC press release.) In plain English, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) no longer wants to be the clearing house for European derivatives. The derivatives market in Europe must have been very lucrative for the company. After all, just the credit default swap (CDS) market is reportedly worth $50 trillion globally. (A CDS is a form of insurance. If there is a default, the debt is paid by the entity that sold the insurance contract.) I ask myself, why would the CME willingly stop being the clearing house for this profitable and large market?

    Just last week, it was reported there was a new Greek debt deal where 95% of the bondholders voluntarily agreed to take nearly a 75% loss on Greek debt. CNBC reported, “Greece successfully closed its bond swap offer to private creditors on Thursday, opening the way to securing the funding it needs to avert a messy default on its debt, according to several senior officials. . . . The biggest sovereign debt restructuring in history will see bond holders accept losses of some 74 percent on the value of their investments in a deal that will cut more than 100 billion euros from Greece’s crippling public debt.” Buried in the CNBC story was this little tidbit that said, “That would potentially trigger payouts on the credit default swaps (CDS) that some investors held on the bonds, an event which would have unknown consequences for the market.” (Click here for the complete CNBC story.)

    Developed economies are still experiencing an economic “hard landing” after the credit crunch, despite data showing small increases in gross domestic product. As a result, investors should worry more about the West than about China, which is managing its slowdown, a currency strategist told CNBC.com on Tuesday.

    Beijing announced recently that it has enough economic leeway to ease monetary policy, but it also introduced curbs to cool the real-estate sector. Those apparently mixed signals prompted some market watchers to say they were afraid of a sharp slowdown in the Chinese economy.

    “The bigger cycle we’re experiencing [in the West] is the result of the bursting of the credit bubble [in 2007],” Stephen Gallo, head of market analysis at Schneider Foreign Exchange, said in an interview. “This is what a hard landing looks like; I don’t know why people are so worried about China.”

    If central banks in Europe and the U.S. “were attacking and managing the problem” when they noticed the bubble in the property markets, the crisis would not have become so deep, Gallo said. He added that central banks could have set up rules on who could or could not get loans and used monetary policy to cool the red-hot real-estate markets.

    It will take a “very long” time for developed economies to get out of the hard landing phase as “it’s not just about deleveraging, it’s about credit channels not functioning,” he explained.

    And whilst you’re enjoying your dinner, incoming shells are landing all around you. Youth unemployment in Greece went through 50 per cent last week. That’s fine, carry on, serve the main course.

    And you will have seen yesterday that 110 German holders of Greek bonds are going to take legal action against the banks and against the Greek Government. But don’t worry chaps, carry on, everything is going to be fine.

    But perhaps the biggest bombshell is the German Finance Minister saying just yesterday nobody can exclude a third bailout. Pass the port. Do enjoy the party. I mean this is a farcical situation. And why is it happening? That’s what people in Europe want to know. Why is this happening?
