Gilad Atzmon: I write mainly for myself. I try to understand the world around me. A few years ago, I began to understand that a lot of people out there were also interested in the thoughts I indulge myself with, so I started to let other people have access into my boiling destructive mind.

Gilad Atzmon: No. For many years I have not bought newspapers. I am interested in the Middle East, and the mainstream media has very little to offer on that front. Probably the only expert within the British or even English-speaking media press is Robert Fisk. If I want to know what is happening in the Middle East I go to “Counterpunch”, “Information Clearing House”, “Veterans Today”, “Rense.com”, “Uprooted Palestinian”, “PalestineTelegraph”, “Palestine Chronicle”, “Dissident Voice”, “Uruknet”, and other reliable websites.

Gilad Atzmon: Yes it is irritating, but to a degree, that is what is to be expected — you have to remember that every form of discourse is, in practice, another set of boundaries. That may explain why the artist is far more effective than the Marxist agitator, or even the academic: while the Marxist or the academic are there to maintain the boundaries, the artist is there to present an alternative reality. My choice is obviously clear — I am an artist.

Gilad Atzmon: Interestingly, the Israeli press is not free; but it is still more open than the Western media. In spite of the censorship, it is still open to discussions about ‘Jewish questions,’ and it is noticeably more critical of the Israeli State than the Guardian, the New York Times or even the Socialist Worker. By the way, even the UK Zionist newspaper, The Jewish Chronicle (JC) is more open than the Guardian: it was in the JC that I read a report about David Miliband’s relentless attempts to amend the British universal Jurisdiction laws.

Silvia Cattori: Despite the harshness of your criticism against Israel, the Israeli daily Haaretz [2] or the Arte channel have not censored you. Is it the accomplished jazz musician or the Israeli opponent that appeals to the interest of the Media? Is it a sign that something has changed?
Gilad Atzmon: Both I guess. I may be interesting for them in different ways — perhaps I offer them an opportunity to express what they think, exactly where they lack the courage to say it themselves.

In the latest Israeli diplomatic attempt to stop the Gaza Freedom Flotilla, Israel leaned on the Obama administration to put heavy pressure on the Government of Turkey to refuse to allow Turkish ships to join the international citizen activist initiative to end Israel’s illegal blockade of Gaza. Israeli diplomats have been intimidating — threatening and cajoling countries in Europe, Canada and the United States in the past six weeks to dissuade their citizens from participating in the flotilla and to forbid ships to depart from their countries.

U.S. says challenging Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza is irresponsible and provocative”
On June 2, 2011 State Department spokesperson Mark Toner stated in the State Department’s daily press briefing that the United States told the Government of Turkey that a flotilla of ships sailing to Gaza to challenge the Israeli blockade would be an “act of provocation.” Toner said “We have made clear through the past year that groups and individuals who seek to break Israel’s maritime blockade of Gaza are taking irresponsible and provocative actions that entail a risk to their safety.”

Toner also said that “there are established and efficient mechanisms for getting humanitarian assistance through to Gaza, and that’s been our message consistently.”

As one of the organizers of the US Boat to Gaza called “Audacity of Hope,” one of the many ships from 22 organizing nations that will be filled with citizens from 70+ countries, I would have to say that Mr. Toner and the State Department don’t seem to have a clue about the goal of this flotilla.

The primary purpose of the flotilla is to bring massive international attention to the illegal and inhuman Israeli blockade of 1.5 million Palestinians in Gaza so that citizens will force their governments (primarily Israel’s chief defender the United States) to convince Israel that ending the blockade would be in its best security interest.

If Israel will end the blockade of Gaza and allow Palestinians to have freedom to travel, to have freedom to commerce to import and export and to live in dignity with human rights instead of absolute oppression through total control by Israel of virtually every aspect of life in Gaza, then the flotilla would not have to sail.

To use Mr. Toner’s phrase, the “irresponsible and provocative actions” are NOT the flotilla, but the Israeli government’s illegal blockade of Gaza, Israel’s 22-day attack on Gaza that two years ago killed 1,400 and wounded 5,000 and left much of Gaza in rubble and Israel’s relentless construction of illegal settlements that have reduced by one half the land allocated to Palestine in the 1947 creation of the state of Israel through the partition of the Palestine Mandate that left 800,000 Palestinians dispossessed and homeless.

The “irresponsible and provocative actions” are the Israeli apartheid walls that separate Palestinians from their agricultural lands, schools and businesses and the inhumane and degrading Israeli checkpoints that Palestinians must pass through on their own Palestinian land.

Who is “Acting Out of Hate?”
On June 1, 2011, Israeli Defense Force (IDF) Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Benny Gantz said that flotilla organizers “are acting out of hate, with the intent to create provocation and agitate spirits, not out of any desire to assist Gaza’s population.”

After having been in the flotilla’s international coalition meetings for over seven months, I can say categorically that none of the organizers of any of the ships in the flotilla are acting out of hate for the State of Israel. I have never heard any words of hate for anyone or for any group in our meetings. Instead, I have heard profound dismay that our governments have not acted to convince Israel that its best security practice would be to not treat Palestinians with contempt and disdain. The non-violent strategy of international activists in confronting Israel and governments that allow themselves to be impotent in addressing Israeli brutality toward Palestinians mirrors the incredible non-violent struggle of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank as they face daily humiliations and gratuitous disrespect from Israeli soldiers and politicians.

Instead, many of the organizers are Jews who are willing to criticize the policies of the State of Israel that they believe are antithetical to the teachings of Judaism, if they are religious Jews or are illegal, if they are secular Jews. The US Boat to Gaza will have some American Jews as passengers, including 85-year-old Hedy Epstein whose family was killed by Germans, not Palestinians, during World War II.

UN Special Rapporteur on Palestinian Human Rights takes on UN Secretary General over the Gaza Flotilla
In a June 2, 2011 article titled “A UN Secretary General vs. Freedom Flotilla 2,” United Nations Special Rapporteur on Palestinian Human Rights Richard Falk described Israeli treatment of Palestinians in Gaza “(Israeli treatment of Palestinians)…is an extraordinary narrative of Israeli cruelty and deafening international silence. UK economic recovery on the verge of collapse

The prospect of Britain’s economy moving decisively into recovery mode were dealt another blow yesterday, with two new reports highlighting mounting difficulties.

Markit, the analyst that compiles the closely watched monthly surveys of activity in the services, manufacturing and construction sectors, said its latest research suggested the UK economy was on target to record growth of just 0.3 per cent during the second quarter of the year, even more disappointing than the first quarter’s 0.5 per cent.

Figures published by Markit yesterday showed that the services sector, which accounts for more than two-thirds of Britain’s economy, continued to grow last month, but at a much slower rate. The purchasing managers at services companies, who Markit surveys to compile a picture of activity in the sector, said their businesses expanded in May at their slowest rate for three months.

The downbeat services survey follows the depressed picture Markit revealed of the manufacturing sector earlier this week, with economists warning that the extra bank holidays last month could not fully account for the setbacks.

Chris Williamson, Markit’s chief economist, warned that the Bank of England’s most recent forecasts for economic performance this year, which had to be downgraded from its earlier estimates, might have to be cut once again. “There is an increased risk that growth in 2011 will fall below the 1.8 per cent expansion forecast in the latest Bank of England forecast,” he said.

While Markit’s assessment of the construction sector’s performance in May, published on Thursday, wasslightly better, that industry is recovering from unprecedented lows – and only very slowly.

The Office for National Statistics said yesterday that the number of new orders for construction work fell by 23 per cent during the first three months of the year, the steepest decline the industry has experienced since 1987. Construction companies believe the slow down reflects the beginning of public sector cuts and expect their output to be muted for the rest of the year.

Vicky Redwood, an economist at the think tank Capital Economics, said the latest data “provided further evidence that the recovery is still struggling”.

It is far better for Greece to default now than later, after the Iluminist banksters have stolen all their hard assets and national treasures. The Illuminist banksters are forcing a fire sale of Greek assets via misnomer like: privatization. Private bankster debts have been shoved upon the public who are not responsible for it. In Greece, government debt is forecast to reach about 170pc of GDP. The cheapest debt Greece can acquire comes through the European Union, and will cost some 5 to 6pc.

So, even if the EU were willing to take on all of Greece’s debts, Greece would be paying more than 10pc of GDP in debt interest. Of course, the EU isn’t going to do anything like that. No plausible market interest rate is going to be less than twice that level. So to repay its debts, Greece would have to be willing, for decades, to devote well above 10pc, perhaps closer to 20pc of GDP simply to paying interest.

The economists’ rule of thumb is that if interest payments reach 12pc of GDP, a normal economy will default. But Greece is in no way normal. The Greeks have a long tradition of defaulting, having been in default for about half of the years since the modern Greek state began in 1830.

In the past week, thousands of protestors have occupied a large square in Athens, condemning their politicians as “thieves”and (hopefully jokingly) threatening to eat them. Two orthodox church bishops have called for a revolution. Communists have occupied the finance ministry. Greek cross-party talks on the austerity programme have broken down. And the CIA has warned that additional austerity measures could potentially trigger a coup.

Even if they did, against all the odds, choose to try to pay, it would be futile anyway, for the Greeks are certain to be ejected from the euro by 2013 if they have not chosen to leave beforehand. From 2013, there is to be a new financial architecture in the EU: a new, more formal bail-out mechanism with a new bail-out fund; a formal procedure for private sector holders of sovereign debt to take “haircuts” (i.e. lose some of their money); a new system for bank bondholders to be vulnerable to debt-equity swaps in the event that banks get into trouble; and a revision to the Treaty due to be ratified by the end of 2012, intended to place all this on a more secure footing.
