  UFOs to Bring ‘Great Events,’ Chinese Scientist Predicts
  (Oct. 6) – All those UFOs that have been spotted around China this year, closing down airports and causing general flying saucer mayhem and wonder, are on the increase. And “great events” will soon follow, an astronomer says.
   
  “First, I’d like to say something about the conception of ‘great events about UFOs,’” Wang Sichao, a planetary astronomer at Purple Mountain Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told the Beijing Review.
   
  “It does not mean large numbers of UFOs but refers to events of credible facts backed by observation. But these facts cannot yet be explained by existing scientific knowledge or natural phenomena,” he told the English-language weekly.
   
  Those are strong pro-UFO words from a scientist who, in September, dismissed UFO sightings over Hong Kong as “ghost images” — reflections of outdoor lamps caught by camera lenses.
   
  Wang has investigated UFO sightings in China for nearly 40 years and described the many types of unidentified objects that have been seen: “bolide, light spot, spiral, fan, bright star, flying rod, ball lightning and V-shaped.”
   
  The astronomer has a theory as to why, over so many decades, there hasn’t been much progress in available UFO information — presuming some UFOs are a type of extraordinary vehicle.
   
  “The reason is that a UFO only appears randomly and often disappears rapidly in a few minutes. By the time large professional telescopes are started up, it has already disappeared. So, we can only rely on information from occasional sightings or encounters by observers,” he said.
   
  “Astronomers all over the world are now intensifying their efforts to explore extraterrestrial life. As long as we have open minds about scientific exploration of the unknown and employ multiple methods, the contact between humans and extraterrestrial life will, hopefully, come this century.”

  Life Extension Technologies To Facilitate Elite Technocracy

  The development of successful life-extension technologies will be a reality within 30 years, but the application of such stunning advances will be tightly restricted by a ruling elite, and eventually may be used as a justification to completely wipe out humanity, according to some of the scientific community’s leading pioneers.
   
  A recent article carried by the Methuselah Foundation, an organization that advocates the development of life extension and nanomachinery technology, concludes that life-extension technology and “(greatly) augmenting our biology with nanomachinery” will have arrived by the 2030′s, but that “The new bio- and nanotechnologies of the 2040s will be massive overkill for the “simple” task of repairing the damage of aging.”
   
  The report concludes that the greatest obstacle in the field is not the development but the application of such technology, suggesting that living for hundreds of years is inevitable only for the wealthy elite.
    
  Pressure groups pushing for more widespread funding of life-extension technology research seem to be constantly frustrated by the fact that major global scientific institutions seek to contain progress within very selective parameters and are very reticent to encourage more open access to the field. Those who advocate the necessity to mainstream life-extension technology research are keen to tackle the red herring of overpopulation, which is often cited as a reason to restrict the availability of such advances.
   
  As the Fight Aging organization is keen to stress, the specter of overpopulation is a con game used by the elite to keep their subservient and enslaved population in poverty. The fact is that population growth naturally declines and reverses with increasing wealth, industrialization and the creation of a strong middle class.
   
  So it turns out that if 5% of the United States were converted into urban area with a population density of 6,000/km2, and 45% were converted into suburban area with a population density of 2,000/km2, with the remaining 50% left for rural area, parks, and farms, there would be enough room for 3 billion in the urban areas, and 9 billion in the suburban areas, for a total population of 12 billion. This is in the US alone. This scheme could be extended to the other countries and continents for a total population of around 100 billion. Everything between the Arctic and Antarctic circles are potential targets for colonization. This is about 130,000,000 km2 of land area (the circumpolar regions have about 20,000,000 km2 of land).
   
  The planet would be perfectly able to sustain many more billions than currently occupy the earth if third world nations were allowed to industrialize and raise their living standards, but the elite, keen to protect a policy that exploits the third world and plunders their resources, are loathe to accept this and thus have to resort to scaremongering about the population bomb in order to maintain the status quo.
   
  But there’s another reason why the architects of the eugenics movement and the global warming bandwagon need to promulgate the hoax of the population bomb – to restrict access to life extension technologies, and pave the way for the “overkill” that their use will be directed towards during the second stage of their development.
   
  Once a monopoly on the development of these new technologies is guaranteed, the stage will be set for the elite to render humanity all but obsolete and begin their long desired final solution - the elimination of the vast majority if not all of the human population. As Sun Microsystems founder Bill Joy outlines in his essay, Why The Future Doesn’t Need Us, once every aspect of human society is automated and operated solely by machines and robots – a foregone conclusion according to most futurists – and control of the machines is concentrated within a tiny elite, the rest of us will be superfluous and subject to elimination.
   
  Since those without access to the life-extension technologies will be considered luddites and nothing more than a burden on the utopian technocracy that the elite have crafted, our fate is sealed. The only other plausible scenario is that a small number of humans who are permitted to survive will be biologically or psychologically engineered by the same automated system the elite have created, meaning our roles will hold little more significance than domesticated animals.

  Dollar set for sharp decline, Goldman forecasts
  The dollar will embark on a sharp decline over the next 12 months, Goldman Sachs forecast on Wednesday, as policy makers in Washington look poised to press the trigger on another round of printing money.
    
  The investment bank expects the dollar to drop to $1.79 against the pound in six months and $1.85 in 12 months. Sterling closed at $1.5891 in London yesterday. The euro won’t be spared either, with the dollar’s slump forcing it to $1.50 six months from now and $1.55 in a year’s time.
   
  Powered by President Obama’s stimulus package and a rebound in inventories, the US recovery peaked in the final three months of last year and has been slowing ever since. As the summer delivered a diet of weak economic data, the conviction has strengthened among a growing number of officials at the Federal Reserve that it should risk another bout of quantitative easing – printing money to inject into the economy.

  BRITS SAY ISRAEL STAGED 1976 HIJACKING
  Famed Israeli Raid on Entebbe Airport Culminated Shin Bet-Staged Hijacking Plot. Documents recently made public by the British government reveal that Israel played a direct role in the notorious hijacking of an Air France plane to Idi Amin�s Entebbe in 1976 and cooperated with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) in staging the event remembered today as �the Entebbe Incident.�
   
  In documents recently released and now sitting in the National Archives in London, D.H. Colvin�a British diplomat working in Paris�wrote that, according to sources he knew, �the hijacking was the work of the PFLP, with help from the Israeli Secret Service, the Shin Bet.�
   
  �The operation was designed to torpedo the PLO�s standing in France� and to prevent a �growing rapprochement between the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and the Americans,� he said. �My contact said the PFLP had attracted all sorts of wild elements, some of whom had been planted by the Israelis. .. . Their [the Israelis�] nightmare is that after the November elections, one will witness the imposition in the Middle East of a Pax Americana, which will be to the advantage of the PLO, who will gain international respectability and perhaps the right to establish a state on evacuated territories and to the disadvantage of Israel, who will be forced to evacuate occupied territory.�
   
  The hijacking, or the �Entebbe Incident� as it is popularly known, gripped the attention of the world for nearly a week at that time. Hijackers seized an Air France plane bound for Paris via Athens shortly after it took off. The plane was diverted first to Benghazi, Libya, where it was refueled before going on to Entebbe, Uganda. In Entebbe, the hijackers released most of the hostages but kept 98 people, most of them Israeli citizens, and threatened to kill them unless Israel met their demands of releasing some 50 Palestinian prisoners held in Israel and in other places around the world.
   
  In a dramatic rescue that has been the subject of several books and at least 4 films, Israeli commandos flew to the airport where shortly thereafter a 36-minute battle was fought with the hijackers and Ugandan soldiers. In the end, six of the hijackers, 45 Ugandan soldiers, three hostages, and Col. Jonathan Netanyahu (commanding officer of the Israeli commandos and elder brother of Benjamin Netanyahu) were killed.
   
  POISON OPINION
  In the recently released document, the British diplomat went further in his analysis of the event, saying that Israel wanted to poison French opinion with regard to the Palestinian cause, for which the French had traditionally held a certain amount of sympathy. According to his analysis of the situation, Israel wished to make the threat�implicit but nevertheless clear�that terrorism is something that can happen in Europe just as easily as it happens in the Middle East.
   
  The PFLP said to be responsible for this incident was founded by a Lebanese-educated Palestinian Christian named Dr. George Habash. Unlike the larger, centrist and more nationalistic Fatah movement of the PLO, the PFLP is a far left, Marxist-Leninist movement designated by several governments including that of the United States as a terrorist organization. Since the late 1960s it has been credited with dozens of high-profile events, including hijackings and bombings.
   
  Along with the United States and Britain, Israel has a long and well-established history of assisting individuals and groups said to be responsible for acts of terrorism since the creation of the Jewish state in 1948. 
    
  British document: Israel initiated Entebbe hijack
  Official government file quotes unnamed source as claiming Shin Bet cooperated with Air France flight’s hijackers, PFLP group, in instigating crisis in bid to weaken PLO 
    
  The state of Israel was behind the hijacking of an Air France plane to Entebbe in 1976, and cooperated with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine in staging the affair, a UK government file compiled at the time of the occurrences and published by the BBC Friday revealed. 
   
  According to the file released by the National Archives, an unnamed contact told a British diplomat in Paris that the Shin Bet and the PFLP collaborated to seize the plane, which was hijacked in Athens and flown to Entebbe in Uganda, where 98, most of hem Israelis, were held hostage. 
   
  The crisis was brought to an end after Israeli commandos stormed the airport. Three Israeli hostages and one Israeli commander, Yonatan Netanyahu, were killed during the raid. In the document, written on 30 June 1976 when the crisis was still unresolved, DH Colvin of the Paris Embassy wrote that according to his source, “the hijack was the work of the PFLP, with help from the Israeli Secret Service, the Shin Bet.

  Yes, says Victor Ostrovsky, a former Israeli secret agent. In a new book, By Way of Deception: A Devastating Insider’s Portrait of the Mossad, Mr. Ostrovsky says the Israelis had advance notice of the suicide attack that killed 241 Marines in Beirut in October 1983 but withheld the information from the United States in the hope that the attack would poison American Arab relations.  
   
  The Israeli government is desperately trying to block publication of the book, which also says the Israelis are “actively spying, recruiting, organizing and carrying out covert activities mainly in New York and Washington, which they refer to as their playground.” Although it can hardly succeed and will probably backfire, the censorship attempt enjoyed initial success in both the U.S. and Canada. Obliging courts in both countries have ordered that the book be at least temporarily suppressed When it comes to Israel, freedom of speech and of the press is considerably less than total, even in America.
   
  Mr. Ostrovsky says Israeli agents heard he had written the book and tried to bribe and threaten him to dissuade him from going into print. He is now in hiding. More than 17,000 copies of By Way of Deception are in print, and many reviewers have already received copies. If the book divulges sensitive information, as the Israelis’ lawyers say, it’s too late to stop other governments from getting it. The only purpose of the censorship is to stop Americans from reading Mr. Ostrovsky’s account of how Israel allowed U.S. Marines to be slaughtered. 
    
  Books are rarely suppressed in America (at least not by direct government intervention), and by the time you read this, By Way of Deception will almost certainly be unshackled. Then the Israelis will have to either discredit the author or argue, as they did in the case of the spy Jonathan Pollard, that the decision to let the Marines be killed was a “rogue” action.
    
  Mr. Ostrovsky’s allegations should be shocking. Letting the troops of a benefactor nation be blown up in their own compound is hardly the act of a “reliable ally,” as Israel is said to be. But you have to wonder whether anyone will really be shocked. The act would be consistent with a long pattern of reprehensible Israeli behavior toward the U.S. Some of it has been widely publicized; no doubt the largest part of it has never been discovered.
     
  If anyone ought to be stunned, it’s the many pundits who echo Israeli propaganda to the effect that Israel is America’s only valuable and trustworthy ally in the Middle East. If they mean what they say, they should be publicly changing their minds, or at least demanding a thorough investigation into Israeli conduct toward this country. 
   
  Congress ought to be shocked, too, to the extent that its all-out support for Israel has been sincere rather than venal and cowardly. But how many of our elected representatives will dare, or care, to ask tough questions about whether our ties to Israel have done serious damage to this country’s interests? 
   
  Such questions are not only long overdue, they are especially urgent right now, when the United States may be on the verge of a full-scale war in the Middle East, and the Israel lobby is eager to see America launch hostilities against Israel’s chief enemy, Iraq. 
     
  The path of least resistance is to say nothing, to go on pretending that the interests of the U.S. and of Israel are virtually identical, to keep repeating that Israel is our “reliable ally” and “strategic asset.” Any politician or journalist who says otherwise, even for the good of America, does so at risk to his career. That’s why there is so little open debate on these matters. Even our press isn’t fully free. And now the Israeli government has mounted a direct attack on press freedom in America itself. It will be instructive to see whether the press corps goes on acting un shocked.

  The Six Days War
  The official and not entirely accurate account of the causes of the war, as put forth by then Israeli Foreign Minister Abba Eban, was that neighboring Arab states got together, behind the leadership of Egypt’s President Gamal Abdal Nasser, to try and destroy the state of Israel. Responding to this “existential threat,” Israel struck preemptively at the Arab armies that stood poised to crush it. Eban states the provocation starting the war to be Egypt’s closure of the Straits of Tiran to Israeli shipping in violation of international law, and Egypt’s reoccupation of the Sinai. Thus Eban argues, “Israel waged her defensive struggle in pursuit of two objectives- security and peace[1].” 
             
  As Norman Finkelstein points out, this position has problems. First, Israel was not a blameless victim of yet another irrational Arab vendetta. For instance, in the Samu incident in 1966, an IDF unit of 4,000 men attacked the West Bank village of Samu (under Jordanian control), destroyed 125 houses, and killed eighteen Jordanian soldiers[2]. Israel was not at war with Jordan at the time. In April 1967, Israel downed 6 Syrian MIGs, and army chief of staff Yitzhak Rabin announced on army radio that, “the time is coming when we will march on Damascus to overthrow the Syrian government[3].” If Arab states were using nasty rhetoric about Israel, they weren’t doing so in a vacuum.
             
  Further, the facts fail to support Eban’s “defensive war for peace” claim. Nor for that matter was there anything resembling an “existential threat.” American president Lyndon Johnson told Eban only days before war broke out that according to American intelligence, “[I]f Egypt attacks, you’ll whip the hell out of them.[4]” Menachem Begin, present at a meeting with defense ministers shortly before the war began, later recalled that IDF commanders “had no doubts of victory.” General Rabin declared that Nasser’s troops in the Sinai “would not have been enough to unleash an offensive. He knew it and we knew it.[5]” The head of Mossad, Meit Amit, declared, “Egypt was not ready for a war; and Nasser did not want a war.” Finally, if Israel was interested in peace, why did it launch an attack two days before Egypt’s vice president was due in Washington for talks on the status of the Straits of Tiran, the alleged casus belli of the war[6]?

  June 5, 1967: Israeli committed its biggest, most treacherous and premeditated aggression against Egypt, Syria and Jordan. After destroying Arab aircraft on the ground in a lightening attack, Israeli forces invaded and occupied the rest of Palestine, that is, the West Bank, Gaza Strip, East Jerusalem, the Syrian Golan Heights and the Egyptian Sinai Peninsula. In the first days of its aggression and in plain disregard of the truth, Israel fabricated a charge of aggression against its victims and presented it in a dramatic manner to the U.N. Security Council. Western media spread this fabricated story and the whole world sympathized with the supposed victim. In 1967 the Israeli’s made a third ruthless blitzkrieg attack upon the Arabs. This time they deliberately destroyed three quarters of a million dollar’s worth of church property.
   
  The great deception practiced by Israel on the U.N. and the whole world is now completely discredited, the Israelis, therefore, changed their tactics and rely nowadays on the argument that, they were NOT attacked by Egypt, they were in danger of BEING attacked, and hence they resorted to a so-called pre-emptive strike. Alan Hart quotes a former Israeli Director of military intelligence as telling him “if Nasser had not given Israel the excuse to attack the Arabs, Israel would have invented a pretext for war within six or ten months” because its military planners had decided that the time had come to knock out vast amounts of mainly Soviet-supplied Arab armor. Yitzhak Rabin, who as chief of staff planned this attack told Le Monde in February 1968, quite simply: “We knew that Nasser did not intend to attack.” 
    
  “Greed for the Land” How the Six Day War Changed the Middle East
  …The outcome of the Six Day War also contributed to a historical narrative–largely based on myth–that has colored Western perceptions of Israel and the Middle East since. The image of plucky little Israel, threatened with destruction, winning a smashing victory in a pre-emptive war against its more powerful neighbors, has become commonplace.Yet subsequent historical research has shown that Israel was well aware of its military superiority over its neighbors, and that its long-term strategic plans in the region led it to goad its neighbors into a war it knew it would win.
   
  In a 1997 New York Times interview, Moshe Dayan, defense minister during the 1967 war, explained that Israeli settlers’ “greed for the land” led them to provoke the Syrian army to shoot at them, opening the way for the Israeli invasion and seizure of the Golan Heights.
   
  Likewise, the main casus belli for the war–Egypt’s closing of the Straits of Tiran and its military buildup in the Sinai–amounted more to bluff than threat. In a 1982 speech to the Israeli National Defense College, then-Prime Minister Menachem Begin said: “The Egyptian army concentrations in the Sinai approaches do not prove that [Egyptian President] Nasser was about to attack us. We must be honest with ourselves. We decided to attack him.”

• Unfortunately, things are not so simple. Carried to its logical conclusion, competitive currency devaluations will destroy fiat currency. The economy grinds to a halt when its fiat currency is worthless. Hyperinflation kicks in and it is hello Weimar Republic.
   
  How A High-Speed Yuan Revaluation Could Force China Into A Crash
  Because of US and European pressure Beijing may allow much faster appreciation of the renminbi than it likes over the next year, but this will almost certainly be accompanied with policies that reduce the adverse employment impact.  In my opinion the most likely such policy involves credit.  If Beijing expands cheap credit, however, it may exacerbate dangerous imbalances within the economy. 
   
  Before explaining, let me suggest why I think we are going to see much faster renminbi appreciation.  Part of the reason has to do with what looks like good economic numbers.  The real estate market seems to be recovering, manufacturing is doing well, and Chinese growth is strong.

  Currency wars
  So the trade environment will continue to deteriorate and continue to take center stage.  By now everyone is probably aware of the remarkable statement last week from Brazil’s finance minister.  Here is the Financial Times version:
   
  An “international currency war” has broken out, according to Guido Mantega, Brazil’s finance minister, as governments around the globe compete to lower their exchange rates to boost competitiveness.
   
  Mr Mantega’s comments in São Paulo on Monday follow a series of recent interventions by central banks, in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan in an effort to make their currencies cheaper. China, an export powerhouse, has continued to suppress the value of the renminbi, in spite of pressure from the US to allow it to rise, while officials from countries ranging from Singapore to Colombia have issued warnings over the strength of their currencies.
   
  “We’re in the midst of an international currency war, a general weakening of currency. This threatens us because it takes away our competitiveness,” Mr Mantega said. By publicly asserting the existence of a “currency war”, Mr Mantega has admitted what many policymakers have been saying in private: a rising number of countries see a weaker exchange rate as a way to lift their economies.
   
  What is remarkable is not that Mr. Mantega has said something that we didn’t know, but rather that someone so senior has said what everyone has avoided saying for so long.  The Europeans, too, have entered the fray more aggressively and are complaining about a rising euro.  We are certainly in a global beggar-thy-neighbor process, in which the first round, just like in the 1930s, takes place as currency intervention, and the second round will take place as tariffs.
   
  I have always argued that the only way to avoid a real deterioration in trade relations is for the major economies to come to a grand bargain and agree to adjust over an eight to ten year period, although I have also always been very pessimistic that this would happen, but it seems perhaps President Sarkozy is making a valiant attempt to do just that.  From an article in Saturday’s Financial Times:
   
  France and China have been in talks for the past year as part of an effort by Paris to heighten co-ordination of exchange rates to promote stability of the international monetary system in the wake of the financial crisis.
   
  The talks and their content have been kept secret, in an attempt to draw China into a discussion on global currency co-ordination, a subject that Beijing has been reluctant to countenance in the past. In an ambitious move reminiscent of the currency accords of the 1980s, President Nicolas Sarkozy hopes to open a debate on the subject when France takes over the presidency of the G20 group of leading nations in November, according to people familiar with the matter.

  …. the US House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a bill to press China to let its currency rise faster.  Although this bill does not bind President Obama in any way, and might not even survive a WTO challenge, it is nonetheless pretty clear that the world is tilting inexorably towards more trade conflict.
   
  So the renminbi must rise
  After all everyone is already doing it – cheating on trade, that is.  The big surplus countries are dragging their feet on enacting the kinds of policies that will increase domestic demand and so reduce the drag on global growth caused by their deficient demand.  The big deficit countries are either in collapse (Europe) or are warily eyeing the amount of their domestic demand that leaks abroad to create foreign jobs (the US).  In a world of beggar-thy-neighbor policies and anemic global demand growth, countries that do not retaliate will almost certainly see rising unemployment.
   
  So that is why I think pressure on the renminbi is inexorable.  The way the numbers work, I see only three options.  First, the US can allow its trade deficit to explode.  Second, the world can organize a concerted attempt to deal with imbalances.  Or third, each country can continue implementing policies aimed at acquiring a larger share of dwindling global demand.
   
  The first two, I think, are unlikely, and so I suspect the renminbi issue will not go away.  But excessive focus on currencies and tariffs is likely to make a bad situation worse, and this is what I really want to discuss today.  Currencies matter to trade, and it is strange to see the gyrations among many economists who try to deny it.
   
  Most notable, I think, is the complete reversal of official opinion in Japan.  Twenty years ago when it was the undervalued yen that was at the center of trade disputes, Japanese officials were adamant that currency intervention has nothing to do with trade imbalances (the problem is “structural” everyone insisted).  But after the PBoC started intervening against the yen a few months ago, suddenly Japanese officials have decided that in fact currency intervention matters a great deal to trade.
   
  Perhaps to someone more cynical that I am the reversal in Japanese opinion is not so surprising.  As Tokyo seems to have discovered, currencies do indeed matter.  The level of the currency has a big impact on the relationship between domestic production and consumption, and of course the difference between the two is the savings rate, which determines the trade surplus (i.e. the excess of savings over investment).
   
  For that reason I am always puzzled by people who say that devaluing the dollar will have no impact on the US trade deficit because the problem is low savings relative to investment.  No, that is not the problem.  That is simply one of the definitions of a current account deficit.  But if the dollar devalues, and consumer prices rise, US consumption is likely to decline.  In addition, to the extent that any of the stuff Americans used to import before the devaluation is now produced domestically (not all, but any), then US production must rise.  Since savings is equal to production minus consumption, the US savings rate must automatically rise.
   
  But just because the currency matters to trade, it does not mean that it is the only thing that matters, or even the most important thing that matters.  Anything that affects the level of production, the level of consumption, or the level of investment, will automatically affect the trade balance.
   
  This is why I worry that we are putting too much pressure on the renminbi.  There are many ways for China to rebalance, and they all involve the same process of transferring income from producers to households.  Raising the value of the renminbi, for example, increases the real value of household income in China by reducing the cost of imports.
   
  It balances this by lowering the profitability of exporters.  The net result is that if it is done carefully, the household income share of China’s GDP rises when the renminbi is revalued, and with it consumption rises too.  Since China must export the difference between what it produces and what it consumes or invests, raising the value of the currency also reduces China’s trade surplus.
   
  But what would happen if China were to raise the currency too quickly?  In that case the profitability of the export sector would decline so quickly that exporters would be forced either into bankruptcy or into moving their facilities abroad to lower-wage countries.  Either way, they would have to fire local workers
   
  But firing workers reduces household income and household consumption. If it reduces household income faster than the revaluation increases real household income (by lowering import prices), the net result is a reduction in total household income and a reduction in household consumption.
   
  Balancing and unbalancing
  This is the problem China faces.  It must raise the value of the renminbi as part of its rebalancing towards greater domestic consumption, but if it does so too quickly, the rebalancing will occur not as an increase in consumption relative to rising production, but rather as a drop in production relative to declining consumption.
   
  This may seem like a confusing point, but it is worth understanding.  China can rebalance with high unemployment as well as with low unemployment, and the difference has to do with the speed of the rebalancing.  If China adjusts too quickly, consumption will actually decline, and production will decline even faster.  In that case China rebalances (consumption rises as a share of GDP), but under conditions of rising unemployment.
   
  That is why too much focus on the currency is dangerous.  It is clear that the US and Europe have become very impatient with the slow adjustment process in China, made all the worse by a European crisis which is almost certain to cause the European trade surplus to surge.  Every major economy in the world, including China, is implicitly expecting US consumption to drive employment growth, as Premier Wen more or less told President Obama last week, but with soaring unemployment the US is in no mood to divert its own demand abroad.
   
  And so there is a good chance that the US will overreact, and will use the threat of tariffs to force the renminbi to appreciate much faster than China can absorb.  Even Tim Geithner seems to think that we will see much faster appreciation.  Here is what an article in Friday’s Financial Times said:
   
  Tim Geithner, US Treasury secretary, said the renminbi was on track for significant appreciation against the dollar and there would be no “trade war” or “currency war” between the US and China. So after years of dragging its feet, postponing a rebalancing, and forcing rising trade surpluses onto the rest of the world, China may have to adjust its currency policies so quickly that it risks a sharp contraction at home.  So what will China do?
   
  This, for me, is the most interesting and perhaps important question.  Most probably Beijing will do the same thing Tokyo did after the Plaza Accords and Beijing did after the renminbi began appreciating in 2005.  It will lower real interest rates and force credit expansion.
   
  This of course will have the effect of unwinding the impact of the renminbi appreciation.  As some Chinese manufacturers (in the tradable goods sector) lose competitiveness because of the rising renminbi, others (in the capital intensive sector) will regain it because of even lower financing costs.  Jobs lost in one sector will be balanced with jobs gained in the other.
   
  But there will be a hidden cost to this strategy – perhaps a huge one.  The revaluing renminbi will shift income from exporters to households, as it should, but cheaper financing costs will shift income from households (who provide most of the country’s net savings) to the large companies that have access to bank credit.  So China won’t really rebalance, because this requires a real and permanent increase in the household share of GDP.  Instead what will happen is that it will reduce Chinese overdependence on exports and increase China’s even greater overdependence on investment.
   
  This will not benefit China.  It will fuel even more real estate, manufacturing and infrastructure overcapacity without having rebalanced consumption.  Expect, for example, even more ships, steel, and chemicals in a world that really does not want any more.
   
  So we are still pretty much stuck.  China and other surplus countries like Germany and Japan need to understand that their policies are causing real damage in the US, and the US needs to understand that the surplus countries simply cannot adjust fast enough to suit the US, but neither side is very interested in understanding the other.
   
  An optimal solution will require real grown-up behavior on the part of the major economies, who must agree to resolve the trade imbalances carefully and with determination.  Of course grown-up behavior is probably too much to ask from countries that have displayed so little of it to date.  Instead trade relationships will simply continue to deteriorate.

  Race to the bottom in currency markets
  If there’s been one mantra among political and economic leaders since the financial crisis rocked the world two years ago, it’s been to avoid protectionist policies at all costs. History tells us …. that it was the headlong rush among countries into protectionist trade policies after the stock market crash of 1929 and subsequent financial crisis that sent the world spiraling into the Great Depression in the 1930s.
    
  With everybody hoarding their chips, economies from the U.S. to Europe and Asia effectively shut down. So that’s been what political and economic leaders have warned against in every speech and conference since Lehman Brothers collapsed. And that’s what they’ll warn against at this weekend’s International Monetary Fund meeting in Washington, D.C., also. But unless some historic agreement can be whipped up among the canapes and photo ops during the weekend, that’s right where the world is heading, pell-mell.
   
  Japan’s frantic attempts to stem the yen’s rise in the past month — first with a currency intervention and then with a surprise cut in interest rates — are the latest and most dramatic examples of countries trying to fight off the ravaging effects of the falling dollar on their economies and trade scenarios.
    
  Brazil, Australia, Israel, Canada and even Switzerland, to name a few, are all struggling with higher currencies that hurt their exports; some are trying to balance the loss in competitiveness abroad with much-needed hikes in interest rates at home as their economies begin to recover. Meanwhile, even as the U.S. and Europe begin to take out the big guns in their battle to convince China to slash the value of its renminbi, we are … happy to watch the dollar fall and keep the euro from rising … so we can try to export our own ways out of recession, even though that’s never worked before.
   
  Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner raised the stakes in the showdown with China on Wednesday, blaming the country for the beginnings of what some media and economists are now calling a currency war. The term “currency war” made some good headlines this week, but it’s probably too strong for where we are right now. If the U.S., Europe and China start slinging trade arrows to punish one another, then we are in danger of a 1930s-style meltdown.
   
  In the meantime, stocks are rocking and gold is soaring on low rates and weak currencies as central bankers rush to declare that they will buy as many bonds as needed to keep bond yields — i.e. interest rates — low.
    
  Stock bulls see the low rates stimulating corporate borrowing and hope it will spread to consumers. Gold bugs see the low rates ultimately creating massive inflation and a run from all currencies into the precious metal. Both scenarios are possible. But a third one is that, at some point, a sign of economic growth and the end of easy money will ignite a massive run out of bonds and shake global markets, stocks, commodities, currencies and derivatives alike.
   
  That’s the risk. As long as the battle to keep money flowing escalates, the reversal could be all the more painful. No major central bank wants to be the first to prick this bubble. Some commentators claim their stubbornness will cost them their independence from government control at some point. I don’t know. But I sure miss the days of the German Bundesbank thumbing its nose at the political winds in Bonn twice a month in the 1990s and maintaining its own anti-inflationary stance with as high rates as it thought necessary.
   
  The banks are trapped, and so promising calm and lining up the money machines. The politicians are trapped, so loudly blaming each other in different countries. The consumers are trapped without jobs. Which brings us to companies, and to corporate earnings season.
    
  With an 11th-hour deal to align currency expectations globally this weekend increasingly unlikely, the markets will only have third-quarter corporate earnings to look forward to next week. Estimates point to a weaker-than-expected season overall, but you never know. Financial earnings will be crucial.
   
  The debate about a tipping point in the global economy is about to be settled, one way or another. But if we continue heading down the currency road to ruin, history will not be on our side.

  UFO closes Chinese airport
  An airport in Baotou, Inner Mongolia, was forced to shut to prevent passenger jets crashing into a UFO, according to reports. Three flights to Baotou from Shanghai and Beijing were reportedly forced to circle the airport until the UFO disappeared.
   
  Two other flights were diverted away from Baotou and to the nearby cities of Ordos and Taiyuan. The airport was shut for around an hour “to guarantee safety” according to a spokesman. Witnesses reported a bright light shining in the sky on September 11 around two-and-a-half miles away from Baotou airport, before suddenly vanishing. The incident was the eighth reported UFO sighting in China since the end of June.
   
  Xiaoshan International airport near the eastern city of Hangzhou was shut down on July 8 because of a UFO, although officials later confirmed the object sighted above the airport had been part of a military test at a nearby airbase. In the far-western province of Xinjiang, another sighting on June 30 is thought to have been a missile test. A number of sightings in Sichuan province may also be linked to the local custom of flying illuminated kites at night.
