  Israeli army crosses into Lebanon: state media
  BEIRUT, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) — An Israeli army unit on Sunday crossed the borders with Lebanon in the direction of the occupied part of al-Ghajar village, Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported. ”An intense Israeli build-up of forces during the past 24 hours has been observed along the eastern sector of the Blue Line, with mobile and fixed patrols,” said NNA. It added that “Israeli tank emplacements were spotted amid intense overflights by helicopter gunships and warplanes.” 
   
  “Earlier, an Israeli mechanized infantry unit comprised of two Hummers crossed the UN-designated Blue Line for 300 meters in the direction of the occupied part of al-Ghajar village,” said NNA. On the Lebanese side, UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and Lebanese army personnel intensified patrolling activities.
    
   The Blue Line, which is the line for Israeli withdrawal from south Lebanon in 2000, now serves as the borderline of the two countries and runs through the middle of the al-Ghajar village. Lebanon accuses Israel of intruding its airspace on a daily basis, saying it is a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701. The resolution put an end to the 2006 war between Israel and Lebanese Shiite armed group Hezbollah, and mandates peacekeepers to monitor the armistice along the border.
   
  Four Israeli jets seen over Lebanon
  BEIRUT, Jan 17 (KUNA) — Four Israeli fighter jets were seen flying over Lebanese airspace in violation of the Lebanese sovereignty and UN resolution 1701, a Lebanese statement said on Sunday.
  The fighters were seen over a town south of Lebanon located close to the border with Israel, according to a statement by the Lebanese armed forces.
   
  The planes made a circular movement over several towns before heading back over the sea. The statement added that Israeli fighters have been witnessed over Lebanese territory on a virtually daily basis for a few weeks lately, and this is considered a breach of the UN Security Council resolution 1701.
   
  The UN Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL) have voiced concern over the matter on a number of occasions, criticizing the Israeli breaches on Lebanese sovereignty, and sending letters of complaint to the UN and Israeli army command.

  FRENCH INTELLIGENCE LETS THE CAT OUT OF THE BAG
  Not coincidentally, Agence France-Press, which of course is closely affiliated with French intelligence, filed a report on 14th January which contained the following concluding sentence:
   
  ‘On Wednesday, Obama ordered a “swift, coordinated and aggressive effort to save lives’ in Haiti following the murderous quake, as a massive US aid mission swung into action, using troops, naval forces, aircraft and rescue teams’.
   
  • FACT: An ‘act of God’, or natural calamity, is NOT a ‘murderous quake’. The use of the word MURDEROUS here implies that someone is doing the MURDERING. Quite clearly, therefore, Agence-France Press and hence French intelligence, understood at once that this latest abomination was far from a natural calamity.

  In other words, what was attempted was a colossal 9/11 terrorism abomination, as some voices had correctly predicted – but perpetrated in Haiti, where these Nazi operatives couldn’t have cared less if millions of Blacks had died.

  The Militarization of Emergency Aid to Haiti: Is it a Humanitarian Operation or an Invasion?
  Haiti has a longstanding history of US military intervention and occupation going back to the beginning of the 20th Century. US interventionism has contributed to the destruction of Haiti’s national economy and the impoverishment of its population. The devastating earthquake is presented to World public opinion as the sole cause of the country’s predicament. A country has been destroyed, its infrastructure demolished. Its people precipitated into abysmal poverty and despair. Haiti’s history, its colonial past have been erased. The US military has come to the rescue of an impoverished Nation. What is its Mandate? Is it a Humanitarian Operation or an Invasion?
   
  The main actors in America’s “humanitarian operation” are the Department of Defense, the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). (See USAID Speeches: On-The-Record Briefing on the Situation in Haiti, 01/13/10). USAID has also been entrusted in channelling food aid to Haiti, which is distributed by the World Food Program.   The military component of the US mission, however, tends to overshadow the civilian functions of rescuing a desperate and impoverished population. The overall humanitarian operation is not being led by civilian governmental agencies such as FEMA or USAID, but by the Pentagon. The dominant decision making role has been entrusted to US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM).
   
  A massive deployment of military hardware and personnel is contemplated. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen has confirmed that the US will be sending nine to ten thousand troops to Haiti, including 2000 marines. (American Forces Press Service, January 14, 2010)
   
  Aircraft carrier, USS Carl Vinson and its complement of supporting ships has already arrived in Port au Prince. (January 15, 2010).  The  2,000-member Marine Amphibious Unit as well as and soldiers from the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne division “are trained in a wide variety of missions including security and riot-control in addition to humanitarian tasks.” In contrast to rescue and relief teams dispatched by various civilian teams and organizations, the humanitarian mandate of the US military is not clearly defined: 
   
  “Marines are definitely warriors first, and that is what the world knows the Marines for,… [but] we’re equally as compassionate when we need to be, and this is a role that we’d like to show — that compassionate warrior, reaching out with a helping hand for those who need it. We are very excited about this.” (Marines’ Spokesman, Marines Embark on Haiti Response Mission, Army Forces Press Services, January 14, 2010)
   
  While presidents Obama and Préval spoke on the phone, there were no reports of negotiations between the two governments regarding the entry and deployment of US troops on Haitian soil. The decision was taken and imposed unilaterally by Washington. The total lack of a functioning government in Haiti was used to legitimize, on humanitarian grounds, the sending in of a powerful military force, which has de facto taken over several governmental functions.

  Concluding Remarks
  Haiti is a country under military occupation since the US instigated Coup d’Etat of February 2004. The entry of ten thousand heavily armed US troops, coupled with the activities of local militia could potentially precipitate the country into social chaos. These foreign forces have entered the country to reinforce MINUSTAH ”peacekeepers” and Haitian police forces (integrated by former Tonton Macoute), which since 2004, have been responsible for war crimes directed against the Haitian people, including the indiscriminate killing of civilians. These troups reinforce the existing occupation forces under UN mandate.
   
  Twenty thousand foreign troops under SOUTHCOM and MINUSTAH commands will be present in the country. In all likelihood, there will be an integration or coordination of the command structures of SOUTHCOM and MINUSTAH. The Haitian people have exhibited a high degree of solidarity, courage and social commitment. Helping one another and acting with consciousness: under very difficult conditions, in the immediate wake of the disaster, citizens rescue teams were set up spontaneously.
   
  The militarization of relief operations will weaken the organizational capabilities of Haitians to rebuild and reinstate the institutions of civilian government which have been destroyed. It will also encroach upon the efforts of the international medical teams and civilian relief organisations.
   
  It is absolutely essential that the Haitian people continue to forcefully oppose the presence of foreign troops in their country, particularly in public security operations. It is essential that Americans across the land forcefully oppose the decision of the Obama adminstration to send US combat troops to Haiti. There can be no real reconstruction or development under foreign military occupation.

Is The Euro Headed For A Breakup? ECB Prepares Legal Ground For Euro Rupture As Greek Crisis Escalates!

• Is this the beginning of the global monetary crisis? Although the coming default of sovereign debt by Greece is a problem, it is no where near, in magnitude to the bankruptcy of California. California’s economy is about 13-15% of America’s. Greece’s GDP is about US$340B compared to California’s US$1.8T. The ECB is correct in saying: ECB Says Greece Debt Crisis is Tiny Compared to California for the U.S. . What I am trying to highlight is that all major industrialized nations’ currencies are in trouble. People who turn from the Euro to the USD for safety is deceiving themselves. The current ‘strength’ in the USD is mis-placed trust.
   
• Will the Euro rupture? Will it break apart into 2 currencies? A core Euro based upon Germany, France … and a weaker Latin Euro for the southern European nations? The Wall Street Journal reports:
    
  Attention is now shifting towards the sustainability of public finances. The latest European Commission forecasts show the public debt-to-GDP ratio for euro-zone countries rising to 88% in 2011 from 69% as recently as 2008. Government borrowing is increasing sharply, fed by dwindling revenues and the cost of supporting the financial and other sectors.
   
  Markets are taking a dim view of sovereign indebtedness and have begun to focus on what they think are the most vulnerable candidates. After years with no noticeable market differentiation between euro-zone countries, bond and credit default spreads widened in early 2009 to their highest levels since the euro was introduced. … spreads have now widened again, especially for Greece, where the new government has overseen a substantial and adverse post-electoral revision of budgetary performance.

  Exiting the euro would be significantly more challenging a proposition than joining. In such an event we would expect that households’ and companies’ efforts to circumvent conversion of their assets (and wages) would likely to lead to a severe financial crisis similar to the Argentine experience, when that country’s banks’ assets were converted at a less favorable exchange rate than its deposits. The cost of enforcing contracts still denominated in Euros would also likely increase, raising the cost of doing business and adversely affecting the business environment for many years to come. In sum, sovereign creditworthiness would likely suffer for any country exiting the euro zone.
   
  An even worse scenario could be one in which exiting governments redenominated their euro-debt and paid investors in a new form of currency. In such a case, access to future funding would likely be difficult and costly for a reneging government. Euro-zone governments are aware of the risks associated with exiting the euro zone and the potential costs of such an action for their economies. They understand what is at stake and that the price to pay would be too high.
   
• The Telegraph UK reports:
   
  Fears of a euro break-up have reached the point where the European Central Bank feels compelled to issue a legal analysis of what would happen if a country tried to leave monetary union.
    
  “Recent developments have, perhaps, increased the risk of secession (however modestly), as well as the urgency of addressing it as a possible scenario,” said the document, entitled Withdrawal and expulsion from the EU and EMU: some reflections.

  Crucially, he argues that eurozone exit entails expulsion from the European Union as well. All EU members must take part in EMU (except Britain and Denmark, with opt-outs). This is a warning shot for Greece, Portugal, Ireland and Spain. If they fail to marshal public support for draconian austerity, they risk being cast into Icelandic oblivion. Or for Greece, back into the clammy embrace of Asia Minor.
   
  ECB chief Jean-Claude Trichet upped the ante, warning that the bank would not bend its collateral rules to support Greek debt. “No state can expect any special treatment,” he said. He might as well daub a death’s cross on the door of Greece’s debt management office. This euro-brinkmanship must be unnerving for the Hellenic Socialists (PASOK). Last week’s €1.6bn (£1.4bn) auction of Greek debt did not go well. The interest rate on six-month notes rose to 1.38pc, compared to 0.59pc a month ago. The yield on 10-year bonds has touched 6pc, the spreads ballooning to 270 basis points above German Bunds.
   
  Greece cannot afford such a premium for long. The country must raise €54bn this year – front-loaded in the first half. Unless the spreads fall sharply, the deficit cannot be cut from 12.7pc of GDP to 3pc of GDP within three years. As Moody’s put it, Greece (and Portugal) faces the risk of “slow death” from rising interest costs.
   
  Stephen Jen from BlueGold Capital said the design flaws of monetary union are becoming clearer. “I don’t believe Euroland will break up: too much political capital has been spent in the past half century for Euroland to allow an outright breakage. However, severe ‘stress-fractures’ are quite likely in the years ahead.” As Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece, and Spain (PIIGS) slide into deflation, their “real” interest rates will rise even higher. “It is tantamount to hiking rates in the already weak PIIGS,” he said. This is the crux. ECB policy will become “pro-cyclical”, too tight for the South, too loose for the North.
   
  The City view is that the North-South split may cause trouble, but that there will always be a bail-out to prevent a domino effect. “If a rescue turns out to be necessary, a rescue will be mounted,” said Marco Annunziata from Unicredit

  Even if Greece can cut wages without setting off mass protest, it lacks the open economy and export sector that may yet save Ireland in similar circumstances. Greece is caught in a textbook deflation trap.
   
  Labour minister Andreas Loverdos says unemployment would reach a million this year – or 22pc, equal to 30m in the US. He broadcast the fact with a hint of menace, as if he wanted Europe to squirm. Two can play brinkmanship.
